The day I bought my SR/S, I picked up a number of OEM accessories, without shopping or searching out user reviews.  My past experience with OEM parts has been all good, albeit at a premium price.  But I am willing to pay for great fit, great instructions, and good quality.  None of those apply to Zero's accessories except for two.

I'll start with the only good ones.  The upgraded front brake lever is fantastic.  I'm shocked at how much it improved brake power and feel.  From just a lever.  And the comfort is way better than the horribly-shaped stock lever.  Looks great too.  The price is absolutely insane however, but I'd still spend the money again.  The smoked lens LED signals are beautiful also, just stupidly overpriced at $160.  I believe that generic aftermarket ones would fit.  Either way you have to program the bike for them.

Luggage rack:  Insanely overpriced garbage and the Givi adapter won't fit correctly without extra parts.  Idiots.  Then once you do get the right bolts and move it back where it needs to be, the plastic flops around a LOT and the box is always bouncing.  So I had to build a reinforcement from an aluminum sheet.  I should have bought the T-Rex, which also has bungee loops.  I had to buy and add those myself.

Speaking of Givi...the Zero branded option is an absolutely insanely priced low end box, with the only benefit being a brand sticker on it.  Buy something else.  For the same price you can buy from the Givi high end line.  Without the Zero logo.  I hated the look of the other branded box, something from Shad that is horrifyingly ugly.

Swingarm spools.  I'm a moron.  Again, didn't shop, didn't ask prices, the dealer was offering 15% off all parts when you buy a bike.  They are $40 MSRP and worth maybe $5.  You can get better spools from Aliexpress for $10.  I know, I did that for my KTM.  The Zero spools are crappy and tiny.

12v accessory cable/adapter.  I sent this back.  It was offensively overpriced and HUGE.  I have no idea where I'd stuff the stupid thing.  I ended up just cutting off the stupid proprietary connector and put in a standard SAE connector like they have in the back of the back.  $8 from Amazon.

Touring screen.  Not crazy priced at least, but for me, it results in a lot of noise and buffeting on the highway.  Sure, it reduces the total wind, and increases range.  At the cost of pushing my helmet around and making things worse.  Junk.  I'm going to try cutting it and see if I can find a middle ground.  As far as I can find, there are --ahem-- zero options from the aftermarket for this bike.  And yes, I tried a winglet with no improvement.

The wheel chock looks like a direct clone of the Baxley, which is what I bought, but is half the price.  Shocking.  But because the other OEM parts were garbage, I paid extra for the Baxley, maybe without reason, don't know.  I do love it and it works SO well.  Absolutely recommended.  If they did just clone it, then the price is awesome.

I do like the TechSpec tank grips, but those aren't really OEM or branded.  They just happen to be sold at Zero dealers.  At a ludicrous price.  They are excellent though, and very helpful if you like to use a sport/racing body position in turns.

Buy Sell Trade / WTB: Rear seat for Zero SR/S
« on: November 13, 2023, 10:58:16 PM »
I figure the odds are small to find one, but maybe if someone went to a Corbin and never wants to go back.  I'd like a cheap deal on a rear seat, condition irrelevant as all I want is the base.  I would remove the vinyl and foam, to use it as a base for a storage module.

We have two committed, and a third likely, but nothing from other vendors.  See the invite below.

Good morning!

The Valley of the Sun EVA is requesting you to consider showing your vehicle at FuelFest on December 9th at Westworld in Scottsdale. This year, they are adding an electric vehicle only section called “ElectriFest”, where they will be featuring high performance, custom, converted, unique or new/highly desirable models to showcase in their display.

The cost to participate is $60/vehicle, and if we have 10 or more vehicles registered to our group, you would get an extra pass for admission for a second person to the event. We are a few registrations short of our 10 vehicle minimum, but with your help, we can get there!

You can find more details here. The event setup will be between 10am-12pm, and cars would be asked to remain parked in the display until the event closes at 8pm. Attendance is expected to exceed 10,000 people. ElectriFest will be hosted in a prominent location, and most attendees will need to pass through this section to get to the rest of the event, so exposure to our section will be excellent.

You can register your ride by clicking here, and after payment is submitted you can enter a club name or affiliation – please enter “Valley of the Sun EVA” when prompted.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Best Regards,

Parts, Mods And Hacks / Good cheap level 2 charging cord
« on: November 04, 2023, 11:24:58 PM »
My Zero came with a level 1 cord, so I did some shopping.  I put this on my eBay watch list, and the vendor sent me an offer for $100 shipped a couple days later.  Smokin' deal, works great, and has good info on the screen.  It can be adjusted in cases where an outlet can't support full power.

I have no affiliation with the seller or manufacturer.

I don't get it.  This happens on the bike I own (2023 SR/S) and on a bike I rented (2020 SR/S).  I wish they'd stay on all the time, and have no idea why it seems random.  Example:  I rode for a while to a destination, parked, turned it off.  Plugged in my helmet to charge.  It was charging, with the bike off.  I needed to move the bike, and did, about 100 feet away.  Turn off the bike...the damn USB ports turn off!  WTF!  Same happened when I rented one, the phone kept charging one time, so I thought, that's very cool and useful.  And then at another stop I look, and the phone is not charging.

Anyone know what's going on?

Also the 12v outlet at the front ALWAYS turns off immediately.  I have not tested the underseat outlet at all.

I can't believe how awful those bolts are, and it's impossible, even with a perfectly fitting Wera bit, to not make them uglier once you remove them one time.

They are, of course, ahem--electric blue.

There are other threads about doing this, and others about extra buttons.  I got some of my info and a wiring diagram from one of those threads.  I decided to do it, and get a video, which might help people who are afraid of electrical stuff.  I've been doing electrical projects all my life so it's simple to me.

We all know what a pain it is to hit that stupid button, and at the same time, the hazard button is the easiest to reach of all of them.  And the least useful.  It's right against my finger in a normal grip position.  So the choice was obvious.  The first couple times I went to use parking mode I hit the hazards, but my brain immediately switched over when riding, and I used the correct one every time.

Tech Help / Can you get a constant 12v source on a Zero?
« on: September 06, 2023, 12:15:01 AM »
Zero says you cannot connect anything to the 12v battery, but it's unclear why, or whether something with a very tiny draw would affect it.  I want to power a dashcam that wants 12v constant plus 12v switched.  Any ideas?

Parts, Mods And Hacks / What's in your frunk? Organizing it and the top case
« on: September 04, 2023, 10:30:32 PM »
The frunk is nice, but being a huge bucket is kind of a challenge for small items, or things you may need to reach easily.  Such as the parking brake and kickstand disc here.  The bag has stuff like a tire gauge, cleaning wipes, etc.

The SR/S and SR/F have a negative on/off wire to the brake light, with constant 13.8v on another leg.  So you can add lights if you can negatively switch them, but I wanted to add a combo light with a shared ground.  Meaning that the tail and turn share grounds, so you can't switch that lead.  Here's what I did, which was pretty cheap and easy.

I can't seem to figure this out.  I'd like the bike to charge only after 9pm, or before 2pm.  The info on this screen makes it seem like I've done it right, but the bike still charges during that time, as you can see below, but only sometimes.  Another time it asked me if I wanted to bypass the schedule.  So clearly I'm not understanding something, and it's probably that plug-in window.  I don't know what it means, and the on-screen info doesn't tell me.  Should I make my plug-in window match the active charging time?
