Tech Help / Re: Seasonal changes
« on: August 08, 2015, 05:03:21 AM »
I ride year round, even in snow storms :/

I found my issue to be related to the controller temperature. I created a shroud for the controller out of simple sheet metal, painted it black, and never looked back. It kept the temps on par with the motor and I didn't get any cutting out or odd behavior after that.

I still need to fabricate something to keep water out of the 35 pin connector though as I suspect that is what is causing other issues in serious downpours.

I was getting 68 miles per charge at 60-65 mph on a 2013 SR 11.4 (10.58 nominal) and I wasn't charging at work at the time. It was still enough to get to work, 27 miles away, and get home with 18% to spare.

Soon the bike will be streamlined for winter ;)

THANK YOU for the WINTER Riding Suggestions.  Do you use the PERMATEX MARINE GRADE WEATHERPROOFING DIELECTRIC GREASE on your connectors ?  http://www.permatex.com/products/product-categories/specialized-maintenance-repair/electrical-system-maintenance/permatex-dielectric-tune-up-grease-detail[/b]]http://www.permatex.com/products/product-categories/specialized-maintenance-repair/electrical-system-maintenance/permatex-dielectric-tune-up-grease-detail

I rode my 2014  ZERO S zf11.4 w/ POWER-TANK LAST Iowa Winter .  Average temps were in the 20's with a few of the rides being at an air temp of -7 Fahrenheit (  team, waaaaay below freezing. ). Bike developed "issues"  with the BMS and the Phone APP.

Are there any other nutzy people out there riding a ZERO when it is this cold ??

DIELECTRIC GREASE !!  When I asked ZERO tech support about d-grease they gave me only silence.  My issues are with a defective ( from Day One ) dashboard, defective BMS and range that is mediocre at best.

Quick Question,

Has anyone here in the States seen, got up-close-and-personal / touched a SAIETTA electric bike?  ???

Does anyone know of a SAIETTA dealer here in the US ?

I live in the  "cow and corny" Midwest ( Iowa ) and it is VERY difficult to find CHAdeMO ( http://www.chademo.com/ ) or SAE J1772 L2/L3 ( http://standards.sae.org/j1772_201210/ ) CPs around.  My local coffee house lets me plug in to their outdoors 110 vAC 20S outlet when I stop for some brew and a doughnut.  Charge time is still prohibitively long.  Sure wish someone would have a top case / box that incorporates a ruggedized and weatherproof QUICK CHARGER into it.

Inductive pick-ups for electrical transfer built into major highways would also help e-biking !

THANK YOU !

It does not matter if you have an I.C.E.  or an ELECTRIC Bike, the rider needs to be seen and treated as an equal when it comes to sharing the road.  That is why I want the LOUD horn, wear leathers, gloves and a skid-lid topped with a yellow rubber duckie ( duck's name is DANIEL D. DUCK ).  'Sides being a bit nutz is part of the mistique of Two-Wheeling !

For what it is worth, my HARLEY SPORTSTER is named FELICITY, mt BMW K100RS is named BRYNHILDR, my TRIUMPH goes by BONNIE TRISH, and my ZERO goes by ZELDA.  Wonder.  How many other riders name their bikes and talk to them while riding.  I only worry when I hear my bike answering my questions  :D

BRAMMO  and  ZERO ( Agility SAietta ? ).  With two or three e-bikes in the market arena, the operant word is COMPETITION !  If there are choices for the end user, this will force the manufacturers to use their R&D and Engineering departments to produce products better ( and cheaper ) than the competition.  This is a WIN - WIN situation for those of us who ride e-bikes.

Does anybody have any experience with ZEV quasi-e-scooters

OK, they look like scooters, but if you look at their specs they compare favorably with ZERO  and  BRAMMO BIKES.

For those who want highway "boats", there is always the HARLEY-STYLE e-bikes from BRUTUS

Has anyone ridden ( or even seen for that matter ) one of these?

How long will it be before we have a universal battery system so a "fueling station" would just swap out batteries instead of recharging them.  How 'bout inductive pick-ups to provide bike power on INTERSTATES ( sort of like the DRAYSON B12/69 recharges ) to cut down on "refueling" stops ?

My personal e-bike e-DREAM ---> a battery system that allows me to go 500 miles at 70 mph between charges, and that recharges from 220 vDC in less than two hours.  Oh yeah, the bike with my Dream Battery would be hyper-reliable, hyper low maintenance, and cost less than $8000.00 ::)

Thank you for taking the time to reply.  The only reason I want a different horn is to ensure that I have a reeeeeeeal loud one if I ever need it !

Has anyone converted their ZERO from tungsten filament brake and turn signal bulbs to the new-style LEDS that have load equalizers built into their bases ?  Also has anyone modified their ZERO's brake lights turning them into both BRAKE and RUNNING LIGHTS with dual filament bulbs like a #1157.  My other bikes all have reeeeally loud horns from PIAA http://www.piaa.com/store/Search.aspx?SearchTerms=horns and WOLO MANUFACTURING http://www.jpcycles.com/product/360-102.  Considering the voltage and current draws on my Z-bike would I have any problems with any of these upgrades ?

I have arthritis and need grips that are a bit "fatter" and more comfortable.  Instead of replacing the grips on my 2014 ZERO S I used something called GRIP BUDDIES http://originalbeemerbuddies.com/.  I found them at the shop when I was having my 1985 BMW K100RS worked on.  They make things much more comfortable and have been written up in RIDER MAGAZINE http://www.ridermagazine.com/gear/original-grip-buddies-super-sharkskin-motorcycle-grips-review.htm/ .  Thumbing through a HARLEY catalog I also found covers for my rear brake leverfrom J&P CYCLES http://www.jpcycles.com/search/search?Ntt=foam+lever+covers&N=28012733&Ntk=All .  On long rides these little things help.  Sure wish someone would start a WEB clearinghouse for aftermarket accessories for e-bikes.

A thought about the VICTORY e-Bike.  Their EMPULSE TT was rumored about at the last PROGRESSIVE SHOW WINTER 2014 and now here it is !  This is their first attempt.  I'll give them a few years to come out with something that is all electric, innovative and looks more like a TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE.  But, I might settle for an Agility Global SAIETTA R http://saiettagroup.com/ or even a Brutus V2 Rocket or Brutus 2 http://www.brutusmotorcycle.com/ .  Electric is here to stay.  Time to get some e-choices as well as companies that sell aftermarket e-bike accessories !!!

General Discussion / Aftermarket Wind Screen for ZERO Bikes
« on: July 29, 2015, 03:02:07 AM »
I have windscreens on my other bikes and wanted one for my 2014 S zf11.4 but didn't want to pay what ZERO was asking for an OEM one.  Rummaging through a local thrift store I found a handlebar mount windscreen from NATIONAL CYCLE [ http://www.nationalcycle.com/deflectorscreen-hd.html ] for $10.00 that was just the ticket.  It seems to work fine deflecting the air stream from my upper body.

I have since found clip on / bolt on modifiers that attach to the top of a wind screen to give the rider even more control of the air strteam:

Has anyone had experience with these ?

General Discussion / LED turn / brake light bulb replacements.
« on: July 27, 2015, 11:03:28 PM »
Just found the SYLVANIA / ZEVO L.E.D. equivalent to a #1156 bulb.  Load EQUILIZER is supposed to be built into the bulb's base.  It is not supposed to go squidgy on CAN-BUS  equipped bikes.  Bulb has a lifetime warranty too. !!  Thoughts anyone ?

I have insurance on my phone that covers EVERYTHING like being dropped from 20,000 ft when I'm skydiving or the phone goes down when it is jerked out of its cradle on a bumpy road.  With regular backing up of phone data you only loose a bit of coin each month.  It is worth it to me though !
