Flux Moped Test Drive
« on: October 04, 2014, 10:14:00 PM »

On my often varied route to work I drove past and electric moped shop in Madison WI. (yes to my surprise)

http://www.fluxmopeds.com/

I stopped in one day after work, talked and took a test drive.

While this review is better and more factual than I could have been:

http://300mpg.org/2014/08/18/electric-scooter-review-2014-flux-mopeds-em1-electric-scooter/

I took a test drive too and it was as moped like as anything could be.
No need to manually push off the line - like i see some mopeds doing around town.
QUIET (that is quiet compared to a Zero) hub motor without gearing.
Top speed limited by controller to qualify as a moped it is more useful within the power band than something "topping out" at 30mph.
I lifted the battery - easy to manage size and balance.  (it charges outside of moped but you can carry the charger).
The "Limp Mode" is manually selected under the seat when "reserve" is reached for that extra mile home.

Anybody already in town has got to seriously consider one of these.
With "in town" range and usage these fit the moped niche without a price premium.

Nashville has a pretty large scooter population, particularly around the universities and downtown. Most appear to be 50-125cc scooters. Something like this looks like a great alternative: cleaner, quieter, and easier to use. Hopefully the durability is good.

Weight is 138 + 22 pounds per battery pack - (up to two) 160 - 182 pounds.

Capacity is 300# (I do not know which battery configuration that is).

To me - "yes" (weather equalized for driving conditions across all mopeds) this would be equally good on a St Paul campus.

As far as the battery preservation in the cold. I asked and the BMS does not keep it warm.
Because the battery is removed for charging - the operator removes the battery so it is not left out in the cold.
Yes, a little more to carry into class - but it'd make a kick ass cell phone/laptop recharger.

$700 or $900 for battery - depending on model. I've been wracking my head on the "battery cost per mile" formula. Which is upward of $0.05.
If classifying battery replacement with depreciation or maintenance it resumes eclipsing ICE because battery life roughly matches ICE moped pre-overhaul lifespan.
