Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Has Anyone "Dirtified" an FXS?
« on: December 23, 2020, 09:03:17 PM »
I haven't been riding my FXS on the street much lately, but wondering if could make it a bit more dirt worthy and take it on some single track dirt trails.

I guess I could just add knobby tires to it, but wondered about 21/18 inch wheels and maybe a chain kit.

Has anyone looked into this or gone this route?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Why No Zero on Long Way Up?
« on: September 24, 2020, 09:01:43 PM »
It seems like if you need a reliable electric adventure bike ready to go for a long distance trip, there is only one real option.  A Zero DSR.

Why did the show go with HD?  Did HD just offer to pay more money?

Buy Sell Trade / 2019 FX For Sale (Sold)
« on: September 03, 2019, 07:16:43 AM »
I copied this from my local Craigslist ad:

This is an all electric, street legal, dual sport motorcycle weighing 289 lbs. It's got the torque of a 450-500cc dirt bike, but cruises smoothly on the highway at 70+mph with a top speed just shy of 90 mph. Range is completely dependent on how much speed and throttle you use.  I found it averaged around 60 miles a ride at normal speeds. It takes between 9-10 hours to recharge from 0-100% and plugs directly into any 110v wall socket. No need to stop at the gas station, you start with a "full tank" every ride.

It has no gears making it an extremely easy bike to ride. Just twist the throttle and go. No heat, loud noise, vibration, etc. Feels like riding a big bicycle. It has three different ride modes. Eco, Sport and Custom. The Custom mode can be adjusted using a smart phone app. I've currently got Custom mode setup as a slow mode with Eco being middle power and Sport giving you 100% of the available power.

Zero has sold out of their 2019 year model bikes and won't be delivering more to dealers for a few months. This is a good opportunity to get a great deal on a 2019 model with factory warranty. This is the lowest maintenance motorcycle I've ever owned. It needs no gas, no oil, no oil filter, no coolant, no chain to lube, very few moving parts.

About the bike:
I am the original owner, purchased it new on 2/20/2019.
It's got 2020 miles on it and will go up slowly until sold.
New the bike comes with a 5 year transferable warranty on the battery which is good until 2/20/2024
Also comes with a 2 year transferable warranty on everything else that is good until 2/20/2021

Just curious if anyone has had the SR/F on a track yet and how it went.

I'm guessing Bill will have his there on 10/14, but wondering if anyone else has already done it.

5
I'm curious if anyone has experience with both.

Should the performance be very close between these two bikes?

Last week, I picked up the last DSR made in 2019 and opted for a Power Tank to be installed in it for additional range.  Where I live, charging stations haven't made it yet.  I rode the bike home 52 miles from the dealership and parked it feeling like I had made a mistake with the purchase.  Initially, I called the dealer to talk about returning it, but eventually decided to go ahead and keep it.

At first, I was underwhelmed with the bike.  From reading here and ZMOG, I thought it was going to be this torque monster the way people talk about it, but it doesn't feel excessive at all.  I can't get the rear wheel to spin on pavement no matter what I try.  It feels a little sluggish in Sport mode from 0-30, but after that it feels pretty good.  I've got another ICE bike that claims 93 ft-lbs. of torque and it accelerates quicker than the DSR and feels more aggressive to ride.  I just expected more out of 116 ft-lbs. of torque. It's also more top heavy than I was expecting with the Power Tank installed.  Initially pretty off putting, but you get used to dealing with it.

Once I decided to keep it, I started riding it a bit and it started growing on me.  I did a dual sport ride on it this morning. 133 miles total at 34mph with about 50/50 dirt. I was happy with the range. I think I could have gotten 150 miles, but I got bored and sped up at the end. The FX will only go about 50 miles at those speeds, so all of that extra range was nice. The DSR is surprisingly nimble in technical off pavement spots, not to mention a blast in the paved twisties.

When I got home from the ride, I immediately jumped on my daughter's NC700X DCT and it was night and day difference.  Even though the NC is a relatively smooth running ICE bike, it felt like I had jumped on chitty chitty bang bang by comparison.  After a 4 hour ride on the DSR, I was immediately hit with all the vibration, noise, heat and lack of torque on the NC700X.  Aside from the brakes and ergonomics, the DSR felt like a better bike all around.

The other things that stuck out were vibration and heat.  The NC is pretty smooth running ICE bike, compared to doing a few hours on the DSR, it was really shaky.  The other thing that surprised me was the heat.  I rode all morning in full gear and didn't really get that hot on the DSR, I just didn't think it was that hot outside.  Then I jump on the NC, give it a few throttle whacks and all the sudden my legs are hot.  Few more minutes that heat is rising up into the saddle and blowing on my chest and I start getting hot for the first time during the whole day.

The DSR is like two bikes in one.  Put it in Eco mode and go down some two track and it reminds me of my old CRF250L.  Just putts along rolling over everything.  Jump on the twisties and put it in Sport mode and all the sudden, its a canyon carver pulling hard out of the corners.  Another cool thing,  it doesn't drop charge fast after 30% like the FX and you have speed limit power right to the very end.  I was doing 60+ mph with like 3% or something.

Today's rides pretty much made the DSR a keeper for me.  It's a pricey mofo, but it does some cool things that other bikes can't and I happen to dig those things enough to pay the asking price.

There are a lot of questions about how far various Zero models can go on a charge.  I started a tracking discussion on my 2019 FX range here:

https://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=9042.0

Since I just bought a 2019 DSR (14.4) + Power Tank, I figured I'd start a range tracking thread for it as well just in case people were interested in real world range numbers on that bike.

Here is the range info for my first long ride on my 2019 DSR + Power Tank from today:

Distance   Charge Used   Avg Speed   Max Speed   Min Temp   Ride Time
132.82      100%              33.7             63.8            75.2     3:56:28

I did the whole ride in Eco mode and tried to keep the throttle as even as possible with no high speed bursts

I'll update this as I go if there is interest.

My DSR and FX both have the standard 110 plug for slow charging only.

My work has a row of those J-plug charging stations that are free for use for employees, but they do not have any 110 outlets in the area.

Is there a cable or adapter or something that would allow to run one of those J-plug cables over to my bike, convert it over to a 110 plug and charge it that way?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Weak Rear Brake on DSR?
« on: June 19, 2019, 08:00:16 AM »
I just took my new DSR out for a spin and noticed the rear brake is really weak compared to every other motorcycle I've ridden.

So weak, I can't get ABS to engage.  Once I disabled ABS, it stopped better in the dirt, but will not skid the rear tire on asphalt even with me standing on it.

Front brake fine.  Rear brake not so much.

Normal for these bikes?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / No More DigiNow?
« on: June 19, 2019, 04:11:07 AM »
Sounds like it.  First this was posted on ZMOG:

"I recently tried to contact diginow (to) order...  They decided not to make their product anymore!!!"

Then this:

"Existing orders will get fulfilled. There will be an announcement about all this soon."

I'm considering getting a Quik charger from Zero just to have a spare off board charger in the garage in case one of the on board chargers fail.

I assume I could use it even if the on board chargers fail?  Can I use it on the FX and DSR?  Can it be used in conjunction with the onboard charger on both bikes?

I've never seen one in use and not completely sure how it works.  Anyone have any experience with them?

I know... its been beaten to death, but since I've got one on order, I just gotta ask one more time.

116 ft-lbs. of instant torque, no traction control, just how dangerous is this bike?

I ask because another DSR owner just posted a high side report on ZMOG after owning and riding the bike for 3700 miles.  He said he was making a turn at 15 mph in Sport mode on a dry, but freshly repaired road and the bike pitched him, road rash, broken collar bone, damaged bike, etc.

I totally get that on a demo ride a Zero can catch an unsuspecting rider, but after 3700 miles of experience with the bike, why is this kind of thing happening?  It's not the first time I've read this either.  Pinaero on YouTube said during his 8.000 mile review of the bike that he had recently low sided it unexpectedly.

It makes me wonder what is it about the bike that is throwing riders off after thousands of miles of experience with the bike?  I read a lot of motorcycle forums and I don't see this type of pattern anywhere else, where someone says I've been riding X bike for Y thousands of miles and today it surprised me and threw me off.

Is this a coincidence or is there something inherently dangerous about this particular bike?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / FX 7.2 Range Discussion
« on: May 29, 2019, 05:02:41 AM »
I figured this would be a good place to talk about the range of a FX 7.2.  It seems to be a frequent question around here.

I bought a 2019 FX 7.2 in February 2019.  I'm over 6 foot and around 265 lbs.  I'm a total data nerd, so I started tracking rides and performance immediately with the bike to find out what reality was.

Here are the ride stats from my last 15 rides to give you an idea of the range of the FX:

If you are substantially lighter, you might go a little farther than this.  There is a guy that weighs 155 lbs on the Facebook Zero Motorcycles Owners Group that says his FX gets better mileage than what I get on mine.  Most everyone else I talk to says my numbers match theirs and some even say they don't get as much as I'm showing above.

Basically, if you want to make 60 miles, you keep your average speed under 30 mph.  If you want to go 80 miles, keep it under 25 mph.  If you want to go 100 miles, keep it under 20 mph average.  Going over 30 mph average will make it drop fast.  Also, keep in mind cold temps reduce these numbers and higher temps increase them a bit.

I did another ride this week where I knew it was going to be a short ride, so I hammered it all the way:

Total Distance: 42.10 mi
Moving Time: 1:06:16
Average Speed: 38.1 mph
Elevation Gain: 1,798 ft
Max speed: 88.1 mph
Avg Air Temp: 81.5F
100% of the charge used.

This is what the speeds of this ride looked like to average out to 38 mph:

You can see at the end of the graph where I was holding it wide open throttle and the bike was just continually slowing down as the charge faded away.

On this last ride, I just went out to have fun and run off the full charge of the battery.  At one point you can see on the graph, I ran the bike wide open throttle for a couple of miles (@88 mph) and ran it into thermal protection mode doing so and had to slow down for a while.  That ran the charge down a fair bit.

After that, I went into town to run some errands and that's the slower mid section of the ride.  But even, after getting the charge in the 30% range, it still had enough to hit ~70 mph on the way home.  Once I got sub 10%, I could no longer hit 70 mph.  It was 65 mph, then it keeps dropping fast from there.  At say 6%, it won't hit 50 mph anymore.  By the time I got to my street, I was at 0% and it wouldn't go over 30 mph.

That's a weird thing to get used to with electric bikes.  Unlike gas bikes where the performance is consistent to the last drop of gas, the performance of an electric bike deteriorates as the charge goes down.  At 100% charge, the front wheel flies up on its own almost as it races up to 80mph.  Around 30%, 70 mph becomes the max speed.  At 7% charge, I can barely hit 40 mph and limp home.  All stuff I wish I would have known prior to buying a Zero and things to factor in on a ride.

It takes 10-11 hours to recharge from 0%.  Also, something else to consider, the bike goes into thermal protection mode if you hold it at or above 70 mph for over 2 miles or so.  Going into thermal protection mode is NOT fun on the highway as it cuts power drastically.  If you can get by holding 65 mph for your longest highway stretch, the FX should be fine.  It's got plenty of power to be on the highway, passing power and such, but it just doesn't like holding those higher speeds for very long.

The FX was not designed for and really doesn't like going highway speeds for any length of time.  It's a great stop sign to stop sign bike, but its not cut out for long highway miles.  The DS/DSR fits that function better, I hear.

I've found the range estimator to be pretty accurate towards the end of the charge.

Multiple times now, I've gotten to 0% on a ride and then I start watching the range meter like a hawk.

I've rolled into the driveway after 2-3 miles on 0% and the range meter was at .4 miles remaining.

I watch it much more closely than state of charge for estimating miles.  So far, it has not led me astray.

Granted I better be on a 30 mph road once it gets under 9% as that's about as fast as its going to go the rest of the way home.

I recently did a test.  I got on the highway and put it in eco mode and held it wide open at 70 miles an hour for several miles. And it didn't overheat. Then I turned around to go back and realize that I had an 18-20 mile-an-hour Tailwind. As soon as I turned around and did the same thing going the other direction, it overheated in about two to three miles.

I dropped it down to 60 miles an hour and let it cool off. The whole trip was 17 miles and I burned 47% of the charge in that time. I wonder if it could actually make 30 miles at 70 miles an hour or not.

On the way home, I thought I'd test it going 70 mph again but across the wind so it wouldn't be a head wind or tail wind.  I started at 50% and found a road and took off.  It took longer this time, but it over heated again.  But instead of slowing down, I just held it knowing that if it moved from the first stage of thermal protection to the second stage, it would slow me down anyway, but it never did.

So, I just kept running 70 mph until I hit 28% and then it started slowing me down.  69, 68, 67 mph.  At that point, I turned off to go home.  Then it got really fun.  The charge started dropping really fast.  I got down to 0% really quickly, then the bike died while the range meter still showed 1.6 miles left.  And the check engine light came on.

I turned it off and let it sit for a couple of minutes, then started it back up again.  To my surprise, it moved.  So I limped it home at 20 something mph as that is all it would go.  Engine light was on all the way home.  Rolled into the driveway with 0.3 miles left on range meter and turned it off.  Temp on the dash had cooled down to 172F.

I went to plug it in and it would not charge.

Here are the ride stats:

Distance: 34.31 mi (died at 33 miles initially)
Time: 47:48
Avg Speed: 43.1 mph
Avg Air Temp: 87.8 °F
Max Speed: 71.0 mph
Battery Used: 97% (started with 97%)

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Are Diginow's Available?
« on: May 26, 2019, 07:43:55 PM »
Just saw someone mention on ZMOG that they paid for a Diginow setup in July 2018 and have not received it yet.

Are these chargers available or just a thing of the past?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Anyone Have a DSR + Power Tank?
« on: May 15, 2019, 06:25:40 AM »
As many probably know, I've got a FX and I like it a lot  but would like to go more miles than it will do.  I've test ridden a SRF, a DS and today, a DSR+Charge Tank. Out of those three, I really like the DSR, but to the lack of L2 charging my area, the charge tank is a bit of a waste for me. So I'm thinking I'd like to get a DSR + Power Tank to maximize my range.

Does any have this configuration out there?   14.4 battery in a DSR + a Power Tank.  What kind of range are you getting out of them at what speeds?
