I've been interested in the ZEV scooters since before I bought my Zero FXS.
They seem to have a very small media foot print, I hardly ever see them being discussed despite their vehicles having impressive specs.

They recently launched a three wheeled tilting scooter, similar to the Piaggio Mp3.
http://newatlas.com/zev-lrc-t15-electric-tilting-three-wheeler/47432/

Specs:
Range of 125 miles at 55 mph
Range of 70 miles at 70 mph
    Top speed 80 mph
     Battery 12.5 KWh
      MSRP $13,990

Zev also have, what they claim to be, "The worlds longest range and fastest production electric scooter", the ZEV LRC-X.

Specs:
Range of 185 miles at 55 mph
Range of 100 miles at 70 mph
    Top speed 93 mph
    Battery 13 KWh
    MSRP $16000

Both scooters have a reverse button, which I really wish Zero had.

I'm feeling the range limitation a bit too much with the FXS which only has 6.5 kW/h.

Assume I'd be mounting it on the tail.

Can I either:
1. Run it in parallel with the 2 internal ones.
2. Add a switch that switches over to the spare battery without removing the 2 internal ones (disconnects them).
3. Charge the 2 batteries with the external one, while riding.

Is this possible without access to the firmware?

I need some help figuring out what happened and deciding what to do next.

First let me say, Oh. My. God.
That was terrifying.

I was accelerating hard to highway speeds when I suddenly got jerked forward hard and the bike slowed down rapidly.
Twisting the throttle did nothing but the lights and dash were still on.
I had to negotiate my way across several lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder all the while slowing down.
0/10 would not recommend.
I was sure my belt snapped but thinking back I would have expected to hear engine whine when turning the throttle.
However, the belt was fine.

After turning the switch on and off everything was back to normal. Except my top speed was severely reduced (just a hair above eco mode limit).
My SOC was a bit low at around 30-40% so that might be the reason for the limit later on though I'm not sure if this used to happen before.

Fun parts from the logs:
You can see that I was riding along and suddenly there are a bunch of SEVCON CAN EMCY Frame errors followed by me stopping and turning the switch on and off.
It actually looks the the sevcon turned off mid ride and when it turned back on there were even more errors.

The bike has been in the rain a few times but for the past 3 days before this incident there was no rain.
I've had a similar thing happen to me a few months back, sudden braking but no loss of throttle afterwards. No logs unfortunately.
Bike has been on the road for 10 months and 4300Km.

My washing machine, TV and dishwasher are plugged into surge protectors.
My PC is plugged into a UPS.

My Zero costs several times all of the above combined, should I be protecting it?
The FXS has a 650W charger which isn't a crazy high amount of current, I think a normal consumer grade protector should work with it.

Clearly there's no need for a UPS (no need for uptime) but is voltage regulation and surge protection necessary and/or helpful?
I expect several blackouts this winter (already had one) which will be accompanied by spikes and probably a few brownouts.

I have a Zero FXS.
I usually ride daily and charge the bike all night.
For the next 13 days I won't be riding.

I can think of three options:
1. This isn't a big deal. Keep it plugged in throughout the entire time and keep the bike covered (maybe throw an extra chain on it).
2. It would be better for the battery life to drop the charge to 60% for the 11 days and leave it unplugged.
3. Charge it to 100% and leave it unplugged because it might be a fire hazard.

Is there any reason not to go with option 1?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a place in London that has a belt tension gauge in stock or can order one within 3 weeks.
Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Any other tools I should get while I'm at it?

Thanks!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Zero FXS rear brake squeal (video)
« on: September 12, 2016, 11:01:30 PM »
I finally bought a rear stand so I can now share my rear brake squeal (5 sec. video). Notice the noise near the end when I apply the brakes.

It's been doing this since it was a couple of weeks old. 3000 km on it now.
Keep in mind that the squeal you hear in the video actually goes on for a few seconds until the bike comes to a stop (when not on a stand).

Regen is set to 0 for the demonstration.

P.S Extremely sorry for the vertical video, I was balancing on one leg, giving it throttle, keeping an eye on wheel speed and pressing down on the brake. Slipped my mind :(

First of all, I am super happy with my FXS for everything except for the range (I enjoy riding it so much that I'm exceeding my initial expected range).

I feel like we're missing out on a lot of the benefits of using a software controlled motorcycle.
Considering how expensive the bike is, especially the changes which are mostly software based could give a much more luxurious feel to the bike without too much additional cost.

1. Reverse
2. Adjustable regenerative braking (instead of instant full on) - also a form of combined braking with regenerative on rear and mechanical on front.
3. Customization (power curve, regenerative braking, profiles) could be much better
4. Brake lever for rear brake instead of foot brake (regenerative only?)
5. Security system (no start without bluetooth connection to phone or anything else)
6. Keyless start via phone
7. Valet\Garage mode
8. Cruise control
9. LED lamps with blink patterns for emergency braking.

Am I asking for too much or should I be asking for more?

Hi everyone,

I'm limited in my choices for belt tension gauges.
Will this one work on my FXS?
Any thoughts on it?

Hey everyone,

The manual just says "Use the adjustment wrench".
Which wrench do I need?
Where can I purchase it?

I tried with a universal adjustment tool but it wouldn't fit.
My dealer wants $400 for a tool kit.
Appreciate the help.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Ground strap on FXS is zip-tied

Hi everyone,

Is the ground strap on my FXS supposed to be zip tied to the chassis (see pic)?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Higher Speed Gearing Option FXS
« on: February 27, 2016, 06:26:43 PM »
Hi everyone,

I bought a new Zero FXS and have a question regarding the higher top speed gearing option.
On the forums here, I read that it's not expected to change battery life and range.
My question is, how much does the reduction in torque affect acceleration?
Maybe an actual 0-100km time for comparison?
