OK, so I can tell you right now the BMS does not have the oomph to balance that large of a delta in an individual cell. The charger doesn't matter, other than getting the SOC high enough, all the cells are connected together to the charger. The BMS has to do the balancing, more power won't help here.

Most of the time we have such a large imbalance in old batteries, it is due to irreversible battery cell aging. We got a lot of 13,14,15 batteries come in with a similar issues, and the only remedy Zero recommends is a battery replacement.

If that cell is aged, the ability to push or pull current into/from it is very different from its pals. If you did manage to charge it up, it would quickly revert to being imbalanced within a few rides at best. Sorry I don't have better news for you.

That being said, if you had the tools and engineering know how to isolate that cell, and trickle charge it to max, you could try it. But that's pretty squarely into dangerous waters for the untrained individual. This pack is more than capable of shocking you to death, or catching fire and burning down your house. Please be careful.

Battery prices may've gone down, but with the current world situation I'm sure the other parts and their shipping costs have gone up dramatically.
Zero uses what are essentially bespoke pouch cells, not the cylindrical cells almost all EV cars use. Those articles almost always talk about those. I'd expect the battery price for Zero has remained constant or increased.

At least with the new batteries they're rumored to be using the same cells as Daimler, and can order more of them, which should help their prices. We'll see when the Cypher III bikes come out.

I agree on the US/Euro rate inflating pricing in the EU, that sucks. The DSR MSRP in dollars went from 16195 to 17995, which seems about right due to supply chain issues and inflation.

2022 SR/Fs and SR/S now come with a single 6kW charger, limited to either 3kw or 6kw, and you can choose to bump the 3kW to 6kW or the 6kW to ~6.5kW

The SR is the only bike with the 3kW chargers of previous models

As others have said, this seems like a major failure in either the controller or the motor.

A quick test(if you have a torque wrench) is to disconnect the motor leads from the controller and see if the rear wheel/motor shaft spins freely. If it does, I'd guess the controller went out. If it doesn't, I'd suspect a mechanical failure in the motor windings or magnets.

Either way, this is definitely one of those where you'd probably want a dealer to handle it.

But it still doesn't happen to every Zero with post-v17 firmware. So a combination of duff EEPROM data and firmware still sounds possible. Which is where I'd start looking to diagnose it (this is my job). As surprising as it sounds this sort of thing is not really as hard to diagnose as you might think ... depending on just how shittily the firmware was written in the first place.

Cas :)

Yep, could easily be this. Bad eeprom+firmware, some form of delayed onset battery defect, or battery changes at a certain/age + firmware.

The only thing that makes me point towards hardware is Zero saying they're getting a refund from Farasis. If it was really just fw, I imagine Farasis would show the battery is fine, and not give them money for it. And at ~4-6k a pop + shipping/labor, having to replace batteries at their cost would strongly incentivize a FW fix.

It could also be that Zero ended up with some bad battery cells from their Chinese supplier and the weak cells are what is causing the charging and SOC problems. When I had my 2010 Electric Motorsport GPR-S with its 24 prismatic Hi Power brand batteries. They were all of varying quality and some would deplete and charge faster than others. That gave the bike's very basic BMS fits.

Then this problem would manifest in the exact same way on 2018+ S, SR, DS, DSR, FX, FXS, and FXE models. It does not. This is firmware.

I'd argue the opposite, if it was firmware, every SR/SRF/SRS would have this in the same way. And they don't.

Lithium Ion Battery Manufacturing is very hard. It could easily be some kind of small processing defect or batch issue that started after the SRF release in 2020+. Maybe the cells or pack modules are produced on different lines or at different factories for different form factors. Neither of us have nearly enough information to make this claim. I'd hope that if it was firmware they'd have found and patched it by now, but who knows with them.

All post 2011 Zero bike models have hibernate from their release, it is the name for putting the microprocessors in the BMS and MBB into low power mode, but not completely off, so they can keep track of time and be keyed on later. Not something anyone typically thinks about, unless you get stuck in it

Seeing this a lot lately, it's most likely the BMS getting stuck in hibernate. Zero has been unable to give me a cause. Usually we'll try disconnecting and reseating the BMS, and if the issue occurs, replacing the BMS is the next step.

Sorry you're experiencing this.

Ironically I have some insight into this.

The really crazy battery SOC drops, most likely like the OP, have been shown to be hardware defects. Zero gets a full refund from Farasis for these.

There are definitely some software issues with the algorithm itself, and they've certainly indicated that they're trying to fix both problems, but it's not quite as clear cut as ya'll think.

Zero Motorcycles Firmware Release Notes
May 23rd, 2022
   MY20/MY21/MY22 MBB: Rev 22 BMU Rev 4 BMS Rev 19 SR/F SR/S MY22 SR
   * Improvements for CCM update process
   * Fixed false positive Contactor/Battery fault under certain conditions
   * Fixed false positive DC_DC_LOW fault notification
   * Fixed BMU fault at extremely low temperatures
   * Resolved ride mode errors upon app sync limiting top speed and power

Where did you get the release notes?  The Zero web site still shows v21 as the latest.
I'm a dealer, release notes get included with the FW whenever it's released and shown in our tools. The website takes longer usually.
I would guess they wrote the release notes and then did a new version of FW internally and forgot to update the release notes. There is no 22 in the field

The MBB v23 release is out for FST bikes and is supposed to partially fix the issue. Supposedly it'll reset the bike modes to their full power, not sure the app is fixed though

13
I've mentioned this before, but if you have an FST bike(an SR, SRF, or SRS),  and you have connected the official app to the bike, you are most likely now limited to FST SR top speed and torque levels.

If you have a serial cable, you may be able to issue the riding_modes command to see what your the limits of your bike for each mode, but I am unsure if that is available without logging in.

A fix for this has been promised by Zero to come out soon. The only near term fix is to have the dealer reload the latest firmware and not to connect the app. This means no custom mode.

14
Most common cause of this is the bike model getting unset in the MBB, either by an update or something else.  Anyone with a serial cable/login or a dealer should be able to reset it very quickly
