Title: Elcon 2.5kW chargers (2) for sale
Post by: benswing on March 06, 2015, 05:37:59 AM
Selling 2 Elcon 2.5kW chargers for use with 2012 Zero S or DS.  They are amazing and the ability to ride your Zero S or DS long distances will change your life.  I used them to ride across the country in 2013, and then rode 6,000 miles using them the next summer.  They are rock solid and waterproof.

Asking 1,500 + s/h for both including connecting wires.
You will need to install (or order form Hollywood Electrics) a y-cable and a J1772 connector.

Contact me with questions.

I still have 2 Elcons in my garage just waiting to quickly charge a 2012 bike.  Will listen to any offer, just send a message.

On the 2013 ride you just had the one 2.5 kW charger, correct?

Can these charge the bike in parallel with the 1 kW onboard charger?

You had these mounted as saddlebags as I recall. Anything special involved in fabricating mounts?

Hey Ben, what's specific about these chargers for the 2012 bike? Is it a different voltage than my 2014 SR? I'm thinking about getting a quick-charge scheme in place for my trip up to Hollister this July 4th, and you're offering these for a pretty fair discount over the stock price.

It is a different voltage, which is why I didn't jump on them the moment they were posted ;)

Protomech, you are correct (mostly...).  On the Ride the Future Tour in 2013 going across the country I had 1 2.5kW charger.  Though most of the time I used the onboard charger, and only rarely used the onboard and 2.5kW charger together.  My how things have changed...

You are not supposed to use both of them along with the onboard charger because it will trip the 30A fuse.  I think it is possible for short periods of time if you replace the 30A fuse with a 40A fuse, but do that at your own risk.  I did not ever attempt to charge using 3 chargers on my 2012 Zero S.

I fabricated mounts by buying a 2x1 ft piece of steel from Home Depot, drilled some holes in it and trimmed them to shape with tin snips.  Those were barely thick enough and after a few thousand miles they now are torn due to stress.

My new mounts are made of 16 gauge steel, which I have greater confidence in.  Haven't tried to cut it yet, and I'm not sure tin snips are going to do the trick.  Ideas for cutting 16 gauge steel?
