KTM's CEO was interviewed by Cycle World magazine in their January/February (two months?) 2016 issue on page 36 of the magazine.  He has this to say about the Freeride E:

"We were thinking that the buyer would be the young mountain-bike guy or the really sporty enduro guy who wants to train in his private garden.  But it's hunters, landlords, guys up in the mountains running restaurants or whatever.  For now it's limited by the high price, but if the cost of batteries comes down, it will become a serious alternative.  For urban mobility, for sure it's coming, but I don't see big bikes going electric in the short term."

I believe the Freeride E battery is 360 Samsung INR-18650-20R (72S5P, ~260V 10Ah). These cost somewhere around $2 (http://www.dhgate.com/product/2015-hot-sale-samsung-18650-batteries-inr18650/259758768.html#s1-0-1a;srp|2290280703) each in bulk (~$300/kWh).

Assembling the rest of the battery pack is certainly not free .. but the cell cost is a little north of 5% of the bike's MSRP. Not exactly crippling.
