Energica / SS9 seat cover to prevent wet ass
« on: April 25, 2024, 06:17:53 PM »
Any recommendations?  The heavy rains in California combined with the seat stitching and and frequent use and parking outside has led to the foam getting saturated and giving me a wet butt whether it's raining or not.  I'm looking for something specific to the seat - not a full motorcycle cover and not a custom seat.  Something better than the Bink seat cover by DS Covers because it looks only a little better than wrapping a trash bag around the seat.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Help interpreting logs
« on: May 06, 2023, 12:06:04 AM »
Hi Zero enthusiasts,

Is anyone willing to help me interpret these logs, or better yet, guide me to resources so I can do this independently and help others?  I'm looking at a used bike logs and trying to anticipate battery health and range expectations plus perhaps any other issues I'm overlooking completely.  Although the trips taken are short and lower speed, I'm extrapolating a 100%-00% range of 100-160 km at 60 kph.  This seems far below expect performance values, but it could easily be that I'm not looking at this right.  I have some experience with looking at MBB logs, mostly for errors, but limited experience is evaluating MBB logs.

My real concern is being able to comfortably make a one-way commute at 45 miles and 70 mph in all weather, with the option to charge at work.  Bike is a 2nd gen Zero SR.

I would greatly appreciate anyone's opinion on the health of this bike, or again some pointers on education so I can do this myself.

Thank you,

d3

The original SR with a 14.4 kWh pack claims a range of 90 miles at 70 MPH. The new SR with 15.6 kWh pack claims 84 miles at 70 MPH. I know the new platform is bigger/heavier - is that the full reason that the range claim has dropped while the capacity increased, or did Zero decide to be less optimistic? Is the battery chemistry the same between the two battery packs?  Anyone know if the cell voltage at 100% SOC on the 14.4 battery corresponds to 100% of the 15.6, "110%" of the 17.3 or something else?

What else am I missing for an apples to apples comparison of the battery and range?

Thank you.

These two are very close in price and claimed range according to specs.  I don't really care about the bells and whistles; I just want to do 90 miles round trip commute at 70 MPH.

Is the battery chemistry different/better for the "new" SR that I could expect it to perform better in the long run?
I had a hard time finding the range spec for the DSR+PT, but I think it's claimed 97 vs SR+Cyber Store of 93 miles?  Since these are both from Zero, are they both equally accurate or optimistic?
I haven't ridden a power tank model.  I know it will feel more top heavy, but don't think I'll notice much going in a straight line.

I don't like that Zero killed the original SR and prefer that over the DSR. I've read that the Gen 3 bikes are more susceptible to water intrusion than Gen 2.  Are there any other reasons that I'm missing that would swing towards a DSR+PT?

Thank you.

Hit 40k miles this morning on my 2016 SR.
Lifetime maintenance:
On-board charger replaced in warranty ($0)
DC-DC converter replaced out of warranty ($600)
1 set of brake pads ($15)
1 belt ($102)
2 brake fluid changes ($6)
4 sets of tires ($1420)
Electricity ($1200)
Average operating cost of 8 cents per mile.

I ride about 20k miles a year.  If I'm reading things correctly, Energica uses LiPo and Zero uses Li Ion. I've also read that Li Ion batteries will last longer in general, but that wasn't a direct comparison between the specific chemistries used in these packs or give any quantitative values.

I've read on here a suggestion that Energica's shorter battery warranty reflects a shorter expected lifespan.

Can anyone confirm or deny my current assumption that I could expect to get a lot more miles on a Zero before significant battery degradation?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / 2023 Zero SR and Cypher Store
« on: January 24, 2023, 02:18:25 AM »
Hi all,

This likely has been discussed somewhere, but I wasn't able to find it.  I know most of the paid Cypher upgrades went away, but they're still there for the SR and I'm a bit confused.

Does the 2023 SR physically have the same battery as the SRS/SRF/DSRX?  The SR battery is listed as 15.6+ while the others are listed as 17.3.  In the Cypher store, the SR's "10% extended range" has a note that "Standard bikes will need to upgrade to 10% extra battery first", but there is no 10% extra battery upgrade listed.  Is the extra battery included in the base model now and that note just needs to be updated?  Also, is my understanding correct that the 10% extended range is implemented by charging all cells to "110%" by raising the voltage of all cells in the battery, not adding cells that are otherwise disabled?

Thank you

Energica / 70MPH range comparison between SS921.5 and SRF17.3
« on: January 02, 2023, 12:26:50 AM »
I apologize that I searched forums and videos and couldn't find anything to get me close to the answer I'm looking for.  I'm not interested in the power tank.

Battery Model        Claim
Battery ZF15.6+ 84 miles @70MPH
Battery ZF17.3   93 miles @70MPH
Battery SS9      130 miles "extra urban riding"

Can anyone translate this for me?

Also, has enough time passed to get a feel for overall bike reliability, bugs, or battery aging?

2016 SR - 35k miles

...and yes, I know there is a lot of discussion about this, but can't find the answer I'm looking for.

Thank you.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Voltage sag
« on: December 20, 2022, 08:56:11 AM »
Is there anything that one can do about voltage sag?  It's getting pretty significant on my 2016 SR when it's cold. Today, the minimum SOC I hit was 5%. By the time I got to work, it had crept up to 8%. An hour later, it was up to 43% even though it wasn't plugged in.

I can avoid some of the effect by putting the bike on a timer so it warms the battery by charging right before I leave. Is there anything else I can do, or is it just a fact of life in old age?

General Discussion / Tesla Driver != Zero Rider?
« on: October 22, 2022, 04:21:15 AM »
Please help broaden my perspective.

From my view, many, but not all, Zero riders ride it like they stole it and enjoy leaving others in their dust when pulling away from stoplights.

By comparison, Tesla's I see look like they're driven with the intensity of a Nissan Versa.

I know there are several here that own both.   Am I experiencing some kind of observation bias or is there a shred of validity in what I'm observing?  If so, why?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Brake reservoir filled up on its own
« on: September 02, 2022, 07:41:40 AM »
I recently noticed that my brake reservoir is completely full. I bought my 2016 SR used last year and the reservoir was full. The previous owner said it was like that from new and they had never changed the brake fluid. I changed the fluid and filled the reservoir half full. It's not something I've paid mich attention to, so I don't know if it happened gradually or all at once. Internet search was unsuccessful in finding similar issues. Anyone know what would cause this?

I've read a bunch of threads with opinions on tires where performance and longevity were both factors.

My daily commute is 85 miles on the interstate and 5 miles of city streets.  The biggest turns I make are the on- and off-ramps and a few stop signs.  I never hit the twisties.  I'm either on the interstate or on 25 mph city streets.  I live in California, so it never snows and rarely rains.  What would you recommend for tires to get the most miles per $?
