Title: Loose mirror
Post by: rotoiti on June 07, 2012, 02:31:41 AM
The right hand mirror on my DS became loose to the point that wind dislodges it easily. Only the connector from the mirror casing to the stem is loose, the extender is fine. I have looked but I don't see any obvious ways of tightening it. Any tips?

When I bought my bike, I was given a special tool to adjust and tighten the mirror mounts. See attached photo of the instructions and tool.  The one thing you really need is a 2 mm hex wrench to loosen and tighten the locking screw (which ironically was not provided). There are 6 small holes and only one is the lock screw that the hex wrench will fit.  The other 5 holes are just holes. The special tool doesn't really seem to be needed. Just move the mirror to where you want it, and tighten the set screw with the hex wrench.

Ah, that should be simple enough, thanks! And bummer, I didn't get the tool, but I should be OK if the 2 mm wrench works.

I had the same problem with mine. At first, I just tried tightening the 2mm hex screw, but that didn't seem to make the mirror any less prone to being dislodged. After playing with it some more, I figured out how to get the mirror tight.

The trick as Richard alluded to is with the little plate on the back of the mirror, with 6 holes on it, that goes over the pivot ball on the mount. This entire plate actually screws into and out of the mirror body. The little 2mm allen screw is merely a set screw to keep the plate from backing out of the mirror once you get it adjusted.

Loosen that allen, then while holding that plate still (with your allen wrench stuck into one of the holes), rotate the mirror clockwise (from the glass side of the mirror) to tighten it. A quarter turn or so is probably all you need. Retighten the allen screw and then rotate the mirror to adjust it for proper rear view. It should be noticeable harder to move now. You may have to repeat this process to get it like you like it.

Thanks for the info; I just emailed the service department to see about getting the pin spanner tool [and a 28T sprocket;]...

CliC's method worked wonders, the mirror is now fixed. Thanks all.

Rick, let us know what they would tell you about the sprocket.

I just tightened up my left mirror and, instead of using the factory tool, I used a set of hobbyist needle-nose pliers. I stuck the two points of the pliers in the opposite holes, after loosening the set screw. I then used the pliers to turn the mounting disc to increase the tension on the mirror ball and tightened the set screw with the 2 mm hex wrench. It worked perfectly.   :)

That is an excellent idea.
