Title: Off the road... (fixed back on the Road :p )
Post by: Justin Andrews on March 08, 2015, 06:08:49 PM
*Urgh*
Sad to report that my Zero is currently off the road, after a rainstorm appears to have killed my bike.

Seems that water might have gotten into the motor and is causing a storm of motor temperature, encoder failures & pre-charge errors.
Needless to say the controller is unimpressed and immediately shuts down.

Waiting for parts from Zero, but here behind enemy lines it might take a while for an airdrop.

Bit glum about this.
Good riding everyone else, hopefully rejoin you all soon.

I have a ventilated motor and have no such problems :/

Granted I got some lovely encoder errors when I encountered my first couple of rain storms because the previous owner didn't seal off the wires going into the encoder >_<

It is pretty easy to open the side of the encoder cover, let it air out, seal it off (wires coming in top), apply dielectric to the encoder, and ride again ;)

Sorry to hear that. Zero should look seriously at such issues. We don't all ride in California.

Sorry to hear this Justin.  No chance it just needs to dry out?

Damn. I've been okay so far in Seattle, even in heavy rain. Good luck!

Its been nearly two weeks since the incident.
The log entries for the ride itself are just weird, lots of external charger engaging (and the charging light would flash during regen) and the motor would cut out and require the bike to be pushed to restart (without recycling power) which is a new form of the glitch if nothing else.

After that, the contactor fails to engage, and the logs are full of precharge errors, temp faults and encoder faults (even though the bikes not moving)
My bet is the encoder board is fried.

The bike is still under warranty, so I'm "wimping" out and getting it fixed under that.

I suspect I'm just unlucky when it comes to bikes and rain. :)

Well I'm so glad you have the warranty to get it sorted.  Good luck and keep us updated.

Will do, though as I say, here behind enemy lines it might take longer for the parts to come through... ;)

Maybe not.  :o

Streetbike have contacted me to say the parts have shipped and they are collecting my bike this weekend...  ;D

Hope you get a swift resolution (given that it's been 2+ weeks already). Please update with the fixes needed once you're back on the road.

That sounds positive Justin.  Fingers crossed...

Dealer contacted me to say that the new motor and firmware revisions are done, and that a fault with a charger has been fixed as well.

With a bit of luck I should be picking my bike up next week. :)

Hey Justin. I have the same bike as you, and just got mine back from having the motor replaced and firmware updated yesterday! Fingers crossed all goes well this season.

Bike back from the shop, a fairly spirited run home in great weather was just what I needed.

While I was there I also spied a 2012 with the upgrade (2013 ZF Motor) fitted, I took some pictures, which I'll share shortly.
