Title: Random Question
Post by: Tmentz on December 31, 2011, 03:29:55 AM
Has anyone taken the rectifier off of a motorcycle stator/generator or off a car alternator and tested how many volts it would put out?

If not, any theories on possible volt/Amp outputs?

Motorcycle rectifiers are generally a three phase shunt design (SCR controlled), so you need AC input, and it wastes any excess power.

Car alternators generally (I think) have an armature field which is varied by the rectifier to give the required output.

Both are somewhat antiquated technology, and the switchmode converters are by far a better option for EVs.
