Title: FW Version 44
Post by: DonTom on April 21, 2024, 11:15:45 AM
I bet that woke you all up! But no, it doesn't exist--yet.

But I am wondering if there will be a new version of FW to make our Energicas compatible with Teslas V3 & V4 Superchargers that do NOT have Magic Dock.

I know that Fords and Rivians can now use the V3 & v4 (250 kw) Superchargers, not sure about Chevy. I realize the vehicles need to first get an update to make them compatible with the V3 and V4 Tesla Superchargers.  The Fords and Rivians will NOT work without the update, except for those few with the Magic Dock.

I already have a couple of Tesla SC to CCS adapters.  They do not work, which makes me wonder what the difference is between the Telsa SCs with and without the Magic Dock.

Anyway, I do realize we would need a FW update to use the non-Magic Dock V3 & V4 Tesla Superchargers. Will it exist??  Should I wait for it or just get my V 43 and forget about ever using the V3 & V4 Tesla SCers?

Literally does not matter how much prep Energica does. This is entirely in the hands of Tesla whether or not they want to approve certain manufacturers. You want change? Petition Tesla. They're the ones with the roadblocks. Period.

Energica is already ready pretty much, just waiting for Tesla to approve it.  Im fairly certain 43 is ready to handle it, or laid most the groundwork, it's not so much a matter of the bike it's the issue of the charger saying, OK Ill turn on for you.
Elon is too  big to really care about the little guys,  so they wait patiently for a reply...any reply from him.

Can you explain the difference between a V3 Telsa SC with Magic Dock and a Telsa V3 SC with a NACS to CCS adapter?

The ones with the Magic Dock don't need to check that the vehicle connected is a vehicle from the authorized list of vehicles. You can just connect them with the magic dock to the vehicle and start the session with the app.

Non-magic dock superchargers, need to get confirmation from the vehicle connected it is an authorized vehicle (Tesla, Ford, and Rivian) before starting the session.

It looks like Tesla is rolling out access to the Supercharger Network in the order the manufacturers committed to NACS. Ford was first so they get access now with authorized adapters. So F150 Lightnings and Mach E. Now Rivians can join in. Next is GM, Volvo, and Polestar.

We'll be able to use non-magic dock SCs when Tesla allows Energicas, specifically or if they ever just open it up to all.

In CA,the state with the most EVs by far, only three Magic Docks. All three in stupid locations where real CCS is only a short distance away from each.

I don't believe the Magic Docks were intended as a solution for Tesla, so I don't expect to see any massive rollout. I think they were a way to test the technology and collect data on which vehicles use them and potential demand. NACS adoption is the solution.

If  NACS will be a standard, then it will have to work with all CCS vehicles and that will have to include Energica.

Or else the new standard will be "all except Energica".

I think you're on the right track for sure.  Plus, from what I've read, there was also government funding grants on the table as well, likely driving/funding the magic docks.  Any that are currently open to Ford/Rivian, will hopefully be open to all asap.

Nonsense. The plug can be a standard without Tesla deciding to open their network to everyone. It's their private network. They are free to include or exclude whoever they want. Rivian even made their own exclusionary CCS network.

It's like back in the dial up modem days with the Kflex .vs. the X2 protocol,  even though Hayes was the so called standard..if I remember that far back correctly.

Tesla can  sell to whomever they want.  Other people are making AND selling an adapter already. I already have one and have been testing it.   It'd be in Tesla's best interest to let anyone / everyone with CCS use their stations as they can charge them to do so but they don't HAVE to, no matter what some may think.  I think the biggest hurdle right now would be them having to retrofit the adapter TO the fast chargers they already have deployed, but if one were to bring their own adapter, then it's just a matter of them saying, ok use your app and lets do this.

Many of the car manu's are selling / offering this adapter to their older customers to merge with Tesla super chargers.  I think its only a matter of time before Tesla says, get the app, sign up, log in, get a good adapter and plug in and go.

OIC, so there could be many EVs where Tesla SC plug will fit without an adapter but there will be no charging.

I was thinking Tesla's plan was to open them up to everybody.

BTW, do you know the difference between the Tesla Magic Docks on V-3 Tesla Superchargers and another V3 Tesla Supercharger  withOUT Magic Dock but with a Tesla to CCS adapter?

It seems to me that Telsa supercharging from their V3s have three different types of possible outputs. Tesla NACS, CCS (with Magic Dock) and all other V3s that have no Magic Dock and no way to convert to CCS unless the non-Tesla is running a special SW program which is probably not CCS at all.

So it looks like our Energicas will never be able to use the Tesla Superchargers, other than the few totally useless locations where they have Magic Dock.

3rd party port
app turns it on
set to go
how hard is that?

or another tesla owner can turn it on for you, if it asks for money you arrange it with the turner on'er.

I don't see any reason to jump to any such conclusions.

I hope you're correct, but even if it does happen, it looks like it will not be any time soon.

The number of DCFCs in Nevada keep on getting less and less. Been out of service for years in the most important locations.  I could get to MANY more places three years ago than today when there were many working CCS chargers that have been broken now for years.  Hawthone, NV/ Fallon, NV/Incline Village, NV / Middlegate, NV,/ Rhy Patch, NV and many others have been broken for around two years or more.

And then add all the Harley shops that no longer have charging and countless more.

Yeah, we have more chargers today, everywhere except for where needed the most. They just group them together in places such as Sacramento.

Many chargers in this area where I am now. I don't need any of those. Too close to home to be useful.

Tesla has the only decent fast charging out there, IMAO, and best maintained. But they have to get rid of all their V2s and get them upgraded. I hear those will never be CCS compatible.

And what happened to all of Biden's chargers?  We are in reverse when it comes to charging EVs, IMAO.

Because the world revolved around  your riding route.

Why don't you petition Elon directly since it's HIS chargers, and He would be the one footing the bill.  Tell him your routes and tell him to put chargers in at YOUR convenience!!

Chargers are expensive, but there are funds for them,  repairing them, I have a strong feeling there are NOT any grant monies laying around, which is why you see them staying broken, because the owners quickly seen the dream was just corporeal corporate bullshit to sell them a charger, because it would being in TONS of customers!!!  (all wanting free this and that Im thinking given the locations)

Have you ever considered opening up your personal  at home charger for public use?  People can come by, say hi, share a cup of coffee and charge at your place?

I am actually seriously considering this with the plugshare app, but I don't want to post any hours since i can't guarantee ill be home, but figure it'd be a great way to find any e bike riders out this way.  maybe even talk a tesla owner or two into buying one so I do have a partner to ride with them on the e bike.  Gas riders partners are fun but their ice bikes are just sooo sluggish you have to wait for them every time !! :)
