Alta Motorcycles / All New Alta Redshift MXR released today!
« on: February 01, 2018, 10:41:33 PM »
2018 Alta Motors Redshift MX-R
Lighter, Faster, and Less Expensive

The Future of Fast just got better! The latest offering from San Francisco based Alta Motors boasts an impressive ten horsepower increase and a boost of 27 ft-lbs of torque over the previous Redshift MX. Clearly, the new MX-R took advantage of those New Years Resolution Sales at Planet Fitness, shedding an impressive six pounds. These increase in power and reduction in weight fixes a target directly on the KTM and Husqvarna 350cc Motocross offerings. All of the improvements Alta Motors implemented for 2018 are sure to make the MX-R an impressive Motocross machine. But the question on the minds of many is will anyone be able to afford to race the Electric powerhouse?

Luckily for us, Alta Motors has been collecting feedback from motorcycle consumers, dealers, and press and developing a plan to address all of the concerns that consumers have with the new Platform. Fist on the list of concerns for many consumers is the price. No one can argue that a fifteen thousand dollar price tag was an insurmountable barrier to entry for the vast majority of riders! Especially when the competition is offering competitive, race worthy, bikes for under ten thousand dollars. Alta offered up the proverbial mic drop when they announced that the much improved 2018 Redshift MXR would retail for $11,999, a three thousand dollar price reduction over the original 2017 Redshift MX!

Another common concern for riders considering the jump from internal combustion motors to the all-electric Redshift is the ability keep enough charge on the bike to complete the days worth of practices, qualifying races, and motos. Alta took a two-part approach to this hurdle. First, the new battery chemistry and beefed up electronics allow the Redshift to handle the taxing power draw and extreme charging requirements that motocross demands of the electric bike without generating as much heat. Riders familiar with the original Redshift MX know all about heat limiting and increased charge times after sustained wide-open efforts on loamy motocross tracks. The Redshift MXR virtually eliminates heat-related issues that plagued the previous Redshift MX. Part two of Alta's plan was developing a rapid charger that reduces the overall charge time by 30 minutes! Alta's rapid charger will retail for $799 and allow the bike to go from depleted to full charge in a staggering 1.5 hours.

Alta Motors is committed to producing bikes that are competitive out of the crate, this means including top-shelf components. Unfortunately for the 2017 MX, the 4CS has developed a not so favorable reputation in the motorcycle community. Alta addressed this with a fully updated suspension package that includes the latest AER 48 forks from WP. The new suspension package will offer competitive riders a much-improved package that is laser-focused on motocross competition.

The 2018 Alta Motors Redshift MX-R is stacking up to be a solid offering at a price that puts it within reach of racers across the country. The latest offering is proof positive that Alta Motors is listening to customers and dedicated to providing the best motorcycle on the market. The 2018, Made in the USA, Alta Redshift MX-R is sure to turn some heads and change hearts at motocross tracks across the country this year!

Runtime:
Expert Motocross:
The MXR matches it’s ICE competitors on a moto track. An expert in Maps 3 and 4 will be able to complete a 25+ minute moto. Map 4 provides an exciting “overclocked” experience, but run times will be reduced by about 50%

Intermediate Motocross:
An intermediate level motocross racer, utilizing maps 2 and 3, can expect about 60 minutes of continuous use depending on track size, speed, and ambient conditions.

Expert Singletrack and Woods:
For riders considering more aggressive riding in the mountains on challenging singletrack or goat trails where average speeds are low, the Redshift MXR should provide 4+ hours of range using Maps 1 and 2.

Performance Throttle Maps:
ECO (Map 1): A traction map that offers the best range profile. Also an excellent map for just starting out.

SPORT (Map 2): Performance profile engineered to line up with 250f race machinery.

PERFORMANCE (Map 3): Similar traits as the Sport map but with more bottom end and traction, it also makes a great starting gate map

OVERCLOCKED (Map 4): Maximum torque and power are available without restriction if you have the skill to control it. Thermal limiting will protect the machine if you push too hard.

Alta Motorcycles / Agressive Pricing on Alta Redshift Models
« on: January 17, 2018, 11:26:30 PM »
Hey Everyone,

I received a new price sheet from Alta and wanted to give you a quick update. The Redshift has proven to be a very competitive model in 2017. But, the major factor holding many consumers back is the price. Alta has adopted a very aggressive pricing structure In an effort to put the Electric platform within reach of more riders....

So, without further ado:

2018 Alta MX $10,495 (reduced from $14,995)
2018 Alta EX $12,995 (reduced from $15,495)
2018 Alta SM $13,495 (reduced from $15,495)

All offroad models (EX and MX) will require a charger, you will two options for this:

Base (currently shipping with the Alta MX and EX) $499
Upgraded (will have some additional features) $799

All SM models will continue to feature onboard charging and do not require a separate charger purchase.

Alta has also given some incentives for 2017 models as well (these prices may vary depending on dealer) here is what we have available:

2017 Alta Redshift MX (Demo with 66 hours) $8,900 (includes charger)
2017 Alta Redshift MX (brand new) $9,900 (includes charger)

To give you an idea of how competitive these prices are, the 2018 KTM Freeride E-XC will likely retail for over $13K! The Alta Redshift, in almost every way, is a superior motorcycle for a lot less money!

I will do my best to keep you updated on any changes for 2018 as soon as they become available. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the Redshift lineup or would like to schedule a private demo.

Check out the Alta Motors Redshift MX at the ISDE Sprint Enduro Qualifier at Washougal in Washington.

The Redshift is holding its own against ICE bikes and, as is the case with the muddy conditions in this race, proving to have better power delivery!

Jason finished 15th overall and 1st in the 30+ class which is very impressive.

After a few months testing the Alta Motors Redshift MX and running demos with customers here is what I have found:

Average run time during demo runs at the local MX track: 1-2 hours (faster riders will use the battery up quicker than beginner to intermediate riders)
Average run time trail riding (fast rider on technical trails): 2+ hours with more testing coming this summer
Charging time: 4-4.5 hours using the 110v outlet in the shop / 2-2.5 using the 220v generator at the track. The best practice is to plug the Alta into the generator anytime it is sitting still, doing so will allow you to extend your day significantly. We are using a lifan 4250 Platinum generator which is about the bare minimum for the Redshift. Ours required a high altitude jet kit and some airbox mods for charging at 4500-5000 ft.

Maps: Alta has done a great job of making the throttle feel smooth and responsive on the Redshift MX. the Redshift is very easy to ride and feels much like a traditional gas bike once you have wrapped your head around not shifting and using a clutch.

Map 1 - very smooth and easy to use. This map limits wheel spin and will keep the front end on the ground (for the most part). I tend to use this map when riding in tight corners or super dry/dusty conditions where traction is a premium.

Map 2 - This is noticeably more responsive allowing the rider to loft the front wheel over logs, rocks, and other obstacles. Map 2 is likely to be the goto map for those who intend to trail ride the Redshift MX.

Map 3 - This is where most Motocross racers will want to ride the Redshift MX. The power delivery is great for the faster MX tracks and should be the ticket for most riders.

Map 4 - Map 4 doesn't feel a whole lot different from map 3 but does offer up a bit more power. The fastest MX racers might want to run map 4 on the faster tracks.

Suspension: The WP suspension on the Alta Redshift MX comes valved very soft. This would be a great setup for a beginner MX racer or someone who intends to trail ride the Redshift MX. Intermediate to expert MX racers will want to invest in suspension services to make the Alta more competitive on the track.

Power: Alta is marketing the Redshift MX at the 250f market. In use, we found that the torque that the Redshift MX delivers makes it feel like a much bigger bike (think 350f KTM). Everyone that rides the Alta is blown away by the amount of power that the bike has.

Handling: The lack of rotating mass make the Redshift MX feel much more nimble than the 251lbs that are on the spec sheet. The bike is quite nimble and feels more like a lightweight and nimble two-stroke motorcycle.

That is our early test of the Alta Redshift MX. We plan to do more testing and more demos throughout the summer and will keep you posted. If you are interested in riding the Alta feel free to contact us. We are happy to schedule a demo ride and let you test the bike out for yourself.
