Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / The App must have updated, or something
« on: November 20, 2015, 09:50:45 PM »
Now the app says "Custom"  . . . either it updated, or maybe when it talked to the bike the bike told it to call the customizable mode "custom."  Go figure.  ???

It's all stated in the manual, you can download it from zero.

Yeah RTFM . . . but I looked at the "FM" first . . . didn't say anything about how you are supposed to set the "custom mode" with the App displaying "Eco" mode.

thanks for the quick responses -- and the information about the delay in mode switching.  It makes sense.

Getting to know my new 2014 'S (after trading in my totaled '12 S)  . . .
I'd like to set the custom mode parameters with the App, but cant figure out how.
In the app, on the settings page, the only mode that shows up is Eco, and you cant seem to toggle to the other modes.
So . . . how do I set the parameters for the Custom mode?  Or are the parameters in the App that are labeled "Eco" really the Custom mode parameters?

Am I missing something here  . . . ?  ???

Ran my 2012 S into a car that turned left right in front of me last month  . . . last night I picked up my new 2014 S to replace the totaled bike.  I am very lucky to have no broken bones and to get the upgraded bike! :)

So far I have ridden the 2014 cautiously on the parkway in the dark on the slick new tires, so I not ready to give any sort of performance comparison yet -- but the bike feels solid, it's nice to have a place to grip your knees, and the seat is initially very comfortable (I may miss being able to slide around to change my riding position, like I could on the '12).

I'll update my reactions after riding a few more times!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Crash Report - 2012 S ZF6
« on: October 20, 2015, 08:03:07 PM »
Bad news -- a car made a left turn right in front of me, I was going about 30 mph, and I hit their right rear fender and went flying over the trunk.   :o

I am (extremely luckily) mostly OK (hand and wrist sprains, I think from being torn from my grip on the handlebars, and some shoulder pain where I probably hit the pavement).

But I am not sure what will become of my beloved Zero -- the front forks were bent so that the front wheel was locked against the frame.  We'll see, maybe it is time to upgrade to a newer model, or see if I can still get the trade in deal for a 2014 (I cant believe I am saying this after almost dying on my bike yesterday  . . .)

You might check if it has been ridden in rain much or on salty roads.

I have a '12 S ZF6 which had the motor replaced with the retrofit upgrade motor by Zero, which they treated as a warranty repair.  I rode a lot in the rain and on salty roads, and my original unsealed motor repeatedly came down with the "Gltitch" (check the threads on thie Glitch on this forum).  Basically, stalling and sometimes even running in reverse.  No troubles yet with the new (sealed) motor, but I haven't been through a winter yet.

You might ask if the motor has been replaced with the upgrade motor yet.

I am very happy with my S, and 5k seems like a good price.  Make sure you test ride it for a while (sometimes the glitch does not show up until 10-15 minute into a ride) and ask specifically whether it has had any stalling problems.

Got my letter too . . .  but since I got the upgrade motor installed in my 2012 S ZF6, I am not really tempted.  Still waiting till they come out with a bike with a built-in fast charger compatible with Chademo or the Tesla system, and maybe a little more range.  Until then, my '12 S gets me to work and back just fine.

This article seems to have been written by a computer that has no idea what Zero Motorcycles is.

Apart from that, it is a good sign that Zero can still raise private investments.

Still enjoying my upgrade motor!

I know this is the 2013+ forum  . . . but since my wife has a 2013 and the NY State Thruway just announced they are installing CHADEMO chargers at several rest stops  . . . might be worth it to us if the charger would work with both her 2013 and my 2012.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Update: 94 zmph
« on: May 27, 2015, 09:18:00 PM »
So this motor pretty much tops out at the same place the old motor did (I could only hit 99 with a substantial tailwind).

Since there are a few of us riding 2012s with the retrofit 2013 replacement motors, I thought I would start a thread on the performance of the bikes with the retrofit motors.  I know some owners have complained about lower top speed, so I thought I would share my own experience.

Yesterday I had a chance to open the bike up on a stretch of road where I would sometimes run flat out before the motor replacement.  Before the motor replacement, I would top out at around 93 or 94 mph on the (uncalibrated) speedometer on the bike.  Yesterday I topped out at 90.  Conditions were good -- no wind, bike nearly fully charged (9 of 11 bars).

So for me there seems to be a slight loss of top speed, but still in spec for the bike.  I have a ZF6 and am pretty skinny, and a mini-windshield on the back, all of which probably increases the top speed.

I would also say that high speed acceleration seems better, the bike does not seem to be straining as much at top speed, and the bike seems to be drawing down the batteries less under similar conditions with the old motor.  With the old motor, driving to work at high speeds would use up 4-5 bars, while yesterday it only used 3.

So I am still very happy to have a functioning bike back!

Still have not been able to really open it up on the highway, but I got it up to 80 or so up a modest hill on a short straightway, so I seem to be getting better performance than you are.

I was able to get the old motor up to 99 "Zero mph" (I think the speedo reads a bit high) -- may be a while before I can test that limit again.  ;)

Of course, I am on the skinny side, and I have the smaller ZF6 battery, so that might affect acceleration, too.

Just got back from sailing my boat back across the Atlantic  . . . and my Zero was waiting with a new motor at the new NY metro dealership, Rockwell Motorcycles.

Rode the bike the 25 miles to work -- cant say I noticed any difference in performance -- but I didnt try going flat out on the windy roads between Newburgh and White Plains, and with an expired registration in my pocket.

I dont mind the different motor sound -- its like the high tech sound of the old motor, only more so.

Zero did the entire repair under warranty, including hauling the bike to the dealer, so I am really happy right now -- its great to get my ride back.  Rockwell Motorcycles seems really enthusiastic about the Zeros -- they are already the no. 2 dealer in the country, apparently.

So I am a happy Zero owner again, for now  :)
