Title: Smallest portable level 1 charger
Post by: fredx on April 03, 2021, 08:43:54 AM
Hey all,

I've got a 2020 SR/F that I dearly love, but I miss the convenience I had with my old 2013 FX of plugging into any random wall outlet anywhere I went.  So now I'm on the lookout for the smallest possible level 1 J1772 charger.  The ultimate would be just some little adapter with a J1772 plug on one side and a C13 socket on the other side, enabling the use of any regular appliance cord to charge the bike.  Has anyone heard of such a thing, or anything similar?

Thanks!

Yes, that exists.  It's just a socket, a plug, and a bit of wire, I think.

...I don't know where to buy one right now, though.

I think the Turbocord is on the smaller side of EVSEs.

So now I'm on the lookout for the smallest possible level 1 J1772 charger.
The charger is inside your bike. J-1772 is not a charger at all, it's just another AC outlet.

So I am assuming you're looking for a small 120 VAC granny cable.

You should be able to modify the one that came with the bike to be much shorter and smaller and then use an extension cord as I mentioned in my previous message.

I can charge my Zeros from just about anywhere I can find AC, regardless if 120 or 240 VAC. Tesla Destination, J1772, outlets of various types. Perhaps you want the same.

Here is an example of a weird outlet. (https://www.plugshare.com/location/94986) Click on the photo there of my bike and look at the very last photo.

While not extremely small, what about a Chevy Volt/Bolt OEM 110 volt charger?

Or maybe you can find a smaller level 1 charger.   This Fiat charger looks pretty small.

Wow look at all of those suggestions that are PHYSICALLY LARGER THAN THE TURBOCORD

Except for my modification.  BTW, do you mean this one (https://store.evsolutions.com/turbocord-dual-120240v-plug-in-ev-charger-p28.aspx)?

That does look pretty small but it still isn't comparable to the cable that the FX/FXS uses.  I think the OP is looking for a cable without any kind of intermediate control box.   Even the J1772 plug itself is quite large.

I wonder if anyone has found a way to install a simple C13/C14 socket on the SR/S or SR/F and wire it to the onboard charger (or half the onboard charger??)?

Turbocord certainly appears to be smaller than your modification, yes.

Look guys the chargers on the SR/F platform are set up to obey EVSE protocol. They only function when given the right signal via the resistors in the EVSE. And they're set up only to accept input from J1772 guns. So whatever cord you get has to have a J1772 gun on one side and some sort of comms box along the way. Again, the Turbocord is smaller than anything anyone else has linked for this purpose.

Prove me wrong.

I would have to see it to be sure. Looks like the cord is a bit long and the plug (granny box?)  is huge.  I would probably shorten the length  even on the Turbocord and then use extension cords for the desired length to meet the requirements for each trip.

But I am glad to see they are being made smaller. We need a motorcycle version.

That is literally the unit that H-D shoves under the seat of the LiveWire.

Couldn't the communications be small enough to fit in the J-plug, if you only wanted the one power level?

Doesn't the LW come with a cheaper 120VAC only version?

Thanks for all the replies and info, folks!  I never fail to be humbled by the knowledge offered by this forum.    ;D

Yes, the ultimate would be a C13 socket on the bike.  In the absence of that, a miniaturized J1772 gun with a C13 socket as its input would be fantastic.  In the meantime, the Turbocord appears to be the best option.  For nearly $500.  Ooof.

Thanks!

I think I would rather buy a new one than wait for this cable that might arrive from Romania.   Also, has the Volvo  XC60 T8 really been available for 2-1/2 years?  Auction seems a bit sketchy.

Yeah, I didn't notice all that. Also another $60.00 in shipping costs.

The previously mentioned turbo cord is the smallest commercially available EVSE cord I have seen.

The smallest EVSE cord that I have seen was a DIY thing that put an Open EVSE circuit board, LCD screen, and contactor inside a J 1772 plug. I can't find a link to that at the moment, maybe someone else remembers or can find it. Here is a link to Open EVSE. https://store.openevse.com/collections/all-products/components

For europeans, the by-far smallest L1 charging unit i've seen is Charge Amps Ray: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Charge-Amps-CA-100312-Charging-Cable-RAY-16A/193912134758
Pricing however is quite high..
