Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Battery Loss History
« on: November 05, 2016, 09:40:51 PM »
So I'm coming up on 30K miles on my 2012 ZF6.  At 5 points in the last 4 years I've run the battery down to 0% charge and then measured to see how much it took to charge to 100%, thus approximating capacity.   The EiG spec was 1000 cycles to 80% (at 1C charge/discharge),  I was on track with that until around ~400 cycles, but since then I've been seeing a much quicker loss.

I've been relatively kind to the batteries, avoiding deep discharges.  Perhaps there's an aging effect.  Perhaps because it's only a 6kWh pack it has a significant higher C discharge than the ZF9 would (this is a snowballing effect as the pack looses capacity).   I don't think I have a bum cell, as I looked at all the individual voltages for each of the series blocks-of-4.

I suppose around 60% capacity I'll have to take action due to poor range.  I might try contacting Zero, but I can't imagine they'd have any options for me.  Considering rebuilding the pack, seems like more work than I want.  Maybe I'll find a reasonably priced wrecked 2012 that I can salvage the pack/box from, maybe I'll find a deal on a newer Zero.

Any thoughts?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Rear Brake Light Sensor
« on: February 08, 2016, 02:37:25 AM »
So after almost getting rear ended  :o   I noticed that my rear brake will only activate the brake light if I basically stand on it.  It doesn't appear to be adjustable.  I guess I should just get a new one, maybe call the dealer parts dept and see if the can find out a good replacement, unless someone here knows.

Anyone had any similar experience, even on non-Zero bikes?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / front pulley failure
« on: May 04, 2015, 12:42:12 AM »
OK, riding with 19400 on the odo;  and suddenly an intermittent grindy noise and minor vibration (could only feel it in the right foot peg).  Stopped, looked, didn't see anything.  Rode 2-ish miles, still occurring, stopped again, and this time I spotted it!  The inside rail of the front drive sprocket 'separated' / 'fell off' (why?) and is flopping around between the sprocket and the motor and the motor shaft.  :o  :o

Advice?  I rode it home (~20 miles) without problems.  Do I need to replace the sprocket before riding again?  The belt seems to be just fine without that inside rail.   Perhaps I can just remove the separated rail and ride it until I get it into the shop for new tires (~1000 miles from now)?   Not sure how to remove it easily however - poor access.  Any ideas?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Cold Effects
« on: February 28, 2014, 09:31:01 AM »
At about 7:30AM, ambient of 21F/-6C, with my bike cold-soaked in a unheated garage to ~35F/2C, I rode 21.8 miles (~35 minutes).  I plugged in at work, and the kill-o-watt registered 3.2 kWH to charge to 100%.   By 4:00PM, with the ambient up to 62F/16C and some sunshine on the bike, I rode the exact same route, and plugged in at home.  This time, only 2.4 kWH.   No wind today, no significant change in elevation, just different temperatures.
In the cold it took 33% more power to go the same distance!  I knew there was an effect, but I never really measured it, pretty dramatic.  Where does the extra power go?

"Cold temperature increases the internal resistance and diminishes the capacity. Batteries that would provide 100 percent capacity at 27°C (80°F) will typically deliver only 50 percent at –18°C (0°F)."
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/discharging_at_high_and_low_temperatures

So I guess this means that the extra 800 Wh that was used in the cold went into heat dissipation in the battery through the "increased internal resistance" mechanism?  I find this a little bit hard to imagine as that's a lot of heat - like a hair dryer running for 40 minutes.  I would think the battery pack would have been pretty toasty at the end of the ride, even with the ambient of 21F/-6C.

Does anyone have any insight into this?  I'm curious to learn more.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Belt Drive Clack
« on: August 19, 2013, 09:49:17 AM »
Maybe to you pro's this will seem trivial...

Here's the symptoms:  Riding up my driveway at 5mph, smooth and quiet as always.  Suddenly, a loud clack-clack-clack starts coming from the rear.  What the hell?  The loud clack was happening every 1/3 tire rotation.  Rolling forward made the noise, rolling backwards was silent. Didn't matter if the bike was on or off.  Wheel bearing?  Disc brake loose?  Everything seemed solid.

Into the garage, put the bike up so the rear tire is free.  Still clacking, close inspection reveals the belt is the culprit.  I can see the belt 'sticking' to the sprocket (only every 1/3 rotation) and then suddenly with a loud clack it will jump back out to normal.  OK, maybe it's a tension thing.  Adjusted the tension from loose to normal to tight, and it's still doing it.  Careful rotation and I can pin down the exact belt tooth that's causing it to stick.  Inspection under a bright light showed there is no damage to the belt tooth or the sprocket.

Then I run my finger carefully over the belt tooth, and it's crazy sticky.  The other belt teeth are not.   I get a qtip and water and carefully clean out the problem teeth (spaced 1/3 of a rear wheel rotation apart) and ta-da!  Silent again.

Apparently I picked up a sticky blob-o-something in the belt, and it spread via the sprocket to other belt teeth, but not all of them.  The belt teeth would stick to the sprocket as long as they could and then let go with a loud clack.   I suppose if I had just ridden it 10 miles it would have worn off the stickyness, but it took me completely by surprise and it sure sounded like something was really wrong.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Hope for Colorado '13 buyers
« on: March 02, 2013, 08:02:28 PM »
Colorado used to give very generous tax credits for emotos, but dropped them completely starting 2013.

I wrote both my state reps, and several adjacent state reps about a month ago.  7 in total.  Not a peep response.

Until yesterday,  Jonathan Singer (D) Longmont called me back, apologized for the delay, and told me there was hope for reinstatement of some level of credit and he would be willing to work on it.   He asked me for some more information to help him pursue it  (mostly getting him in touch with the local Zero dealer).

Drop him a note of encouragement - especially if you're here in Colorado.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Stupid Colorado. Bad news for Zero.
« on: February 06, 2013, 08:58:44 AM »
So Colorado used to give fantastic tax credits, typically $5000-$6000, for a Zero purchase.
This was under the "Innovative Motor Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Vehicle Credits" , which is active from 2011-2015.

However, apparently they modified it for 2013-2015, completely eliminating all electric motorcycle tax incentives.
Those of us who bought in 2011-2012 are grandfathered.

"Motorcycles and scooters, including electric motorcycles and scooters, do not meet the criteria ..... they cannot qualify for the credit."

I guess I should be happy I didn't wait for a 2013 model !!!  :-\
Unfortunately, this will clearly be a hit for Colorado sales.  I hope we don't lose our dealer.
I wish they had left in some tax incentive, rather than eliminating it altogether.
This has got to be a blow to all those patient Brammo buyers, too.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Zero Accessories I'd pay for
« on: October 18, 2012, 05:02:15 AM »
For my 2012 ZF6:
  1) A automatic timed blinker turn off
  2) A display that shows engineering data - like kWh/hr, remaining kWh, Battery Temp, Motor Temp, ...
  3) A shop manual
  4) An extended warranty
  5) Cabling & Software to connect to the various boards (BMS, MBB, etc)
  6) A battery upgrade package from ZF6 to ZF9

About 34F on the ride into work this morning.   Can anyone out there beat that?

The Zero performed well, (although it started from a 50F garage).   At work, the bike then sat out all day and chilled to maybe 39F or so.
Going home, when I turned the bike on, I got a blink code on the display  :o
5 short, 1 long.  ???  Clear as mud!  It went away when I put the kickstand up.  So I rode home, no problems.
Turns out the blink code is "kickstand sensor error".  Bet it's a connector that has a temp sensitivity and goes away when it warms up.

I am curious if I would have noticeable reduced range at cold temps - but my work ride is only 8 miles one way.  Couldn't tell a difference.

This is a picture of work when I got there this morning!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Tools Question
« on: August 25, 2012, 08:11:00 AM »
I noticed my drive belt is getting a little loose.  Last I checked, around 1000 miles, it was within the 20-30 kg spec limit.
Now it's down to 15 kg. (2170 miles)   So I'm thinking about tightening it.
Anyone out there done this yet?  I know offthegrid has popped his motor in and out so maybe he can answer!
The motor hex bolts need 18 & 22 ft-pounds.  All I have for Allen wrenches are little "L" shaped ones, maybe 1"x4".  Clearly those won't do.
Also, the access to some of the bolts seems, ummm, not real direct.

What size/style allen wrenches are good?
Any tips for getting at the 4 motor mount bolts?

Thanks in advance...

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / ICE v. Zero
« on: August 15, 2012, 09:10:53 PM »
On the road again....
So after riding my 630 pound K1200GT for a month, being on the Zero again was quite remarkable.  Some thoughts:

I don't like firing up the big ol' ICE bike to drive 6 miles round trip to the store.  It takes awhile to come up to operating temp.  Seems so wasteful.  The Zero I wouldn't think twice about firing it up just to ride around the parking lot.  On, Off, On again - no big deal.

Amazing 300 pounds versus 630 pounds.  It's a world of difference.  I really like the Zero's ride.  It's light, tight, very maneuverable.  And I think the brakes are very responsive (my opinion, I know).

Sure the Zero is 0-60 in 10s; my k1200 has 130 hp so of course it's way faster.   But surprisingly, I don't really feel like the Zero is a 'slug' -- it just feels "reasonable".

It's cool that the Zero is so quiet.  Previous owner of my k1200 put aftermarket pipes on.  Too loud.  (He saved the stock pipes, I'm going to put them back on this fall)

It's fantastic that the Zero is electric - the heat just pours off the K1200 - not much fun if it's hot out - especially for around-town riding.  And no gas stations!  And (knock wood) low low maintenance costs.

I'm very happy to have my Zero - thanks to all at Zero for making a go at creating a E-moto company - let's hope they succeed!

Did the subject grab your attention??  :D

I was just at a conference, where one of the sponsors is having a sweepstakes for an electric motorcycle.
They have a picture of a Brammo Enertia, but the fine print states "...one (1) winner of an electric motorcycle, model TBD."

Go to this site and click "enter without tweeting" to enter.  Drawing in Nov/2012.  Odd of winning probably about 1-in-250,000.
