Buy Sell Trade / Re: '13 Brammo Empulse R, $3,000

Bump.

I’ve gotten some interest from far away, but nothing that would cost me more in time to ship than I’d get back in payment.

Buy Sell Trade / '13 Brammo Empulse R, $3,000 (sold)

21,468 miles. Single owner. Title in hand.

Does not charge. I am pretty sure it is just the well-known wiring harness issue as it happened after I got a new job and started level II charging at work, but I tried hard-wiring around the offending harness and it still would not charge. Could be that I'm not a mechanic and the bike doesn't like my bodged fix, or it could be something else is more broken. None of the local shops will touch it. I replaced it with a Zero and now I just want the space in my garage back.

It stopped charging in April 2018, and the bike has been sitting ever since. I limped it home from work, and parked it with ~25% SOC. It does turn on. I am confident it would move if you wanted to ride it. That said, it shows 0% SOC, and the battery is likely far out of balance.

Front tire has very few miles, as do the chain and sprockets. I have a second set of new, never installed, sprockets that will go with the bike. One of the fairing bolts is cross-threaded in the frame, and one of the front turn signals has a broken outer lens (from me being careless in the garage). I did tip it over once in a parking lot when I lost my footing getting on, otherwise it has never been down. The front fender has holes where I had extra LED lights mounted (they have been transferred to the Zero). Also has heated grips installed.

I bought the bike to ride, and I did in almost all weather conditions for ~10 mo/year in Chicagoland. It's dirty and well loved. I am disappointed I didn't get more use out of it.

Local pickup only. The bike is somewhat taken apart, and I assume anyone interested would prefer it that way for inspection, etc.

I'm not on the forum very often. E-mail is best:

My Kill-a-watt caught fire while I had my bike plugged into it. Reading around the EV forums, that isn't uncommon when drawing high current for extended periods of time. I would not recommend any long term or consistent use with it.

The Senior TT, which was shortened to 4 laps this year,

The electrics are about the speed now of the lightweights, that is the non-race prepped 650cc bikes. Which is pretty good. Its expected in the next couple of years that they'll start to catch up with the Superstocks, and then you might start people paying more attention to the Zero Challange.

FWIW, the lightweights are most certainly race prepped to the gills, which is why they had so many mechanical failures. They're putting out almost twice as much horse power as my old SV650, and more power than a stock 600cc four. The EV's are definitely in good company where they finished this year.

Had the same thing happen to my Empulse when it was new, after riding in the rain. Ended up being a leaky connector near the ignition. Some gaffer tape around the connectors and dielectric grease fixed the problem.

I know it's great for me as an Empulse owner, but I was really hoping for Brammo to lead the way rather than get sucked into a bureaucracy. It'll be interesting to see where this goes.

FWIW, I turn my parking lights on about an hour before I go home from work, and I end up with between 5% and 10% less SOC on my Brammo than what it had when I parked it in the morning. I only do this when it below 50 f because turning the parking lights on also turn on the heating elements between the cells. I also assume the BMS lowers the SOC readout thanks to the drop in voltage from the cold-soaked cells. So there's likely more than just the light drawing power when your parking light is on.

If I don't turn on the lights to warm up the battery, I have trouble getting up to highway speeds, and the bike throws lots of errors - and it's worse the colder it gets. I ride down to 10 f, but as long as I warm it up, there's no problem.

General Discussion / Re: Successful Zero Dealership, what does it take?

If the question is what kind of expertise is needed to repair the bikes, an EE is probably not the most appropriate. If anything breaks in the electrical system, the fix is almost always to replace the part that broke, not repair. The real specialized expertise is being able to hook up the diagnostic computer to figure out which part broke. I don't think an engineering degree is needed, but someone who is computer savvy probably is.

Now if someone wants to design new parts, like added chargers or beefier motors or controllers, then an EE and software engineer would be very helpful. But that's not something anyone is really asking for right now, other than the crazys collecting iron butt medals. I doubt anyone is making money off of those mods. The service requirements for these bikes require far less expertise than a typical ICE since most of the repairs are plug an play. But there is still specific expertise needed. Until the bikes start selling at a level that will necessitate repeat repairs, that expertise is not going to be developed or retained. I know when my Brammo has been worked on, the techs have always has to call Brammo HQ at some point in the service and Brammo HQ was able to verify the updates were installed correctly via the web. And I am not faulting the techs at all in those cases and appreciate the diligence provided.

Good topic!

If I were to ever leave my current job, I would probably look at doing the e-dealership thing. I've been thinking about this a lot lately...

I think it's important to note the difference between a dealership that customers like, and one that can stay in business. If I were to do something right now, I'd be focusing mostly on fleet sales - private security and police forces. I wouldn't be afraid of selling to a consumer, but I can't see how the economics makes sense focusing on consumers now. There is only one other electric bike I know of within 300 miles of me. That is not a market that can sustain a business! The question for me is when does the tide switch, and who is going to still be making bikes when it does? And when will the current ICE manufactures figure it out and will they be able to convert their existing dealers? (That might not matter because it seems all the local ICE dealers are also going out of business...)

Harlen has a lot of advantages being in LA. I don't think his model works many other places right now. There just isn't enough demand for two Hollywoods. Being an EE is great for the first adopters, and for creating any custom accessory add-ons, but that advantage isn't going to last long. Then he'll just be relying on the brand he's developed and customer service like any other retail outlet. That'll be good for years to come, it sounds like. :) I'd be lieing if I didn't say I was jealous.

FWIW, I wasn't on any list when I got to Milwaukee, but still got to ride about 4 hours after I arrived by putting my name on the waiting list. It worked out because it gave me enough time to leave and get a charge. I would expect smaller turnouts going forward, too.

FYI, according to Ted Dillard, LiveWire demo rides are invite only. Might shoot Ted an email to see if he can get you on the list.

I'm trying to work it through the dealer I bought my Brammo through (Suburban Harley). They are a large HD dealer in the Milwaukee area. Unfortunately they are doing their demos on Thursday, but I can't make it until Sunday.

Harley LiveWire Forum / Ride Up to Milwaukee Demo 6/29 From Chicago
« on: June 24, 2014, 08:22:11 AM »
My first post, so hopefully some interest. I plan on riding my Empulse up to the HD Museum on Sunday for their LiveWire Demo. I'll be leaving from Wheaton, IL, stopping for breakfast and a charge at Gurnee Mills, then up to Milwaukee. I'm hoping to grab a charge at the museum, but if not I will be finding a L2 somewhere in Milwaukee before heading back following the same route. This will be a 200 mile day for me, so I will be hypermiling the whole way. If you're interested in meeting up, shoot me a PM and I'll provide my cell phone number.

Cheers  :D
