Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Tank,Fender and Tail For Sale
« on: December 29, 2019, 11:46:01 AM »
I have 2015 SR Tank, Front and Rear Tail for sale.  I warranty replaced mine because there was a known issue with a slight factory overfill of brake fluid that would drip and discolor the tank.

The color is the classic faded red.

Pictures later.

PM if interested.  In the San Jose, California area.

I went into my garage and I noticed that my 2015 SR was showing 00 SOC when plugged into the onboard charger.

I turned on the Error display on the dash and I get the following according to the Unofficial Manual:

6 BMS Throttle Enable Wire Error - throttle
40 BMS Throttle En Wire Disable - Throttle
48 SEVCON Startup Disable - Controller
49 Contactor Open Disable- Contactor
25 Contactor Open Warning - Contactor
30 BMS CAN Error - BMS
57 Module Did Not Connect - BMS

Yikes! Any ideas?

At Re-Fuel a while back, a Zero employee noticed that there was some binding in my 2015 SR wiring harness when turning the handle bars.  He said to stack the cables and zip tie them, so that they are relatively flat bending around the head tube.  This worked.

I had some work done (which I am really happy about) and I was told that my wiring harness was not in the stock configuration, so they "fixed it". AND they fixed it back to binding.  So I did the same thing again to fix it back a second time.

I mentioned the binding and I was told that rarely do you go all the way to the steering limit.  HAH - I go all the way to the steering limit every time I push my bike of my garage and turn it around.

I was told that the 2015 has one more cable, so it may be more common to have binding issues.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Another Melted 120V Charge Cable
« on: June 25, 2018, 05:21:40 AM »
Yes, another partially melted 120V Charge Cable.

let's go through the normal checklist for this common problem:
--14 AWG, 5-6 ft - check
--Normally unplug at wall outlet - check
--The conductors on the cable and the Zero look clean- check
--The cables and heat shrink on the the Zero behind the C14 plug look good.  This part has been replaced/repaired before by Zero when a previous cable was melted.  - check
--The stock onboard charger was replaced by the dealer under warranty ~6 months ago.

I have not checked the what the wall outlet contacts or voltage.  The charge cable was worryingly warm at both ends the last time I unplugged it at the wall before charging tapered.  A little white plastic internal to the plug had melted and the plug conductors are bent a little from the weight of the cable hanging from the wall.  The cable is probably a extra one that I bought from Amazon, but 14 AWG is embossed on it.

I hope its is not the new onboard charger, but that is what I suspect because it seemed that the last onboard burnt the last cable I had when it failed.

Is it more dangerous to use NEMA adapters like the RV Plug, the Dryer Plug with 6+kW chargers?  Let me explain below.

Now that I have a DigiNow Fast Charger, I can go ride to the REFUEL event June 25th at Laguna Seca and race the track.

They say they will have RV NEMA 14-50 sockets for charging, so I need a adapter.

DigiNow has this modular gun where you can plug in an NEMA 14-50, NEMA TT-30, Tesla, ect.  When you use a EV charging station, the charging station stops the current when it detects that the shorter 'proximity' pin connect first so there there is no arcing.

When you use a NEMA adapter, there is not proximity pin and no switch, so if you want to stop the charge and pull the plug, won't the arcing be a problem?  Of course, that is how we unplug the on board charger, but that is only ~1.3 kW, not 6+ kW.

Thanks

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / EV Plug / J1772 Adaptors
« on: December 23, 2016, 01:02:33 PM »
I think that the Zero is nice that it comes with a 110 V cable, but what about the EV Plug/ J1772 adapters?  The J1772 should come standard.

Here are the prices that I see on adapters and I think they are too much even though they are professionally assembled:

1. Zero -$300
2. Hollywood Electric- $400
3. Tucson EV - $165 - needs to be terminated, but comes with "pilot signal box"

Now these parts are basically copper, plastic and labor.  They should be able to be done for less that $90 with some volume.  I know some of these people are 'friends', but for the good of Zero and electric motorcycles, these adapters should be standard or driven to low cost.

Can some one tell me about the J1772 'pilot signal'.  Don't we need a pilot signal on most chargers?  It would be tough to buy a $400 adapter and not have it work because it has no 'pilot signal'.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Charge Cord Fried
« on: November 22, 2016, 04:02:59 AM »
I had to replace regular charge cord because the plastic on the plug around the terminals started to deform and crack from too much arcing.

At work I share a charge cord with 2 other Zeros and it gets used every work day.  It about a year old and I know its rated for our Zeros on-board.  It is run on a long extension cord that is also rated for our power, FYI.

I use to think the problem was moisture in the terminals, but now we have a new cord and I am seeing and hearing evidence of arcing on the new plug when it is dry.  I notice it when plunging in, not pulling out.

The GFCI holds up fine.

Is it a issue with the charger?  Or is that just the way it is for our on-board charger?

My coworker has the FX and he said he is not experiencing the problem.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / J1772 "Handshake" Issues
« on: September 16, 2016, 02:21:59 AM »
Do any of the public chargers have issues with the Zero Charge Tank?

Specifically, the J1772 "handshake" / pilot signal.

I wish they did a street version that my small frame can use.

The specs don't seem amazing, but apparently they are very competitive.  A employee there says that they are 'better than Tesla' on there battery in this thread: http://bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=498446

With permission.

I was looking for Zero photos and I find MY photo of my SR on Mt Hamilton outside of San Jose.

Here it is in a short article:

I was proud of how well that iPhone photo turned out that when I was emailing Zero for some service, I greased the wheels with some good vibes that they could use.

Anyway I'm faltered.

Its possible it was yanked from the internet too, because I have posted it before.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Tire Life
« on: April 16, 2016, 11:39:25 AM »
A friend passed my 2015 SR and told me that my tires where worn out.  I thought he was kidding.

At 4000 miles, the rear (Pirelli Diablo Rosso II) looks good but the front is not far from the wear bar.  I know the depth on the front is not deep brand new, but dam.

The wear is mostly from cornering.

Is the bike front heavy?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / 74% Charge Efficiency
« on: February 21, 2016, 08:49:14 AM »
I wanted to know how efficient the charger was because PG&E rates are high-ish even if they are still a fraction of the cost of gas. I went over my "baseline usage" (where my rates go up) for the first time charging my Zero a couple of months ago.  I have NEVER done that before, so now I am trying to use wisely and have switch to "time of use" rates where off-peak I get a rate discount.  To charge off-peak, I use a simple plug timer, that is set to turn on during off-peak times.  I only need 25% of the battery to get to work.

I used a Kill-A-Watt meter to keep track of my kWhrs.

I commuted home from work and plugged in the next day at 69% state of charge indicated.  Since the website says that the practical capacity of my 2015 Zero SR is 11.0 kWhrs, that puts me at 7.59 kWhr in the battery.

I partial charged from 69% to 97% state of charge and according to my Kill-A-Watt, 3.67 kWhr was used at the 120VAC outlet, which should be, if I am calculating it right, 84% efficiency.

Then, I charged to 100% and the total energy used was 4.62 kWhr, so I calculate that at 74% efficien

In conclusion, the charge efficiency drops down to 74% when the charger is "topping" the pack and balancing.

So, if you want to be most efficient, don't charge to 100% all the time.  Once in a while it is good to do a balance charge to maintain the back, but I dont think you need to do that each charge.

I would like to do this again at a lower state of charge and take a couple of data points.

Does that make since?  Did I calculate it right using 11 kWhr for the "nominal capacity"?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / 2015 SR Front Suspension WAY Too Stiff
« on: December 14, 2015, 08:42:12 AM »
I'm trying to set the front suspension sag to the specified 45 mm and I have the pre-load all the way backed out and still too stiff.

I have had my 2015 SR for a couple weeks and I am finally getting around to checking the suspension settings.  I looked up in the manual and the spec for sag is 45 mm, which is about 28% of the travel spec (159 mm).    Funny thing is that they said it was 1/3rd.  I followed the procedure, turned the red nut on the top fork all the way counter clockwise and I bounced the bike and put my hands and feet on the controls.  I have done this before and I have had pros to this, so I think the springs are just too stiff.  The sag is probably less than 30 to 35 m.  I even put both rebound and compression all the way soft.

When I'm off the bike and its on its kick stand, it is almost topped out, I even pulled up on the front to verify it was all the way topped out.  There is about 4 mm of movement, but that it.   I have yet to fully suspend the front wheel

When balance the bike and bounce up and down, its mostly rear suspension movement and the fork does not do much.

I'm 160-165 and I put my gear on for the test.

The rear suspension pre-load/sag is good enough at the stock setting (second positions form full soft).

Any ideas?  Anyone adjust there suspension?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Name That Noise Thread
« on: November 29, 2015, 09:51:00 AM »
My 2015 Zero SR just arrived last night after a Alabama to California trip and I went on my first ride up HYW 9 and 35.  Awesome cold ride.

Nothing wrong here, but I noticed that stopped at a light with no throttle, the Zero will make a whirling noise before going completely silent.  Maybe 1 or 2 seconds.  To me it sounds like a flywheel spinning, but I thought that the Zero was a direct drive fixed gear.  It does not really sound like typical controller noise.

Sound familiar? Thanks.
