Title: My 3 month old 2015 Zero SR stopped charging
Post by: Coolwater on July 12, 2016, 03:34:56 AM
Has this happened to anyone out there?
It worked fine and then it started to trip the house breaker.
After resetting the breaker three times, the motorcycle display now doesn't react as usual when I plug it in.
I can still ride it with 85% charge still. Everything else seems to work ok on the power out side.

update.
The charger did die. It's in the shop.
I'm having separation anxiety already.

Do you mean the GFI is tripping If so break off the ground pin on your charge cord or buy a "cheater" at the hardware store that allows 3 prong devices to plug into old houses with only 2 prongs and try it again.

If you're blowing a 15A breaker make sure nothing else is on the circuit.  There may be multiple outlets on the same breaker, or perhaps the breaker is just old and weak.  Try to find a 20A outlet and try that.

I'm afraid this sounds like the symptoms that lead to charger failure. I think I've read that same thing from several other owners here. Using an outlet without the ground pin seems to work for a while for some of them, than the charger shorts permanently and stops working...

But of course, check what Electric Terry recommends checking first, to rule out simple things.

Interesting note: on my 2015SR I will pop the breaker on a 12A GFCI only for a very brief point around when I first plug in, or when it gets to or near 100÷. If I manually hold in the test under both of those conditions, it stabilizes and works fine. I have a 20A gfci to swap out but haven't yet.

I'm still using a cheater plug 6000 miles later.  I don't even think about it.

Sorry to hear! Hope you do get your bike back soon.

Mine is still new as well, about 1,500 miles/9 months since first put in service and my original charger is still good (knock on wood!). I think I have the latest version, 4 I think, but that has been known to fail too. So it is not clear exactly if the problem has been fixed systemically, is it not, or is it just a bad luck with some poorly installed or sub-standard component and the failures will continue.
