Home Brew / Sacrificing 2013 Zero S 12.5 KWH for golfcart converrsion.
« on: September 17, 2023, 08:28:00 AM »
Does anyone here have experience with golf carts?

If I can't get a decent price for my 2013 Zero S, I want to put in drivetrain parts to a golfcart to make it really fly.  Most golfcarts are 25-35 MPH, but with the zero motor, controller, and battery I can only imagine how it could fly down the road.

Yes, I know the other systems would need significant upgrades as well if I wanted that kind of performance.  Suspension, brakes...etc.

But is it reasonably feasible?

Who built your cart for you?
EZ-go or another brand?

Aaron

I don't have a cart yet.  Need to free up garage space for it.  I'm looking at Icon carts.  But I've also considered getting a cheap used cart and trying to put my Zero motor, controller, and battery in it.

That's a project that will stretch my abilities with quite a risky budget; but the end result could be amazing.

Hey,
what's your mileage? Sorry if I overlooked, but I couldn't find it.
Also, where did you get the high torque spool and belt from?

Best regards
DerKrawallkeks

13,000 miles.
The high torque spool and belt were from zero.  I'm guessing they aren't available from them anymore if that's why you're asking.

An update on some of my other attempts;
Ikon (Black & Gold) - Didn't fit, but they may have updated the design.
Wilbers (Black & Silver)- They sent me a shock that was 279mm long instead of 260.
Re-visit the TDPRO 260mm https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0DE754/ (Red).  I took the grinder to this, and now it fits!  Unfortunately I dug it out of my garage with Hydraulic fluid all over it, and now I need to refill it to the proper level (unknown) with the appropriate fluid.

A 3.5 amp fuse? What fuse is that?

Its a a glass fuse under the seat and on the left side of the battery on a silver box.

I can't find much on what it does.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.
I fixed it!

Step 1: Reset the BMS buttons.
Step 2: Test the fuse (not conductive)
Step 3: Replace the fuse https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/0001.2509/486-1773-ND/639709

I have no idea why it died.  Maybe I'll get the logs soon.

See here.

Thanks; that partially fixed it.  Now the BMS is blinking LED 4 green every 2 seconds.
Nothing else works, but maybe its a bad fuse.

I ordered a new fuse.  ...Keeping my fingers crossed...

Do you have the latest firmware? Zero told me they had a bug with hibernate where the bike would get stuck off. I'd try pressing the two reset buttons on the BMS for 5 second each, and see if you see any LEDs on the BMS board. If not, then your BMS is dead or hibernating. Unfortunately, if that doesn't fix it, a trip to the dealer to remove and reseat the BMS may be required. Or it may come out of it sometime soon.

Supposed to be much less likely to occur on the latest firmware though,

No, I'm not on the latest firmware.  It hasn't been worth wasting a day's worth of traveling to get it updated.  Where are the reset buttons on the BMS you're referring to?

Bad ignition switch?

I doubt it.  It's probably only been flipped a dozen times in its life time.  Also the BMS should still indicate something.

I was taking a weekend ride on my 2013 Zero S and stopped for groceries, when I got back to the zero, it wouldn't start up.

Luckily I was just under 2 miles away from home, so I walked it home.

I got home, plugged it in (it should have been about 45% battery).  Nothing happened.
I checked the BMS LEDs, nothing on any of them.
I popped out the glass fuse from the top of the bms, waited ~30 seconds, then put it back in - no difference.

Any tips on how to further troubleshoot?

The fastace BFA01AR you linked to has a 1200lb spring.  That'll stiffen up the ride quite a bit from stock (if my understanding of the ratings is correct).  If you ride with loaded saddle bags and a passenger it might be something you want.   I went from a variable spring 550 ~ 805 lbs/in to a 980lb spring.  Not sure how much of a difference a 1200lb would be.
