Title: Is the FXS headlight sufficient for dark road travel?
Post by: Burpman on November 19, 2016, 05:26:03 AM
Hello Folks

I'm planning to order an 2017 FXS tomorrow.
Still have one question.
Is the headlight sufficient for dark road travel?

Kind regards from a rainy Netherlands ;-)

Not 100% pleased with mine. Low beam seems dim, high beam just a dumb round pattern, and the fender casts a shadow just in front of the bike. I'm looking to mount auxiliary lights on the drop bars. I have a 2015 FX, if it was an FXS I would probably replace the front fender with a low mount from an S.

Has anyone done a low fender on an FXS? I think it's one of those things that can go either way looks wise.

I'm almost certain to order an FXS once the UK grant is sorted out for them.

Not as far a I am aware of... I'm actually in the market for a low fender but haven't found a replacement that fits yet.

I was just talking to my dealer about this yesterday as I am considering selling my 2014 Zero S in the spring to get an FXS and I plan to try to use a front fender from a Zero S.  You can get a front fender from a 2014 or 2015 Zero S and it will be black to match the color of the FXS.

1. yes the headlights suck and are completely inadequate if you do any real travel in the dark. they will be my next mod on the bike. i plan to replace with LED pods. looks like it should be pretty easy and use most of the OEM parts.

2. yes you can use an S front fender. i saw a pic of someone who had done it. thought it looked a little whack to be honest.

I'm using the S fender, I think it looks great though it does make the headlight assembly look incomplete.
I'm worried that when it starts raining it won't provide enough protection.

I'll see if I can get a picture tomorrow.

Headlights are not good enough for pitch black travel, you're constantly taking blind corners even at low speeds.

The headlight has been plenty good for me but I don't ride at night a lot. I'll hold down the flash to pass lever to have both bulbs on if I want more light

I have an FX in the Netherlands. The headlight is ok. Not brilliant. But fine for dark night offroading and polder riding etc.

That's great to hear (read) the other models don't appeal to me that much. And the FXS fits me better.
Tried the DS also but my knee's keeps touching the tank.
I, have terrible long legs (inseam 100cm) ;-)

What if you'd extended the foot rests?

I got a 2015 S fender in black.
To bad it won't fit on the 19' DS/FX wheels:

why would you put a tight, road fender on a dirt bike? destined for disaster in my opinion. unless you of course never ride off-road?

the bolt pattern for most front fenders is pretty consistent. don't like yours, take it off (4 bolts) and go to your local moto shop and find one you like. chances are the pattern will be the same, or close enough to easily modify.

The FX has the same headlight as the FXS. So the experience with the lights is simular.

I lowered the front fender on my FX using some 1" spacers. I think I like it better, although I still want a low mount fender. I'll share when I figure something out.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161123/34c400c307fef6aac9540fc6362a9fbf.jpg)

[/quote]The DS isn't a dirt bike, more of an allroad like the Multistrada or Tenere. I'm looking for a new fender that can be mounted S style but no success yet, most have a different distance between the bolts. I can adapt it but if I don't have to that will be better.

Hey BertTrack.

With "other models" i meant other than our FX and (mine to be come) FXS ;-)
What is the longest distance you drove with your FX?

130km on one charge doing granny speed. 40km/hr. :) in the summer. Colder temperatures cut it short a lot.
