First off, are you sure that the link down event correlates to you losing power? It itself isn't an error per se, but it happening when it shouldn't be is of course a fault. However as you've seen from the second set of logs the link going down alone isn't necessarily noticeable. When you do lose power you're also getting a bunch of other errors and they all seem to be related to overvoltage and overcurrent, and the contactor welded error also isn't good (I think someone explained to me before that it doesn't necessarily mean it is physically welded, but there is something preventing it from opening). I also notice that the "B" voltage is 100V which seems reasonable and lines up with the actual pack voltage reading, but the "C" voltage is anywhere from 113V to 138V. I'm not sure what B and C actually refer to but considering the battery only goes up to 116V that does seem a bit iffy.

More info about the error codes here if you want to try and make more sense of it: https://zeromanual.com/wiki/Gen2/Motor_Controller/CAN_Diagnostics

EDIT: Probably should have clarified, does the time stamp when the link goes down and you get all those errors actually line up with the time when you lose power. There could be other causes, when it was happening to me it was due to a faulty throttle and there wasn't anything in the logs that pointed to it.

General Discussion / Re: Required specs for speed?

You're in the right ballpark, considering an 11kW gas bike (the legal limit for A1 class 125s in Europe) will do 70-75mph and they have less efficient transmissions you could manage 60mph with less. The difficulty with this question is how does that power vary over the charge of the battery. You could in theory have a bike that can manage 11kW right up until the battery is dead if it's not using the battery to the full potential at a higher state of charge, but most aren't configured that way. And also the power output is generally only listed for a full charge.

If we do a little bit of rough math then a 33kW Zero is pulling roughly 285A from a freshly charged battery, if it can manage the same at 10% then it's down to about 27kW. If we multiply 11kW by that same 1.2x then we get just over 13kW at 100% and 11kW down at 10%. I don't know how realistic that is though, if it scales that way or if more voltage sag at a lower state of charge needs to be taken into account.

I can't tell you what the minimum requirement would be, however one of the 7.2kW/h Zeros would easily do that and still get you there at a reasonable rate. I think I've had mine down to sub 20% and still been able to get up to 60mph.

There's currently two batteries on Ebay for around £1k, a 14.4 on its own and a 7.2 with the charger and storage bin (off an S/DS). Both from low mileage bikes too. However they've been on there for quite a while and I highly doubt the sellers have been maintaining them, rather just letting them sit stuffed away in a corner, thus they're most likely junk by now and the sellers make no mention of voltages or how long they've been sitting or even that they might not be any good. Had someone snapped them up when they were first put on they may have got a bargain, but these batteries aren't the sort of thing you can leave sitting around for years until they're needed.

Honestly, with the quality of the video production and the way you present I would never have thought you'd only been doing this a few months and had 30 odd subscribers. Hopefully that number goes up steadily, with the effort you put in you deserve it and more people should see it. I'm glad you're going through the effort to get it road legal too so it can really be enjoyed.

Mate, that was very enjoyable to watch, don't know why you were selling yourself short. Usually the mention of cafe racer alone puts me off but that's because most of them are very poorly done, but your quality of work and the thought and effort put into it is very impressive and far beyond what I was expecting. I've subscribed because I'm really interested in seeing the rest of your work and this thing completed.

So to fuck over one man that justifies shitting on 500 regular people? I'm sure there are other ways he could have gone about it, with the money and resources that he has, that didn't negatively effect his own employees. Shit he could have given them all $100k to make up for it and it would have been a water molecule in a bucket to him.

Also you saying they just shouldn't work for him. What you don't realise is those people didn't choose that job to work for Elon, just like people who work at Apply aren't doing so so that they can work for Cook, people don't work at Walmart to work for Doug McMillon, etc. They go there to work for the company. And it is not Elon's company, he's just part of the board of directors and they're just letting him run riot, because he's the major stakeholder I guess.

So, because I'm comparatively poor I'm not allowed to criticise the rich? Musk has an absurd amount of money, the sort of money that no one single person should have and quite frankly if you're trying to justify it then you're an idiot. He could give away or spend a billion dollars every year for the rest of his life and he wouldn't even get through half of it. That's a thousand million, more than 99% of people will ever see in their entire lives (including the extremely hard working ones), per year. He could give it away to charity and it literally would not matter to him, he has so much that money has no meaning to him, take away half of it and he would still have more than anyone could ever need. If you're seriously arguing against that suggestion, that giving that money to people that do actually need it is wrong, then you are quite simply immoral.

Musk didn't earn his wealth, not even close, along with everyone else on Forbes billionaires list. He got lucky and took advantage of other people. He has vastly more money than any one person should ever have and there is absolutely no arguing against that and if he had any morals he would be doing a Bill Gates and donating the majority of it to charity. There is absolutely no justification for him reacting in any way for not getting the $55 billion, it literally does not matter to him at all except it would put him back in the number one spot as the richest person in the world.

Yeah, while the battery stats might look okay just sitting there at 47% put it under some load and you expose the weak link, and because it is literally a series chain if that one cell can't keep up then it's taking the rest out with it.

Is it possible to convert from the modular packs to a fixed 7.2 pack? Those should be much easier to find on the second hand market because not only was it probably the more popular option for the FX/S there will also be S/DS models as donors. I'm assuming that the connector is the same and the modular bikes will run with just one pack connected and the jumper in place. It would seem that the main frame is also identical on modular and fixed models, maybe at the least you'd need to source some bracketry to hold the pack in place (AF1 maybe?).

The simpler solution is just a regen braking lever on the left. Infinitely adjustable and intuitive.

It's a bushing, which is a type of bearing. Don't really need a ball bearing or similar on something that doesn't rotate very far. The only trouble with bushings is you don't really have anywhere to store lubricant (unless it had an oil groove) and so they're generally made out of self lubricating materials like bronze. Of course you can't also make the bit that goes inside the bushing out of that material so it should really be made out of some type of stainless. Best thing you can do is slather some thick grease on the outside of the bushing to try and prevent water from seeping in between it.

So, what happened this time? It would be nice to get some sort of notification, whether it's an email or a holding page with some details so that we know if the forum is ever coming back or he's decided to kill it. I have to wonder what compels skademo to continuing paying out for the forum when he himself is rarely active on it, presumably isn't even checking in on it daily to notice that it's down. Obviously I'm grateful that he is digging into his own pocket but perhaps it's time to give some power to someone that is regularly active (the other admin, Brammofan, hasn't even been on this year).

That link you clicked on was from 2013 and is talking about the nominal voltage, not the max. That is indeed 116V (116.2V to be exact) and the actual capacity for your bike is something like 6.3kW/h.
