Buy Sell Trade / Re: J1772 Charging Adapter For Zero Motorcycles
« on: January 05, 2018, 01:37:31 AM »
That's a really good deal.

I used it twice at my work garage before I had the Charge Tank installed.  Easier to used since those J1772 cords are usually long enough to reach the bike, and the standard cord comes up short most of the time when trying to used a public charger with it.

Buy Sell Trade / J1772 Charging Adapter For Zero Motorcycles - SOLD
« on: December 25, 2017, 12:36:27 AM »
Zero sells this OEM adapter for $300.  Used it twice before I added a Charge Tank to my SR.  This works any place you can find a normal car charger or at home if you have one installed.  Help when trying to charge while away by plugging in at a normal car charging station.

From Zero Site:

The SAE J1772 Charging Adapter allows you to charge your Zero using applicable public electric vehicle charging stations. The charging adapter plugs directly into the standard charging port of applicable models and does not require any installation or modification of your motorcycle.

Please note, the SAE J1772 Charging Adapter will not speed up your motorcycle charge time, which is limited by the motorcycle’s integrated charger. Also, some public J1772 charging stations require the vehicle to authenticate itself. The SAE J1772 Charging Adapter does not support charging stations that require such authentication.

DC Fast Charging and more battery capacity are at the top of list to get me to upgrade.  Really would like to take Zero on a weekend trip without the worry of not being able to charge quickly or have the 200 mile range most ICE bikes have at highway speeds.

I ordered a replacement right lower plastic cover (scrapped up in a get off), and new Touring windscreen from them yesterday.  We'll see how long it takes to deliver to my dealer on the East Coast.

I take back what I said about using my Chevrolet Volt portable 120V charger on the Zero Charge Tank.  Since I had my software updated I can now charge using the Volt charger.  Just tried it tonight as a test and it worked just fine; took it from 74% to 100% in less than 2 hours.  Now I only need to have one charger connector setup in the garage for both car and motorcycle.

OP

Are you using the 120V Wall Charger provided with your Chevrolet Volt?  I tried using that on my '17 SR with charge tank and it wouldn't accept charging from it.

I normally charge at work using a standard EV ChargePoint station that can support up to 30 amps output, but as you know it is reduced to the max. charge rate our Zero's support.  My charging light flashes normally during the charging cycle and when I go to unplug it after hitting 100% it is a steady green.  A couple occassion when I was late to unplug the light was completely out.

In December last year I too had to decide between the DSR and SR; the dealer has both to demo.  I did like the higher seat position of the DSR, but the power delivery on the SR was much better for me commuting on.  I drive 85% HOV (freeway) to work and back and love the higher output motor of the SR.  I drive 37 miles round-trip and have anywhere from 52-58% showing (outside temperature dependant) when I get home (averaging over 70 mph, averaging :-)).  I can charge at work so when I pull in the next day to the garage I have around 42% or lower showing and do a level 2 charge in 1 1/2 hours to 100%.

My 2017 SR refused to engage the motor.  After being towed to the dealership they sent the logs to Zero and had the dealership do a new software update with 1080 miles on the odometer.  Getting regular maintenance checks might have avoided my problem if I brought it in at 600 miles.
I don't understand.  Sorry.  Why would the bike require a software update in order to "work"?  If it worked the day before then why did it quit working?  Did the dealer say why?

I have the charge tank installed.  After topping off at work late last month the bike won't engage the motor.  The BMS 2-4 error flashing.  After sitting at the dealership for a day or so the motor finally engage with no changes made to the bike.  To be safe, they sent the logs to Zero and waited for a recommended diagnostic before releasing the bike back to me.  Zero sent them the latest firmware update and asked the dealership to tell their customers on the new bikes not to leave them plugged in all the time.  Not saying that caused my issue, but had I brought the bike in at 600 miles I probably would have received the firmware update sooner and not experienced the problem.  Will see what happens on the next 1000 plus miles.

I love the 116 ft. pounds of torque on my '17 SR!  Bought a '17 BMW R1200R earlier this month for my all day weekend rider.  Spent a solid week on the BMW to get it broken in then went back to SR for commuting to work this week; could barely control myself as I was blowing pass everything in front of me on the freeway.  No chance of that while riding the BMW, but that is not why I bought it.  The SR just makes full throttle twists so exciting while running "Custom" map at 100% power/torque.

Notice after getting the bike back from the dealer they left one of the seat bolts out and the front the seat was not installed correctly; you could see the orange power cables from the side under the seat.  When I pointed it out to them the service clerk question whether it actually came in with both bolts installed.  Thank goodness the owners stepped in and got him squared away on speaking with customers (purchased $60K worth of bikes from this one dealership over the last 16 months).  New seat bolts were delivered 5 days later with only a simple apology it took so long.  Evaluating my continuing  relationship with the dealership if they don't step up and offer me some type of service discount on my next visit after having my Zero down for 3 weeks to address a software update and service not putting the bike back together correctly.

One nice changed I notice after the software update is the adjustable top speed can now be changed to 110 mph, compared to the previous 106 mph ( as tested before).  Might need to find a nice place to see if the new top speed is actually obtainable or not.

Just picked up my '17 Zero SR from my dealer after being in the shop for 2 weeks.  It got the 2-4 BMS error code and had to be towed to the shop for diagnostics (motor wouldn't run after a full charge).  Took Zero many days to send a update to the dealer with the new code update to fix the issue after they were given the bike downloaded logs.  The dealer passed along that Zero will be releasing an update to all (2017 owners I guess) not to leave the bike plugged in once they 100% charged.  Said it could lead to battery overheating condition and cause a charging error later on such as mine did when it refused to run.

Keep a lookout for the update from Zero about this change to their current policy of leaving them plugged in all the time.

Dealer took the bike in today.  They were downloading the logs when I left.  Nice thing about buyer for a big dealership, they gave me a loaner bike until my problem is resolved.

After being at the dealership for 2 weeks I picked up my Zero SR today.  The service manager said they had to do a BMS update and that I could have done it from my Zero app myself.  So instead of me having to tow my bike to the dealer and waiting two weeks, Zero could be notifying owners about updates automatically via e-mail (since we downloaded the app) that one is available.  For a California company they are not working like a Silicon Valley operation.
