Title: Insurance Costs?
Post by: laramie LC4 on September 03, 2016, 05:49:55 AM
reading another thread and it got me thinking. i have seen several people reporting widely varying prices on their insurance. i thought it might be helpful to the masses to get a sense of what others are paying, and the companies they are using. maybe save us a couple bucks in the process.

i'll start;

GEICO Military Division, -  No tickets, no accidents, no claims, perfect driving history

2016 Zero FXS

Bodily Injury Liability                                                        $15,000/$30,000 = $17
Property Damage                                                              $10,000             = $15
Uninsured/Underinsured - waived (i got good insurance ;D)
Comprehensive                                                                 $500 Deductible  = $38
Collision                                                                           $500 Deductible  = $329
Towing & Labor Costs                                                                                 = $12

Total 12 Month Premium                                                                             = $411

Progressive, $87 a year, which includes multiple-bike, old folks, and long-time customer discounts. For this amount I get the following:

Bodily Injury Liability                                                        $250,000/$500,000
Property Damage                                                               $100,000

In 2009, I only paid $5 a year from Progressive for the same coverage on my 2009 Electric Motorsport GPR-S.   :o

I bought a '16 S as my first motorcycle and paid $1000 for the year for Progressive (other companies were right around this figure as well).

Seeing the low costs posted in this thread give me heartburn...Can I expect to pay significantly less next year? Do you all have many years of unblemished experience?

I pay somewhere in the middle of this range ($500/yr) for two Zero's and a V-Strom and no cars with Progressive.

I'm in my late 30s with a few accidents over ~10 years.

I had progressive, but my rates went through the roof after a single car accident last year (I accepted fault, but it was simply a car door that opened in front of the trailer--I was pulling out of a parking space very slowly). For whatever reason, Geico came in much lower. My Geico liability with 3 bikes with 100k/300k + 50k property damage is $283/year. The Zero comprehensive/collision with $500 deductible is an additional $121/year = $404/year total

Just dropped my bike and discovered I somehow didn't have collision insurance :(

But on Geico my comprehensive with a 1k deductible is $300. That doesn't seem right, and 1k of added collision is another $860/yr. Wtf!

2015 SR, Maryland, no points, no accidents...

Bodily Injury Liability                              $53.00
$50,000/100,000

Property Damage Liability                       $11.00
$100,000

Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury              $27
$50,000/100,000

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage       $8

Total = $99

With collision and comprehensive (both with $500 deductible) the cost goes up to $500 a year, most of it due to the cost of collision...

This is the same cost as for my Vectrix for the basic coverage. Comprehensive and collision were a little bit cheaper on the Vectrix.

looks like progressive may be the winner.

did their online quote and came up with MUCH better coverage and $471 cheaper per/year for my 2 bikes.

kinda pissed at GIECO and their special "military" branch. i will give them 1 more call and give them a chance to make it right, if not i think i will be shopping all my current insurance needs now...

keep it coming guys,

laramie  ;)

It would help to mention the state where you insure. That's a *great* price below. Mine is higher, but not because of the "R", it just is - my '07 and '09 Vectrix had the same costs to insure, more or less as the '15 SR.

Zero SR $99 a year for basic coverage as listed above (which provides more than the basic coverage someone else listed). Adding collision and comprehensive adds about $400 on top. GEICO, in Maryland. Have not found a cheaper option (similarly, they are the lowest for my cars).

Hi All,

I added a tracker to my 2017 DSR and it brought the cost down dramatically. (1700 pounds! to about 400)

Other things that made a big difference are accessories (luggage, screen, heated grips etc) and amount of annual mileage.

Hope this helps.

You are absolutely correct and my info is rather useless without the state. I'm in Colorado. It was $357 with State Farm, $500 deductible. I also insure my car and home with State Farm so you'd think there'd be some kind of discount for that.

I've had insurance from State Farm for years: cars, bikes,
homeowners, etc. I've had a few claims (car parked in the road outside
my house rear-ended and demolished at midnight; bicycles stolen
from my garage; a couple of others during the past 30 years).
*This isn't a plug for State Farm, just want to note that
I've always been happy with their service, and have never noticed
increased premiums from any claims*.

That said, here're costs for my Zero SR. Notes:
  - I live in the Bay Area in CA, where cost of everything is above average
  - cost is only for the Zero; costs are additional for my other bikes (2005 ninja EX250; 2004 Aprilia Scarabeo)
  - I think I have top-of-the-line coverage, possibly more than I need ...

Following costs are for six months; yearly cost is ~577

Liability - Bodily Injury / Property Damage
$100,000 each person / $300,000 each accident / $50,000 each accident
Premium $26.21

Comprehensive Deductible $250
Premium $84.40

Collision Deductible $250
Premium $123.00

Uninsured Motor Vehicle - Bodily Injury $100,000 each person / $300,000 each accident
Premium $52.39

Uninsured Motor Vehicle - Property Damage $250
Premium $2.33
