General Discussion / Re: EV startups not a good investment
« on: January 09, 2024, 05:55:52 AM »
Another story that matches the OP:
I got in on the ground floor with an e-truck start up out of Clemson University (legit university in the US). They were working on very high voltage architecture for really fast recharging, seemed like a good idea. After a couple of years they got a nice infusion of VC money then went public. The stock initially soared, but we little guys were not allowed to sell at first. The VC guys made a ton of money. After that, the stock lost 99+% of its value pretty quick. We little guys got played.

This is excellent, thanks.
After going over range and charging issues, they got to (IMO) the second biggest issue with this and other Zeros: low quality suspension and brakes. From the video regarding the components: "It's really a poor bike". Alas, Zero stays with JJuan and mediocre suspension.

Grip heaters?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Lost both Zero dealers in Atlanta
« on: November 19, 2023, 09:08:23 AM »
I've owned 5 electric motos including two zeros. I dumped zero about 4 years ago due to J Juan crap brake rotor issues and even more due to their non support for my local dealer (who subsequently dropped zero for similar reasons). I have hoped this was just zero growing pains, and the DSRX is calling me. Burn me once, . . .

It helps that LW DC charging isn't very fast.

How do they compare at low speeds especially near zero mph?  Is Either more top heavy or drop prone?  Seat height difference that might matter to short leg riders?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / DSR/X questions
« on: April 01, 2023, 09:14:00 PM »

I switched from SR/F to Energica a few years ago, in part because of warping J Juan rotors and mediocre suspension on the Zero.
I'm curious if the DSR/X successfully addressed these issues.

Thanks

Harley LiveWire Forum / Re: Converting my LiveWire to an Adventure Moto
« on: December 21, 2022, 08:21:59 AM »
So by luck I had the good fortune to meet this guy. I am impressed by his work, and I wish him well.

JMO, but HD should have offered a long way up version of the LW that this intrepid forumite is bending over backwards to replicate.
Why? Many reasons, here are a few: the LW is marketed as urban mobility, but without luggage options; the handling is freeway superstable but not low speed agile; there is no grip heater option, and more.
I have to ask: What was HD thinking? They created a pearl, but with a giant asterisk.
A "long way up" version would be better than a gas moto - in its narrow lane by a mile. And who can pay this much?

Before this poster gets attacked (a sad and frequent reflex on this forum) because the message is not what someone wanted to read, please note that the poster has thousands of miles in all terrain on GSs, Tigers, KTMs, Zeroes, and Energicas. I'm far from an expert rider, but I am not writing from an armchair. The LW drivetrain is truly outstanding, and their switch gear and build quality are excellent. I hope they expand their offerings.

Energica / Re: Are you an Energica and LiveWire Owner?
« on: December 20, 2022, 08:07:32 AM »
I've recently owned both, SS9+ for a few years (about 8k miles) and HD LW for a year plus (about 2k miles).
Comparisons:
Drivetrain: LW A+, fantastic and quiet. E: A-, drivetrain is almost as nice but has that whine. YMMV regarding that sound. The E chain also is noisier.
Handling: LW B+ super stable but not nimble. E: A once moving, but only A- overall because it's top heavy and wants to be dropped at super slow speeds
Range: compared to what? A gas moto, they both lose. Compared to each other, the LW is more efficient per kWh, but the E has bigger batteries and longer range
Build quality: A for both but HD is a bit better, especially switch gear.
Charging ease: HD: C- (DC charging is slow, AC is really slow), E: B-, DC charging is slow but better than HD, ditto AC. Also some DC charger compatiblilty issues .
Usability as a tourer or commuter: HD: D, they simply ignored luggage, and the geometry favors interstate stability, not slower speed agility.  E: C+. But the Experia looks better and may raise that grade to A.
Fun to ride: this is subjective, but both get an A+ in my book.
Dealer availability: pretty slim for both, alas.
Riding position: this also is subjective. LW riding position - leaning forward and stretched out made my shoulders hurt, but that's just me.
Styling is subjective. I like them both.
Other stuff: LW mirrors are a joke. Both interfaces could be better, e.g the E cruise control button should be something you can reach with both hands on the bars.

edit: additional thoughts:
both weigh almost exactly the same.
HD lower seat and lower center of gravity are nice for a commuter. But no grip heaters and no reverse gear.
The DC charger compatibility issues I've had with the Energica have been common, and at chargers that worked for the HD. But based on a later post may be confined to the US.

Energica / Techie question about charging with a surge suppressor
« on: November 03, 2022, 06:36:00 AM »
120v AC (US)
Tried to charger through a surge suppressor. Nothing
Bypassed the surge suppressor: Charging as expected.

(In case it matters, the suppressor is a Tripp Lite ultra)

Please, experts only, thanks

General Discussion / Re: EV battery tech update
« on: August 04, 2022, 06:19:14 AM »
Just 2 cents worth:
The progress in computing has been steady and frankly astounding for many years.
Knowing this to be true, some are seduced into thinking batteries should improve at a similar pace.
Alas, batteries are basically a chemistry problem, not an engineering problem. Engineers march on, but the chemistry is stubborn.

Energica / Re: CCS chargers very unreliable!

BTW, agree with DonTom that starting the charge station before plugging in may work when plugging in first doesn’t. I received that tip from an Electrify America helper, too.

Electric Motorcycle News / New US legislation- any emoto angle?

The electric car and truck incentives with be expanded, with limits for high income Americans. Haven’t seen anything about electric motos. Any insights?
