Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Tyres for lower speed riding
« on: April 02, 2016, 11:45:27 PM »
I tried some spirited riding on the IRC's  (2014 SR) today, now that the weather is improving, and felt like i was about to die at every turn so its definitely time for some new tyre that isnt shaped like a car tyre.

I live on a small island, 9 miles by 5 miles, so I need a tyre that heats up fast because most runs are 6 miles or less each way.  It's also a lot of hard acceleration and tight winding corners so I am more concerned with grip than tyre life (generally I get double the range from a tyre than someone on the mainland because there is no highway riding) but I commute year round so it needs to be safe in the wet.  On my KTM I actually ran a road legal race wet on the front and an intermediate rear and that was perfect, incredibly confidence inspiring.  However the SR is too heavy for those and they don't come in the right sizes.

I see that I can get a ContiAttack SM in the right size so I wonder if they would work or if the SR is again too heavy.  It's worth pointing out that i weigh 60kg with my riding gear on so as a package its probably still quite light.  Or do i stick with the tried and tested DR II?

Thanks!

So my new 2014 SR has done less than 300 miles and I had an issue a couple of times with no regen at all in any mode, even when down to 84% SOC but a couple of reboots sorted it so I wasn't concerned but sent the logs to Zero as a precaution.  However last night, I switched the bike on and it was at 100% but hadn't been charged since the night before.  When I turned the bike on the charger light was illuminated and it showed a countdown of 0'00" above the battery icon.  A couple of reboots again sorted it out.

I set off to my ham radio station the other side of the island and in the last couple of miles the Error light was blinking so I switched the dash to see and it showed error 0015. A couple of hours later I went to leave and the green charging light was flashing rapidly, even with the bike off.  I turned it on and it continued flashing and wouldn't move.  After about 15 minutes of reboots and waiting I tried switching the dash to see if there was anything out of the ordinary and checked my phone with the app but it all seemed fine.  After changing the dash the charge light stopped and after 30 seconds or so, the run light came on and I set off home.   The bike ran perfectly all the way home except the error light blinked, approx twice  a second unless I was using regen braking, when it turned off.

Now I'm kinda worried I will end up stranded in the middle of nowhere as I go to the radio station regularly and its very remote.  I will contact my dealer but wondered if this is a known issue?  Perhaps having the dash showing the error codes put the bike into a debug mode or something?

Heres the dump of the log file, thanks to Kim's script.  It keeps saying enabling and disabling Charger 2 and Charger 3 which is odd and I have also never seen "Battery module 191 contactor closed" before.

General Discussion / Winter Commuting
« on: October 12, 2015, 03:17:25 PM »
This is a bit of a wishy washy topic but I'm after tips and experiences of those that commute by Zero or other bike. I used to commute daily year round but I have been using the car for the past 18 months and will have to return to pure biking in January due to another office move.

This morning it took 10 minutes to leave by the time I had put on overtrousers, boots, coat, leather jacket, backpack,  neck thingy, helmet and gloves plus removing and putting away the bike cover. Unless the traffic is particularly bad it's actually quicker in the car.

How do you guys cope? I was thinking of streamlining by getting a warm touring jacket with goretex or similar so I can just leave a coat at work and ditch the neck thingy. I have a top box now so don't have to find somewhere to store my helmet. Storing gear in the office will also be a problem as i'm going from having my own office to hot desking with a small locker.

Has anyone found waterproof pants that can be stepped out of whilst wearing boots?

Any wisdom greatly appreciated!

This will upset some petrol heads and wake up the world to the benefits of electric drivetrains for sure.

Ok so it's small scale and expensive but it's interesting to see a practical demonstration.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / My motor has eaten itself.
« on: March 15, 2014, 03:13:05 AM »
Sad news. The past couple of days my 2012 S ZF9 has been making some unpleasant clunking noises and i was feeling a light kicking through the pegs with each noise..  It continued to get worse until on the way home today it was making the most horrendous sounds I have ever heard from a machine.  Going on my basic troubleshooting skills it seems the main motor bearing has collapsed.  As it did for Terry on his cross country attempt.  Amazingly though the bike got me home, albeit as a lower speed than usual (but not dangerously slow, it kept up with traffic i just limited acceleration as high torque seemed to cause the worst noises).

I'm sure I will get a new motor under warranty but with my dealer away for the week it couldn't have come at a worse time.  The Zero is my only transport so I guess I will have to hire a car or something at great expense.

Although I've had a couple of problems, a busted throttle pot being the first, the bike has always got me home.  It seems to struggle on until it finally gives up on my driveway or as it limps into the garage.  I can't say I have ever felt sorry for a bike before until now!  With ICE's that have broken down, usually in the middle of a dual carriageway, I have wanted to give them a good kicking.  The Zero seems more in need of a hug.  I hope it can be fixed quickly as I miss riding it already.

P.s. Mileage is 7500 miles.  I ride in all weather every day which probably doesn't help.

General Discussion / What do you do? (In and out of work)
« on: December 17, 2013, 04:46:55 AM »
This is somewhat off-topic but I was wondering if Zero/EV owners tend to be more technically orientated than general motorists.  The posting on this forum would suggest they are.  So, what do you do when you aren't riding your Zero?

I'm currently working in the local hospital but previously I qualified as a sound technician, mostly outside broadcast related and I now do field recording as a hobby.  However the vast majority of my spare time is occupied with Amateur Radio so I'm going to put myself in the 'Technically Minded' category.

What about the rest of you?

General Discussion / Aero and Marginal Gains
« on: October 22, 2013, 03:33:23 AM »
Looking at Terry's bike has got me thinking.  Aerodynamics obviously play a critical role in range on a motorcycle but most of us don't want to be riding a fully faired Vetter bike.

I'm a keen cyclist and spend a lot of time and money making my bike lighter and friends think i'm mad paying big bucks for something like a saddle that is only 100 grams lighter, but add that to the pedals, brakes, chain and wheels etc. and before you know it you are saving kilograms.   Applying this theory to aerodynamics could we make a meaningful difference to range by making small changes to the bike?

Hopefully ReverseTrike will chip in some expert opinion but I'm thinking things like filling in gaps at the front between battery box and fairings, filling in the frame tubes, providing something to improve airflow over the riders legs and so on.  My understanding is that aircraft-like shapes aren't all that great on a bike because you are riding in turbulent air and actually 'tripping' the air with winglets and the like can improve aerodynamics significantly.

Unfortunately I can't test my theories because the longest reasonably straight road here is just over 2 miles long!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Fitting heated grips
« on: October 10, 2013, 03:24:16 PM »
I tried to get the Zero heated grips last year but they were out of stock.  I will probably just buy a set from the local shop instead ready for this winter but I wanted to find out how to connect them up.

They usually come with rings on the cable ends but as there is no 12V battery I wonder how to do it?  I have the 12V accessory socket but I don't really want a large cigarette lighter plug sticking out all the time.  When you go to buy the Zero grips it says the 12V accessory kit is required so I imagine there is a spare connector somewhere under the tank?   The weather has been to poor lately I havent been able to take the cover off to have a look.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Loud rattling
« on: October 05, 2013, 09:17:15 PM »
I dropped the bike a few months ago and after a while something started rattling as I go over bumps/road imperfections.  Over time it's got worse but I have gone over the bike shaking all the bits I can get too and can't find anything that is loose.   It doesn't sound like bits of fairing rubbing together or anything, more like something reasonably heavy clattering around.

Im thinking it's towards the rear of the bike quite low down but i'm lost for ideas now.  Any guesses would be appreciated!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / Onboard Charging Options
« on: September 14, 2013, 12:10:07 AM »
I am considering doing a short trip to mainland UK perhaps next year on the S ZF9.  I would have to do 150 miles at reasonable speed on the first day for the trip to work so wondering what the options are for extra chargers.  Luggage isnt a major concern as I can carry enough clothing in a large backpack and a tank or rear bag or something.

IIRC Terry started off by having extra DeltaQ's screwed to the side of the battery box?  This could be a good option as I could probably just buy one and borrow a second.  Ideally a 2 hour recharge would be nice (I can DIY my own J1772 adaptor) which would mean at least 4 DeltaQ's.

What are the options?  Rumour has it that an Elcon 2500 will mount in the original charger location with some slight modification.  I'm not much of a fabricator but i'd be OK with basic metalwork.  What is the cost like for these?   I'm tempted to get some luggage for general commuting duties and if the Givi wingracks aren't too pricey over here that could be one potential option for mounting DeltaQ's or something larger.

It would be good to have a collection of links or articles on the various methods of carrying chargers for future reference.

General Discussion / Renault's Chameleon Charger
« on: August 23, 2013, 03:47:32 AM »
I have booked a test drive this weekend in the new Renault Zoe so I have been doing a bit of research on it, and the most intriguing thing is the onboard charger which will do anything from 3KW Type II all the way to 400V 3 Phase at 43KW.  I know we discussed this before and it was thought that they were using someone elses technology that uses the windings in the motor as a transformer to step down to battery voltage.  But after some googling I have come across Renault's patent for their charger and this doesn't seem to be the case.

https://www.google.com/patents/US20120286740?dq=Renault+charger&hl=en&sa=X&ei=w4MWUsLgL5SihgesvoDYAw&ved=0CEIQ6AEwAg

It looks as if they use the inverter in the controller as a rectifier and the windings in the motor are just used to provide inductance for smoothing the AC.   In this case how are they stepping the voltage down? Apparently the onboard charger will automatically adjust its current draw depending on the power source available but I can't find any information on how its done.  Perhaps it gradually increases the load and looks for voltage droop?

General Discussion / Electric Cars 1st and 2nd in Formula Student

http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1085541_electric-race-car-victorious-in-student-motorsport-event

This article is especially interesting due to the comment from the event chairman at the end. ' "We are delighted by this progress but we will have to see what needs to be done in the future to ensure petrol cars remain competitive," said Formula Student Chairman, Jon Hilton.'   So electric cars beat them at their own game, so they will just have to change the rules so it can't happen again.   Im very tempted to contact the guy and find out how they justify that stance.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / 1/4 Mile
« on: June 10, 2013, 02:15:08 AM »
Its come up for discussion a few times about acceleration so just a quick post.  We've had a 3 day motoring festival here in Jersey this weekend and the Friday night is 1/4 mile sprints on a closed off dual carriageway, so not a full drag strip, for vintage bikes and cars.  The local dealer ran a '13 S ZF8.5 as an exhibition run along with a Tesla Roadster.  The Zero did it in 13.65 seconds (@85mph iirc) and the Tesla was 1/10th slower.  It was the 3rd fastest time of the night and was running against 80's 1000cc+ sports bikes etc. and even some old Formula 1 cars so did pretty well.  It is also did well in the hill climb.

My feelings towards 0-60mph times etc. with the Zero is that litre sportsbike riders can chat all they like about how it can do it in 2.8 seconds or whatever but in reality, on the Zero you just twist the throttle and get a perfect start.  With an ICE bike unless you are a professional drag racer you will never get the revs, clutch and gear changes perfect enough to get anywhere close to the factory specified times.
