Supplemental Battery pack 20AH Zero XU
« on: July 03, 2013, 02:58:15 AM »

I want to add a supplemental Battery pack to my Zero XU here a pack I'm interested in. this would increase the battery from 2kw/h to amost 3 kw/h
Battery Pack
Nominal Voltage (V)   48 V
Nominal Capacity (Ah)   20 AH
Maximum Charge Voltage   60 V
Cut-off Discharge Voltage   32 V
Maximum Discharge Current
30 AH (BMS Set 1.5C 1000W ) Peak:60A (2000W)

Weight (NW)   9 KG
Life Cycles   1800 ~ 2000 times
Size (mm)   200×170×140 mm

BMS System Parameters :
Overcharge protection (V): 3.65 ± 0.025
Overcharge Recovery (V): 3.6 ± 0.05
Over-discharge voltage (V): 2.2 ± 0.05
Charge balanced current (mA) : 60
Resistance (m/ohm) : < 20
Over-discharge recovery: Disconnect the load or charge

Charger :
Input Voltage(AC/V)   110V or 220V (DUAL Voltage)
Output Current(A)   6 A
Output Voltage(DC/V)   DC 58.4V

I would install the battery in this tank bag like this one.

Looks like a fun project.  I'll be doing this soon with my 2010 Zero X.

Are you planning on running a diode between the add-on pack & the main pack?

Battery Isolated with Diode, I think so. I haven't sourced them out yet. Maybe a 30 amp current limiter too.  What do you think about the tank bag idea?

I like the idea of optional adding little more range when needed.

I did that battery add on with a Pingbattery of 48V (16s LiFePO4 and 15Ah).

It worked well but i had to watch  for the BMS to not be overcurrent when accelerating fast. The BMS of that Pingbattery was rated 40A continuous and i had installed a Wattsup meter to ensure that i never exceed the current the BMS can take.

What you need to understand is that the stock Zero Battery  and LiFePO4 battery discharge curve are not the same. The LiFePO4 ( like the Ping) is flat while the LiMn battery of the zero is more like a slope. If you superpose both discharge curve you will see that the LiMn stock zero battery will be higher voltage for the first half of the total discharge time so the stock zero battery will have more current drained than the added LiFePO4 battery. once the 50% SOC is reached, the LiFePO4 battery will begin to have more current draw from it than the Stock LiMn battery.

It also depend alot of the Internal resistance of the battery so in my case i added a 12AWG wire of about 8 foot long to increase the interna resistance of the Ping battery to never have it draw more than 40A. The resistance of the added 8 feets make the added battery to have less current drained compare to the stock zero battery.

The 2010 and 2011 zero battery cut at about 42V minimum and are full at 58.4V

 ;) thanks Doc

good Idea! on the 8 foot 12 AWG wire.

Not yet Buddy! still sourcing out the best battery, I want good guy to deal with out of China, seems like some of the battery guys on ebay have some low ratings. I like to see high 90's in their rating before pull the trigger.
