Title: FX/S side racks
Post by: mattsb42 on January 06, 2019, 07:05:51 AM
Before pulling the trigger on the happy-trail side rack kit and figuring out what modifications are needed to make it work with the FXS, I figured it would be worth asking around to see if anyone has done this before.

Any success stories, either for off-the-shelf, modified, or custom-built? Anything I should watch out for?

It will not fix the FXS. The frames are entirely different and you’ll need to perform custom welding.

Furthermore, the tail does not have the strength as is to support it properly even with welding.

Now, I’m not saying it can’t be done, but the conventional recommendation is to use soft panniers, or maybe adapt a much lighter pannier support bracket set.

I have done this adaptation of soft and expandable saddle bags.

My last setup has stayed on the bike since last July.
It gives plenty of room, and a passenger can sit more comfortably than on the stock saddle.
The bags are still in perfect condition, but I avoid to park the bike too much in direct sunlight.
One drawback of this setup is that it is not waterproof.
