Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: SR/F complaints
« on: June 07, 2019, 11:39:29 PM »
I am concerned that there is a lot of incorrect information on this forum thread.

We just called EuroCycle Reno.  They told us there is nothing wrong with their Zero SR/F.

The dealer in Sacramento is called Elk Grove Power Sports.  Our internal systems show we have only shipped them one Zero SR/F. If there was another, I suspect it was one of our regional sales manager's demonstrators for a demo event.  Perhaps the person was confused by this.

Zero Motorcycles is shipping demonstrators first.  Then, pre-solds.  I don't believe any dealer has received a stocking unit.  There is MUCH work still to do to fulfill the pre-solds, and that is the current focus.  I encourage anyone in the United States that has an order in place to follow up directly with Jeff J. on the Zero Sales Concierge team.  He has the most accurate and current information.

Thank you for starting this thread.  I am very interested to see what experiences people have both with higher power home EVSE and how many support higher power in the wild today.  It's my understanding that 90% of the charging infrastructure in the US is Level 2, but I can't quantify how many offer higher power.  I do know that many of the EVSE in Europe along freeways offer higher power.  But real experiences from people in the world would be very helpful.

Here are a few links of interest:

All,

Zero Motorcycles's Limited Motorcycle warranty IS available in writing.  It is available online and in the owners manual. It does not differ by region.  See it here:  https://www.zeromotorcycles.com/warranty/

 It also very clearly states:

WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY THIS LIMITED WARRANTY?

- Damage, malfunctions, or performance problems caused by the installation or use of any charger not sold or approved by Zero;

Thus, the simple act of installing any third party charger does NOT void your warranty.  Zero  Motorcycles just doesn't cover damage, malfunctions, etc that are caused by the installation or it's use.  It's the same for every third party product that Zero doesn't sell directly and the same for all such products sold for motorcycles.

When any issues arise, Brandon and I speak directly and always are able to come to an accurate decision.

Hello Aaron,

Strange, just checked the 2017 manual, it says:

Zero S ZF13  pitch 8   20-30kg
All   other    pitch 11  25-76.5kg

This looks like an odd copy-paste between krikit spec and frequency measurement spec...

Furthermore, where do you come to the point that ZF6.5 has 8mm pitch and ZF13.0 has 11mm?

Yes, these are typos that are getting corrected in the current manual.  And you are right that the ZF6.5 does not have an 8mm pitch belt.  Ignore the model designation and only look at the belt size.  The frequencies apply to the relevant belt.

Sorry for the confusion.

Here are the relevant pages from the newest owner's manual.  The 8mm frequency range is applicable to all 2013 and newer motorcycles that have that belt.

8 mm --> 96.3 to 125 Hz
11 mm --> 42.5 to 73.6 Hz

I assume that we should pull the plug once the dash display shows 100%, which on my 2014S is after the pack is balanced, which it does about 30 hours after recharging to 98%.

I leave that up to you and it depends on whether you are storing for the long term. The key change is we are dropping the guideline/requirement that you must or should keep it plugged in all the time.

With respect to seeing some variation in the SOC report at the top end of the range, I would also make sure you have updated the firmware. Not sure if it would apply in this case, but there are some improvements that were made that might apply here.

Long-term Storage
For planned long-term storage (more than 30 days), we recommend draining the power pack to a ~60% state of charge, and leaving the charger unplugged.
Many thanks for the info! Only (slightly snarky) question: is there any way to drain to ~60% aside from going for a ride?
(Fort. I live in the bay area, and can ride year-round)

My slightly snark response, "Riding is always the best way to drain a power pack."  :)

All kidding aside, there isn't another way that can be done safely by an owner or dealer.  Sorry.

Hi fellow owners!

Zero is in the process of changing our charging and storage recommendations for 2013 and newer motorcycles, but it has nothing to do with power pack overheating, lawyers, or any of the other issues discussed above.  We’ve learned much from several years of experience with our current cells and from data provided by the manufacturer. We are applying these learnings in a number of areas.  One key change is that we are no longer requiring that you always keep the motorcycle plugged in. In fact, we have found that our 2013 and newer motorcycles should have even longer and healthier lives if the motorcycle is left unplugged when charging isn’t need.  We’ll be launching a communications plan to all owners in the next few weeks, but the new charging recommendations for 2013 and new bikes are:

"Charging Recommendations for 2013 and newer Zero Motorcycles (All Models)

Regular Use
After each use, you should plug your motorcycle into an AC power source to recharge.  Once it is charged, you should disconnect it from the AC power source. Leaving your motorcycle off the charger will maximize long-term power pack health.

While unplugged and keyed off, the motorcycle's electronics will consume a very small amount of power and the power pack will drain extremely slowly. If you don’t ride for an extended period (30 days or more), you may want to plug the motorcycle in for a few hours to charge it prior to your next ride.

Long-term Storage
For planned long-term storage (more than 30 days), we recommend draining the power pack to a ~60% state of charge, and leaving the charger unplugged.

Once again, the power pack will drain extremely slowly over time. Check state of charge (SoC) at least monthly, and charge it back up to 60% if it has dropped below 30%. When you’re ready to take your motorcycle out of storage to ride it again, plug in the charger for at least 24 hours to ensure optimal cell balance is restored.

Warning: Never store your motorcycle at a state of charge of less than 30%. Leaving the power pack discharged below this level for a prolonged period could damage the power pack and void the warranty."

As an owner of multiple Zero motorcycles, I had an impossible time keeping them all plugged in. So from my personal perspective, we are just relaxing our guidelines to make them even more enjoyable.

Hi All,

It seems the original post has created some concern for new owners of MY17 Zero DSR and SR motorcycles globally.  Rest assured that all the 2017 SR and DSR motorcycles received the highest performance parts and meet the specifications that Zero published.

With respect to the higher performance Sevcon Controller, the label provided by Sevcon only lists the power rating at 80V, but as reported in prior posts, our motorcycle does operate at a higher voltage and thus delivers higher performance.  Don't overlook the label in the picture bellow the Sevcon sticker that clearly states MY17 DSR 13.0. I can confirm that the Sevcon Part Number 634A85210 is the one called out in our current internal specification.

NOTE: These labels are hidden under the formex covering the controller. This is a high voltage area.  Be careful!  We use a discharge tool before we touch this area.

With respect to the motor, it is easy to overlook the R after the IPM.  I can confirm that the current, correct motor part number for a 17MY SR and DSR  is 30-08100.

As we strive to produce the best motorcycle possible at a competitive price, suppliers and part numbers can change at any time. So the lawyers would likely want me to remind you that Zero may change these designations at any time.  :)  If there are further questions, you can always ask your dealer to work with us to answer such questions or provide other confirmations.

Enjoy your ride!

Rick,

As you have pointed out, the email from our inside sales person is incorrect. I will follow up with the person to address the error.

In general, I ask all our employees to NOT interpret the Limited Warranty or information in the Owner's Manual to avoid such errors.  It's also why I generally don't comment on these discussions online.  Instead, it is best to review the specific terms on our website here:

http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/warranty/

Thank you for helping correct this.

Regards,
Aaron

vkruger,

Especially since your motorcycle is under warranty, I want to urge caution. As several have pointed out, it's not clear why you think the kickstand is the problem.  There is a Dash Error code that should confirm whether it's down or not.  But its likely best to work with a dealer to sort this out.

In particular, you should avoid shorting the red and black wires on the kickstand switch that can have bad consequences. We have seen instances where people damage their MBB and other components when attempting to make kickstand modifications. Cutting the wire is also highly discouraged.

Patrick,

It was our fault on the warranty error in the system.  Since yours was a factory demo originally, it had not been recorded correctly.  We updated our records.  Sorry about that, but happy your motorcycle is back on the road.

Enjoy the ride!

Hey BikerJared,

I am not sure who told you these are backordered, but we have five in stock right now.  Part number is 10-03267.  Your dealer should be able to order it for you and have it drop shipped.

Note that ours is a dumb adapter.  We have this note on our website.

"Also, some public J1772 charging stations require the vehicle to authenticate itself. The SAE J1772 Charging Adapter does not support charging stations that require such authentication."

New design for 2015 was recently released.  The larger master cylinder and the new throttles made the older version difficult to install.

I believe Zero just replaced the distributor in Australia. So you should be able to get these ordered locally again.  PM me which dealer you are using and I'll follow up on my end.
