Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: SR/F traction control experiences
« on: April 19, 2020, 04:23:42 AM »
Traction control for slow street riding is a crutch that means you are really, really bad at controlling the motorcycle and probably should spend more time doing drills and dropping your bike. Eventually you will learn your own traction control, right in your brain. And best of all it works for cornering and stopping.

Don't get me wrong it could be even safer to have aids like traction control on top of good skills. My point is that if you think you NEED traction control simply to ride a motorcycle on public roads, you probably shouldn't be riding motorcycles on public roads since you have no clue what you're doing.

Glad that you figured it out, but seriously, someone who's sniffing traffic but can't mitm himself with a proxy and his own cert on the phone? What?

The whole electric wheelspin thing has been hugely overblown by incompetent riders. The actual problem is the bike makes huge torque from a dead stop with no warning whereas with most gas bikes you have to rev em up at least a little. This isn't an issue for a competent rider who is always calculating where the traction is and how much is available. But since that's a difficult skill you will only learn riding on track we are hearing many many tales of unqualified users dropping electric bikes after an ambitious throttle twist and blaming the machine.

If you want to ride offroad, do stoppies, or hit rough stuff fast and still be able to stop on a newer bike you can disable the ABS permanently without consequences by pulling the special 25 amp fuse in its own holder under the seat. In other words the FX / FXS should not have come with ABS.

First, don't worry about the power. You won't be able to use it anywhere but a straight line without many hours of practice and a few crashes. If you never go to the track, and don't ride like you're on a track, you'll never figure out the power. So be realistic.

Second, if power is that important, you want a DSR not a DS. And if power is really important, and you want to race people, you want a gas bike. No iffs ands or butts. For the price of a DS, you can get a 1000CC supersport that will leave everything for dead, possibly including you.

Third, gas bike CC alone is almost totally meaningless. So stop talking like that. A 250 race bike might make 40 hp. A Ninja 250 might make 25. A 650 might make half the power of a 600. Talk about power, or power to weight instead.

Fourth, it seems like what you may actually be getting at is you want a great powerband with great torque always available. This is one of the premier strength of ebikes. You will always have plenty of grunt, even if the bike isn't that fast.

You shouldn't be riding a bike you can't pick up by yourself.

You don't want to use a FX or FXS for motocross without changing the suspension. Neither one has enough travel stock.

Zero sells a small number of bikes, but enough to stay in business. It's possible that they could even be in a position to make a profit if they're not already.

« on: March 03, 2020, 06:01:52 AM »
Lol, someone may have gone to embry riddle but they clearly haven't read much pilot literature or talked with many pilots because "high(er) density altitude" and "low(er) density altitude" are commonly used, and correct, phrases. What a petty argument, since everyone gets the main point that other things equal, less air pressure = low drag = more EV range.

Range and performance starts dropping noticeably under 60* on my FXS. 45* is cold enough that range and performance are significantly impacted.

The idea of this thread is to come up with a way for any of us to independently verify whether Lightning actually sold LS-218s to a regular consumer, ideally without going to California. I have faith that there is likely a solution to this problem if Lightning actually has sold LS-218s to regular consumers.

Re impartiality of the electric motovlogger, judge for yourself: we're talking a guy who we KNOW is courted by the company to the extent that the CEO goes on a ride with him, he has a deposit on an (undelivered) bike, and even moderates the Facebook owners group for Lightning. Ask yourself if such a person has a conflict of interest. Yeah, uh, in what universe DOESN'T he have a conflict of interest?

Re the bikes themselves, they are unequivocally badass and nobody claimed otherwise although apparently the Strikes so far allegedly delivered are not completely finished, which is a shame. Anyway, the question here isn't whether the bikes are awesome (they are) the question is whether the company is being honest. There is cause for great skepticism on this last point.

No one said or thinks MVetter is a shill. His locked thread on the front page of this forum is great evidence of his impartiality.

On the other hand, the biggest electric motovlogger is definitely a shill, publishing almost completely one-sided info on Lightning as the company courts him. Your viewers deserve better, as many of them may know next to nothing of the situation and see your endorsement as a go-ahead to make a deposit, even though there is good reason to believe that may be an unwise move at this point in time.

Lightning / Re: Lightning Strike Carbon Edition Review part 1
« on: February 23, 2020, 05:55:57 AM »
Traffic laws are for the lowest common denominator and if you don't disobey them constantly you probably have little business in the very dangerous business of riding a motorcycle on public roads.

I thought it's a good review. But would like to see more technical details. Maybe a teardown.

Anyone else have range figures?

I believe he is a regular person who happened to put an order for a bike in just at the right time and paid the full amount.

I give your assessment the benefit of the doubt and contrary to what that other poster said I certainly don't think you are connected to the company. Can you think of any way we could independently verify that these bikes are actually being sent to unaffiliated consumers? How might we do that besides traveling to California and trying to talk with people who possess a Strike?
