Title: How to bleed rear brake on Zero DSR
Post by: davidrnewman on July 29, 2020, 08:34:01 PM
I may have to bleed my rear brake, as I have to press down hard on the foot pedal to get any braking. After checking the surface of the brake pads, the next step will be to bleed the rear brake.

But I cannot find any instructions on how to bleed the rear brake. There is nothing in the unofficial manual and all the official DSR is a warning: "Your motorcycle is equipped with ABS. You can only bleed
the brake system if fluid still remains in the HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit).
Bleeding a dry HCU requires an evacuation and fluid fill machine."

So how do I bleed it?

You can bleed abs breaks the same way as regular brakes but keep in mind to NOT turn on the ignition, this will activate the abs pump and the next step is a
dealer or shop with a abs bleeder.

So fill up the oil reservoir to the max level and pump the brake untill it is hard,  open up the bleeding nippel while keep pressing the brake pedal in this case.  Turn the
nippel back to the closed position and repeat this step untill all air is out the system. I use a vacuum bleeder with compressor and this is a lot easier to do by your own.

The manual procedure as I speak of above is best perform with 2 persons, one the is pushing the brake and one the manipulate the bleeding nipple.

So if you ever bleed brakes before, it is the same procedure with or without abs, the only downside is that the abs pump still will have some of the old brakefluid but in
this case, just for bleeding ( let the air out the system ) it does not matter.

Thank you. That is helpful. I was worried about the ABS (higher than the reservoir).
