Title: Am I too ambitious? Harley Road King Conversion
Post by: Anothersaw on July 15, 2016, 08:02:59 AM
I have a 55 Vdc @ 100 A/hr  battery pack and am looking for advice on what I can expect for  speed and range.
D&D motors recommended a 9 HP 72 Vdc motor, but no guidance on range and speed.
The bike is much heavier than what you want, but its what I got.

Tough love is welcome,  as I'm  looking for 50mph and 80 mile range.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Steve

I am not sure how ambitious you are, but I would certainly call you a pioneer.   ;)  My 2009 Electric Motorsport had a large Sepex 36-48V D&D motor.  It was powered by 24 - 50 Ah Hi Power battery cells, which on a good day produced 72V.  Top speed was about 55 mph and my range was between 20 and 40 miles, depending upon my traveling speed. I think the GPR-S weighed something like 400 pounds. The batteries were the weak link on that bike and the bike's BMS didn't help their short life any.   :(

My Vectrix Li conversion (using 18 Nissan Leaf cells) was 60Ah at let's say 140V (146V max down to let's say 136V would give me about 50-60 miles of mixed riding). At 55 mph constant speed I could easily do 40 miles (probably a bit more). At city speeds, maybe 100 miles.

I don't think you can get nearly as much out of your battery due to the lower voltage - you got a little over 5kWh in your pack, where I had a little more than 8kWh - more than 50% more than yours... The only way you are going to do 80 miles is if you ride at something like 25mph

Road King weighs, what, 800 pounds wet weight? Even with the big engine removed, you're probably looking at ~700 pounds converted. This is not a light bike.

I would guess your battery pack would do 20-30 miles at 50 mph.

To make your target range you will need to add significantly more battery or significantly drop your target speed for getting the range. At an actual pace of 35 mph you would get maybe 40-50 miles of range. A much lighter bike at 30-35 mph could probably do 80 miles with your battery pack.

A 9 hp motor pulling that weight would be best described as "leisurely". It could probably get you up to 50 mph, but it will not be fast.
