Title: Hand Guard / Deflectors
Post by: Larry295 on June 26, 2012, 04:13:12 AM
Has anybody tried, or know if it's possible to mount hand guards or deflectors on the handle bar of a Zero S?
I am mostly thinking about winter weather, commuting on the bike...

Cycle Gear sells a cheap and funky plastic wind deflector that appears to be a fits-all.  However, I don't think they would be very effective at blocking a cold and wet wind.

I just purchased a set of universal bar and control enclosures from Wunderlich America (www.wunderlichamerica.com (http://www.wunderlichamerica.com)) that are patterned after the "Hippo Hands" sold during the 1960's. They are made of a nylon-like wind and waterproof material, with a clear plastic section so that you can see your bar switches.  I think the cost was around $85.  They fold up small enough to put in a large coat pocket and would seem to be an excellent solution to keeping your gloved hands completely protected from rain, wind and cold. I plan on riding up the west coast to Washington during mid-July to attend a BMW rally and I am definitely going to pack these things in my luggage - I bet I will need them.

Success!  It took some looking around their web site but here they are:

While the hand protectors are labeled for the BMW F800GS, there doesn't appear to be any reason why they can't be used on any motorcycle with exposed tubular bars.  I just fitted them to my Zero S and they seem to fit just fine. You slide them over the grips, levers and (in the case of the right bar) the brake master cylinder and they are secured with buckled nylon straps that secure their ends to the handlebars.

it probably is effective, but certainly not stylish... ;)

Thanks for the photo. But yeah, clearly a little too much for me.
I am in CA, so cold is 45-50 max. I think just a deflector would be enough.

so how about some "barkbusters" as I had on the 2010DS demo that convinced me to buy a Zero straight away.

Hi larry

This time one up for Australia. The brand is from here.
http://www.barkbusters.net/ (http://www.barkbusters.net/)
You will find such products in the dirt/adv bike shops and websites.

I just love the name "barkbusters" on a quiet Zero.  :)

nice! Thanks for the link.
Do they mount easy on the 2012 Zero S ?
Which model works for the Zero actually?
Do they actually have distributors in the USA ?

have a look at these ones:

http://www.barkbusters.net/products/46.html (http://www.barkbusters.net/products/46.html)

they have just one bracket unlike the other more sturdier models that have a bar end mounting. Depends on your preferences heavier weight with aluminium bracket or light weight as in the link above.

send them an email under contacts section and see if they ship overseas. shipping cost might be an issue though (as it is for us from o/seas in most cases...). +
adding photo close up

here is the photo with the standard ADV bike barkbusters. a bit on the large side.
for mounting a simple handlebar bracket and you need to cut the ends of the handgrips to insert the bar end plug/mount.

and here is the page with "WHERE TO BUY" they sell worldwide ! so looking forward to seeing your bike with them mounted.
