Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Need help for some trouble shoot
« on: September 10, 2013, 05:33:53 AM »
I have a 2011 XU. It was working fine without problems. But today, after I rode it to work and charge it after, something strange happen.
In the BMS, I have the trickle charge indicator keep on flashing. Usually when I plug it in, the charge indicator, or the trickle charge stay on and also the current light. And then after around 2 hrs, I will have the green light show it charged up. But today I have charged it for 3 hrs and I got this flashing light. I have tried to unplug it, wait for while and plug it in again, and still the same thing.
Anyone know what the meaning of it? I tried to search the manual on-line and I could not find anything about it. And I am still at my work place, I just want to make sure I can make it home in one piece...

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / What the Zero bike is and not
« on: September 19, 2012, 04:03:03 AM »
I got the 2011 zero XU for over 3 months already, I have ride it to work, grocery shopping, errands, or a short leisure ride after dinner. I find once you realize what the zero bike is and you will be very happy with it.

To me a zero is:
a commuter bike. - it takes you from point A to point B, recharge in point B, and ride back to point A.
It is also a perfect bike for short errand trip, you won't feel pain to ride a 8km distance to a grocery, buy some yogurt, and then another 8km home. You won't feel you waste so much gas just because all you want is to buy 1 orange.
It is good for a short ride around the neighbourhood. There is no noise to irritated your neighbour, and most of them will find the Zero is a cool bike.

A Zero is not:
A Touring bike. I will not ride my Zero to tour around the town, even if I know where is the electric plug.
Definite not for cross country.
If you like to mechanically upgrade and tweak your bike in every imaginable way you can, a zero is definite not your cup of tea. I own scooter before and I actually transform it from air-cool to liquid-cooling, but when I got a zero, all I can do is just some minor body mod. May be I am just not that good at electrical and software engineering.

So I receive good and bad comments on my XU, some laughs at the range, but some just find it so cool to ride on it. But as long as you know your range, purpose, and where you can recharge your bike, a Zero is definitely a fun and cool bike to have.

I love my Zero!!!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / BMS working or Glitch?
« on: September 05, 2012, 01:03:55 AM »
I rode my 2011XU yesterday, I rode it for 24km already, and I have only one bar left. According to my past experience, the battery should be almost used up.

So I am only 200m from home, and all of a sudden, the bike seems losing its power, I cannot go past 45km/h, and the warning light flash once. No stalling though. So I baby the bike for the last 200m and got home, and when I turn off and turn on again, it seems there is not enough power to power up the bike. So I charge it and after the battery is full, I take it out for a spin again and it seems it is back to normal.

Since I am only a newbie regarding the Zero, just wondering is it normal? or am I experience the glitch which many of you are experiencing it? BTW, my 2011 XU has only 450km on the odometer.

on a side note, I rode it with a mix of city and highway, with a stretch of the road that I go for a little bit over 80km/h (50mph), its top speed. And I can definitely feels the winds drag. I am planing to get a puig city sport windshield. See if this will improve the rage and speed a bit...

The XU is really fun to ride, but I find a few more accessories make it even better. There are 3 things I think is almost must have for me to make the ride more enjoyable and more practical (for me personally)

1. First one is the license plate stash.storage box. I have the twist throttle one, and there is another one call grifter. I find this is a great place to put the insurance/reg paper and even a small tool/ flash light. Cost is about $20.

2. a Windshield. Sometimes when I ride, I just don't like the feeling the the wind constantly blow to my abs. I guess I am kinda get use to riding a scooter with a small windshield. So I get a windshield. I first want to get a puig scooter city sport windshield, which looks really nice on a small bike like the XU, it was for $120, but I comes up with a second hand slipstreamer spit fire one with only $40, and another $20 for a 1" handlebar clamps. So I get the slipstreamer one. But it was original too big so I take my time to trim it smaller. Not the perfect job in the world, but I kinda think it fit the XU better now than in its original size. I just put it on last night, no time to test the effect yet, in terms or speed and range.

3. Saddlebag. I got the nelson-rigg CL series, I first have the saddlebag, I find I need the smallest one or the bag may touch the wheel. I also order another tail/tank bag, which can either connect to the saddle bag or just the tail bag.  I may just use the tail bag only most of the time for a bit more storage space, and put on the saddle when I want/need more storage. I find the saddlebag take away the slim looks of the XU. It makes the bike much more bulky. The nelson-rigg cl series cost about $200. (both the tail bag and the saddlebag, with all the cables and ties)

That's it, got everything on, and now I am ready to roll!!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Still learning my XU
« on: July 07, 2012, 06:19:58 AM »
Well, I have finally complete 4 partial cycle charges, as I test ride it yesterday, I did not see and significant improvement in terms of range. I suspect I need to plug it in for a couple days to balance the cell, since I got it practically brand new.

I have tested both eco and sport mode, the top speed is the same, but eco mode accelerated much slower and literally no hill climbing at all. Range is not much big of different, I think I can squeeze in like 5km more on the eco mode, but when you flashing at around 20km range, 5km is quite a big jump.

For the past few days, I was driving at the speed between 60km/h-80km/h and I have 2bars left flashing at about 18-20km. I once tried to go like 3 more km while flashing at no bar.

I am now trying to make this XU a 30km range. May be a summer screen will do... Wondering will the 2012 battery works in the 2011 model?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / New 2011 XU owner!
« on: July 03, 2012, 05:20:26 AM »
hi all, I just got myself a 2011 XU. It was a "Demo" one but have only like 15km on the Odometer. So it is like brand new, and I got a good deal on it. That's why I get the 2011 instead of 2012, even though 2012 has better speed and range...

Anyway, I am still learning about my XU, since I don't have an owner's manual, I did read a lot of post to learn about the bike, charging...etc. I am still in the "run-in" period, only 3 partial cycle charges. As of currently, the range is really bad right now. I can only go around 22km and then I am flashing with only one bar left. I am hoping it will get better after 4 partial cycle charge. Anyway, I did try to email Zero to see if I can get a copy of owner manual. As there are some question that I like to get an answer of, like: how to read the charging light...where to get and what kind of brake pads, do I need to lube the chain from time to time...

So far, I like riding the XU a lot, but the one thing I really not get use to is the lack of storage space. I use to ride a 50cc scooter, with a trunk and top-case, so now I even have no idea where to put my insurance paper when I am riding it...

anyway, I am happy to get onboard, and looking forward to learn many things from all of you!
