Parking Brake Tassle
« on: August 26, 2017, 08:11:16 PM »

Well actually it's just a single string so it might not count as a full blown tassle.

I was a bit dismayed when I discovered that my lovingly used 2016 Zero DSR had no way to prevent movement whilst parked on an incline.

I set about fastening a makeshift front brake manual lock consisting of a 3/8" copper tube coupling zip tied to the master cylinder.
I found a rollerball pen barrel that nicely fit inside the coupling & also fit behind the hand lever once squeezed to keep pressure on the master cylinder thus creating a hand brake.
The pin barrel was then replaced with a smart device stylist so I could use my phone (responsibly while parked) with my gloves on.

This arrangement worked well until I put hand guards on at which time I lost the clearance required for the stylist so I went without a parking brake until a few days ago when I realized all I needed was to tie a string around the end of the handle bar/hand guard area with a loop on the other end that fits around the hand lever.

Squeeze the hand lever then slip the string over its end & the front brake master cylinder retains pressure.

This works for my needs but may not for everyone else.
Use with caution & at your own risk.
The string doesn't interfere with the throttle & is not very noticeable after I tinted it black.

Richard220 have me a piece of Velcro at Alice's one time. Worked like a charm. The kind that's used to tie plants to their stakes.

I have a velco strap I bought from lowes.

I THINK this is the one.  https://www.lowes.com/pd/VELCRO-1-in-Black-Strap-Fastener/1085819

It has a plastic loop on one side, so it can wrap around to itself.  the ring makes pulling it tight to apply the brake very easy.
Tug the end and it opens to slide off.  fits in your pocket or in the tank bag easily when you get back on.

Zero now lists a new parking brake accessory that uses a paddle to directly lock an add-on caliper to the rear disc. The 2017 owner's manual references it as well:

I use the one that holds the front hand brake in, sold by Zero for ten bucks. It does the job. I usually keep it in my jacket pocket so I can easily connect it up when needed on a steep hill. I don't have to get off the bike to use it.

There are also a lot of front brake locks sold on the web, including E-Bay. Some even have a key so it cannot be removed and the bike cannot be rolled.

I'm not sure why you replied to my post, but I'll give it the reply it deserves:

I own that front lock, and it doesn't work for me. Every parking surface is an incline where I live, including the front of my house.

I wish the nice option just released were less expensive, but it hopefully covers labor for installation.

I'd love to see Zero offer left-hand brake lever as a standard option.

I installed the aftermarket one and it makes such a huge differnce
being able to put right foot on the ground when maneuvering and
being able to stop the bike from rolling with the non-throttle hand.

I have the same problem in front of my Auburn house but the ten buck front brake  lock works very well for me on my 2017 SR.

Any details on the "aftermarket one" - vendor etc. ? Is this a real left-hand brake (continuously variable pressure, rather than just a lock) ? Zero told me they can't offer such a thing themselves due to "regulatory requirements".

Yes, I prefer flexibility in foot placement, so I prefer to control the brakes with my hands.

I imagine that it's not impossible but that as a vehicle manufacturer they have to deal with
