Yes, the price makes it more generally attainable by an older clientele, but I think that most younger riders who either have the cash or can get a loan are probably more interested in spending that on all-out performance (sportbikes) rather than the Zero's other attributes (Terry of OffTheGrid fame notwithstanding :).

As for getting the ZF9, I figured, why make the biggest e-bike liability even bigger by not getting as much battery as you could put in the thing? Yes, it adds weight, but if I wanted max performance I'd get a sportbike (or maybe a KTM, to compare something to the DS). The US $2500 delta is also a consideration, but it wasn't a roadblock for me fortunately. If Zero offered a tailpack auxiliary battery that got you another 20-40 miles range I'd consider it.

Hi Cirrus,

I'm curious what kind of differences you're seeing between the 2010 and 2011 S?
Hi, I have been on a 2010 before. The 2011 S handles much better as they have gone to more standard 17" tyres. Overall the finish has improved, like the black battery, in terms of range -- verdict is that might be close to 10% better -- but really difficult to say. Love the belt drive as it is quiet - no more chain rattling and me wondering whats wrong. Then again, cannot change easily to a different gearing ....

Anyone compared the 2011 S/DS to the 2012 XU ? range and top speed seem simlar. Wondering accellaration from 0 or as well agility while riding (accel 10+).

No surprise. The bikes are where the dealers are and it will become more that way with time. I predict there will be several Empulse owners from Oregon too. There are still a few knowledgeable people, like Doc for example, who aren't so concerned about a dealer being close, but those people are a small minority. If you want to sell a $15,000+ bike, you have to have dealers. That is why I think Brammo, with almost no dealers listed, is going to have a very rough couple of years. Some people might buy a $1,000 scooter and have it drop shipped, but almost nobody is going to pay 15-20 times that amount without local support.

Agree on the importance of the dealer network. I expect dealers dropped or avoided Brammo due to two major blunders:

1. Signed up a low margin electronics retailer BestBuy as a distributor to sell Impulse. Low margin distributors can't afford to do demos or train sales on the product. Dealers hate to spend time and resources to sell product only to have the prospect buy from a discounter.

2. Failure to deliver product on time and on spec. This is a red flag for dealers.  No company that does this will ever earn the trust of dealers. It's another reason for my bet on Brammo's eventual demise.

No Zero dealers anywhere near me in 2011 so I whipped out a credit card and bought an S off the web site. Came in a crate. Rolled it off, plugged in two fuses, and enjoyed a year of happy riding before upgrading to a 2012.

Bought my 2012 S from a dealer 1 hour away. Wish they were closer but that's not too bad.

Post by: protomech on August 17, 2012, 11:34:27 PM
Brammo stopped distributing the Enertia through Best Buy a year or two ago.

I suspect they will tap the Polaris dealer network to sell the Empulse - eventually. The Empulse R is more likely to be direct sales.

I bought my S through Hollywood Electrics (and after a store visit and a ride on a 2011), but it shipped to me in a cardboard crate direct from Zero.

Looking back on it, it was certainly a leap of faith to order a $12K electric motorcycle online and take it drop shipped. But I didn't have the slightest hiccup with the bike. 100% reliable, so it worked out. Frankly that's a problem for dealers who make a good chunk of profits off maintenance and repairs. A maintenance and trouble-free bike is kind of a nightmare for dealers.

I predict that eventually Zero sells product the way Apple does, through Zero retailers. Not for a few years, though. Too soon to try now.

Finally took delivery yesterday, so I can officially answer the poll.  Had a great ride home from lower Manhattan - 35 miles, mostly at highway speeds, took only seven out of twelve bars on the ZF6.  A real thrill to be able to tap the throttle on the highway, and suddenly you are 100 yards ahead of the guy drifting into your lane!

Man, I am going to be heartbroken if this bike catches the "glitch" and goes out of commission.
Title: Re: Zero owner age/location/bike year and model
Post by: protomech on September 07, 2012, 04:17:18 AM
The glitches seem to happen primarily after a couple thousand miles and several months of use.

I will be both surprised and dismayed if Zero has not finalized a fix and is in the process of correcting bikes before the end of September.

Enjoy your ZF6. Please do let us know if you have any trouble with the bike, but expect a resolution from Zero well before you have issues.

sits next to the S1000RR which does not get mutch attention these days
daily commuter to and from the airport (about 40 miles)  currently about 4000 miles
with absolutely no problems.  Zero did send a guy out to test the brake switch and
seal up the main battery board
caused me to go look at a Model S and put down a deposit....  I'm hooked on electric
needs tires - the super motard look is for me and it looks like Avon is the tire of choice
also just ordered the same LED brake/turn signal module I put on the S1000RR as it

what a blast.

43 y/o er doc in grand junction, co, usa.  2012 ds zf9.  i figure my 10kw grid-tied solar system entitles me to plugging in at night.

the silent, smooth, swift nature of the bike is fantastic.  it will make an invigorating commuter, to say the least.  i can plug into alt vehicle plugs at work.

very happy so far, if i hadn't made that clear.

24 - Jersey (British Channel Islands) - Also an S ZF9 Limited Edition.

Came off the crate yesterday and waiting for paperwork before i can ride it.  It sits next to a tuned KTM 690 SMC which doesn't do more than 3 miles without something breaking or falling off so hopefully the zero will be a tad more reliable.  Jersey is only 9 miles x 5 with a 40mph speed limit and hellish traffic, so what better than an electric bike.

Yes and I'm happy with my 2013 FX so I'm not thinking about buying a 2014. Of course, nothing in the life of an early adopter is certain.  ;) Well, one thing is certain: We will never make a profit on our purchases. :-[

Age update: I'm now 78. My motto (quote from a song): "The road goes on forever and the party never ends".

Have fun everybody and ride safely!

1. Will do! I have a couple of Gopros that are charged and ready to go :)
2. The dealership said late Jan to early Feb.
3. Yes, I've had two Yamaha R1s in the past. They have a tiny bit more torque (112) but at very limited RPMs so I'm looking forward to a constant torque.

Will do!
I just heard from a friendly Zero rep. on this forum that the heated grips I ordered might not be compatible with the 2014 Zeros. I'm looking forward to learning what that means.

Whatever it means, go with heated gloves, they're way more effective.

Hey, just adding this here:

I'm working on a a permanent domain, but in the meantime, I've put it on my personal website:
http://www.evfr.net/ (http://www.evfr.net/)
(the map WILL retain any information you enter, so when I do finally port somewhere, the data stays with the map)

Go to the link above, click "add" and enter your information. I kind of hope people put their email so other users can contact them. This is for all motorcycle users right now. I may make changes in the coming days, but I'll try my best to keep things intact.

Right now, I approve your locations, but I may change that. We'll see how bad spam is.
This is all on my personal domain and in no way related to my business.

Enjoy!
