Automated vehicles vs motorcyclists
« on: July 30, 2017, 04:04:55 AM »

I thought this long article was pretty interesting and gives you something, perhaps unpleasant, to think about:

Other way round: would you like to be the passenger of an automated (electric) motorcycle?  :D

If the car does not detect a motorcycle, will it "see" a bicycle?

I have a friend that suggested that one solution to the automated vehicle hazard is just to go about 5 mph above the speed limit. Driver-less cars will undoubtedly stay at the speed limit, so this should protect motorcyclists as long as they're moving. Sounds like a plan.  ;)

I think we should all make sure any automated driving and mapping vehicles we see get a good taste of what *all* the vehicles on the road are.

I'm doing my part, making sure a silent dustbin-faired vehicle is part of their dataset.

If you are still interested in the subject and have time on your hands, here is an interesting, but long, blog regarding automated vehicles vs motorcycles, part 2:

and one discussing liability should a self-driving car cause an accident:

Came in close to a self-driving car again yesterday, this one a Bolt.  Told the bearded guy with the laptop "you'll get some good data today" after I filtered up, pulled in tight, and waited with them at the light.  When it went green, I made sure their sensors got some unusual-to-them data. : - )

I'm already way ahead of you (by 10-15 mph)  ;D
