Title: Dragrace between Zero SR and Panigale
Post by: kingcharles on April 28, 2015, 03:00:41 AM
A Dutch TV show compares the Zero SR to a Panigale as they are level on torque.

See for yourself what the result is

No surprise against a 1299 Panigale which produces almost as much torque, way more horsepower and weighs less than the Zero. The Ducati is a sub-ten second quarter mile bike. The baby Panigale would most likely outrun the Zero as well. The SR did get the jump on him but it didn't last long. However I was surprised that the Zero didn't beat the 300cc Kawasaki by more than it did.

Edit: it would have been nice to know what they were saying about the bikes. All I picked up was the guy on the Panigale describing the race as something like "bye bye Zero".

That was a good find.

Nice find kingcharles.

The race against the panigale starts at 3:30 and the Ninja 300 is at 5:30.

If anything this is a good illustration that torque alone means virtually nothing.

Probably because the relatively low HP of the SR meant that it hit its top speed around the same time the Ninja did so it could no longer keep opening up the gap.

Protomech is right, to be a top sports bike, you need torque AND horsepower. Without the horsepower, you simply cannot overcome air resistance at the higher speeds.

Both are pretty positive about the Zero. The guy on the Panigale raced with Lorenzo and Simocelli in the GP250 with a wildcard.
They say, it's all about torque and that's the big advantage of a Zero. They are impressed by the accelaration at the first meters. The Panigale didn't shift under 100 kph

As a daily commuter, the Zero has them both beat.

The low-end torque and lack of gears is important to being nimble at lower speeds (up to 70MPH)

The Energica Ego would be a more interesting one to compare to the Ducati on a comparison like this.  It's built to be more racing-oriented.
