Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Routine Maintenance for 2014 S
« on: December 29, 2019, 09:00:54 AM »
I take my 14 S in once a year and tell them to check it over and fix/replace whatever is needed. It has moving parts and the cost seems well worth it to me. It might be worth looking into getting the motor commissioned, if it has not been done. This shouldn't take long. I typically get billed for 1-3 hours of labor from the shop, depends on what needs done.

You should be able to do this with something like OpenLCA https://www.openlca.org/. It is not super easy or user friendly though. You need to have an idea of the assumptions going in to the computation and have a reasonable database.

The new charger is charging normally and there are no smells. The buzzing is similar to what can occur in other chargers, such as standard car battery chargers. It just caught me off guard since the old charge made a barely audible hum and the new one makes more of the "charger" buzzing sound.
I called Zero and they indicated not to worry, with the caveat of all else behaving normally.
I guess I'll carry on with this charger.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Replacement Stock Charger Buzzing Noise
« on: August 11, 2019, 08:18:15 PM »
I just replaced the original 5 year old on board charger that was dying with a new one that is the latest design. The new charger has a buzzing sound while charging that sounds like a transformer buzzing on an electrical wire or utility power box sometimes can. It is not very loud but definitely different from the soft hum of the original charger. Is this something to be concerned about?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / How does the stock charger slowly die?
« on: August 07, 2019, 09:19:48 PM »
I have an infamous slowly dying stock Calex charger on my S I am replacing soon. I was wondering if anyone could explain like I'm 5 (ELI5) how the slow decrease in maximum SOC happens. Well, maybe not 5, but assuming basic understanding of electrical components and circuits (resistor, capacitor, diode, transformer, etc.). As a first guess, it seems strange that it only charges up to, say 90%. Why does it not just stop charging?

If it is for one case and the rack and the rack fits on 2014 S, I will take it.

When I was asking about this a few months ago it appeared that the options for replacing it are:
1) Buy a new charge controller for several hundred dollars.
2) Buy a new connector for a few dollars and cut the wire and connect the new C-14 plug. You need to be mindful of making a connection that is weatherproof though.

My 2014 S was updated November of 2017 and the SOC was garbage leading to an issue of limiting top speed riding in really cold weather. Had it updated in December 2018 and it seems to be working as it should after a few hundred cold weather miles.

An episode of South Park deals with this issue in an entertaining way. Season 13 episode 12 "The f word".

I have been thinking about getting a silicone mat to heat my S battery after going through this cold winter. Are there any guides or tips for using a heating mat? Such as number of pads, placement, wattage? I would prefer something to plug in and forget while I am at work when it's cold out.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Tires for your Zero
« on: February 18, 2018, 04:14:04 AM »
I am mostly ignorant on motorcycle tires and I am going to get new tires for wet/winter conditions. My dealer is a 75 min drive away making it a bit difficult to get there. Can I go to any motorcycle shop that installs tires to or are there any special concerns with a Zero (belt drive?) to make me want to specifically go to a Zero dealer?

The updated app no longer displays battery capacity. :)

I have the Zero soft bags. They work great for daily commuting since I can quickly take the bags off and bring them in with me. You really want to be careful not to overload them with too much weight, otherwise they can get holes from rubbing against the back wheel.

« on: February 04, 2018, 08:09:07 AM »
It's kind of rediculous this is still a problem. Somewhere there is probably a simple brick-1 or multiplier error in the code. It seems like Zero has a serious lack of coding expertise if it takes months to find and fix (which remains to be done) .

I am interested in hearing from anyone who knows they had the issue of the battery behaving as if it had half the battery capacity before and after this latest update to see if it fixes it. I would like to go get my 2014 S updated as soon as possible if this version does indeed fix that, but my dealer is a 90 minute drive, so I want to make sure if fixes that issue before going. The dealer is in contact with Zero to see if the issue is fixed, but they are waiting for a return call.
