Belt Life, 2012 D and DS
« on: October 01, 2012, 06:33:24 PM »

I've got just over 4K miles on my DS and need a rear tire.  Avons are my choice for the super motard look.

I read in another post about a belt snap at 6K miles.  I normally go for as much as I can once I get the tools out so, my question is-

How many people have had belt failures and what was the milage?  Has anyone been proactive and changed it before it broke and, if you have, what was the milage?

Thanks

Belts usually don't wear out, they only get damaged from debris  getting caught between belt and pulley. eg rocks, sticks, bits of metal. Most bikes with belts have a lower chain guard to stop this happening,(BMW,Buell, Harley Davidson) and I surprised there is no guard on the S and  DS models. DS is designed to go off road where you expect to get a lot of debris.

just inspect your belt and if no cuts or signs of damage, don't worry, would be good to have a spare. But no need to replace unless damaged. Belts are made from Kevlar or better and have improved much in last few years. They used to have a recommended  replacement life, but this keeps increasing with better belt technology, also cost is dropping as they become more popular.

Buy A belt tensioner gauge from amazon and make sure tension is correct at 55 lbs or 25kg and pulley aligned and clean.

Gates (krikit)  91107 Belt Tension Tester. Measures tension from 30 to 160 lbs for USA (15 to 75 kg for rest of the world.)  ;)

Belt tension on the 2012 Zero S is 20 to 30 kg, using the Gates belt tension gauge as sold by Amazon.  After 2700 miles, my belt tension has not changed and I have not had to adjust my belt.  It has remained at 25 kg ever since I bought my bike.   :)

thanks Richard230, I remember other posting about belt tension in the past, to adjust you loosen bolts holding motor and move motor housing. Axle bolt is only used for removing rear wheel.

2013 models use axle bolt to adjust belt tension.

Belt fine. The one snapped in here reckons that some debris was caught and caused the belt to go. Check tyre alternatives to the standard DS.
On my S tyres are still as new. 5k kms.

that was mine that snapped and as was said if some branch or twig didn't get sucked up by the back sprocket I don't think it would hardly ever need replacing.  Should be maintenance free for a long time.
