Title: BMS led codes
Post by: zerotracer on October 13, 2013, 10:23:21 PM
When my Zero s 2013 charges, the 4 leds at the BMS unit light up from empty to full.
And when the battery is fully charged all the leds blinks every 5. second as they must. But then the "balancing code" is lighting up occasionally.
Also if the charger has been pluged in more than 72 hours.

When you take it off the charger the last green led is blinking as it must do, but then it turns off after 5-10 minutes.
On my 2012 the last green led is blinking all the time 24/7 when it is off the charger.

Is there someting wrong with my 2013 model or is it just diffrent from the 2012 model ?

The 2013 model is definitely different from the 2012 model. That sounds normal to me, although it's been months since I studied the BMS lights carefully. The controller will rebalance the cells while it's plugged in. I'm not sure what periodicity that has, though. I checked the manual (you should, too) and that does not seem abnormal, although it doesn't say specifically what it should do.

I also think that the right way the bike is charging the battery is to "charge" then "maintenance and stabilization" of the battery cells.

It would be fun to hear about other peoples 2013 models also doing the same as my bike.
In the moment my bike has been on the charger for about 30-40 hours and the "stabilization" code is almost continuously flashing.

In the start I only saw the stabilization code for about every 20th. time the four LEDs was flashing, but now it´s 2 times "four LED" and then "stabilization"
Then "four LED" 2 times and then the "stabilization" (blinks for about 1 minute) - the same again and again .........

One informative bit is to check the smartphone app if you can to see what the maximum difference in cell voltage is. It should be a few millivolts or less, which would indicate that the balancing is doing its job. Also, if you're still in the new phase with the bike, the BMS is probably doing extra work to condition the battery so it lasts a long time. I found that it was a lot more active in the first several hundred miles. I'm now closer to 5,000 miles on the bike and the BMS etc. lights are very stable.

I just checked my 2013 S which I rode a couple of miles and hadn't plugged back in yet. There are no codes...blank. Only when I plugged it in did I get the one red and 3 green (in this case)lights along with the slow blinking green light on the dashboard.

Yes "dkw12002" it sounds like a normal "on charge" the thing your bike is doing.

In the bikes "72 hours on the charger" for the first time (800km.) I can tell things is happening.
But I also think as BRianTRice is writing, the BMS is working to get the battery in shape so it will get a long lifetime, but I have never seen the 2012 model
work as this on the battery and never seen the "stabilization code" on the 2012.
My 12 is also generally a stable machine :)
