Title: 2012 Zero XU "Glitch"
Post by: craigq on July 31, 2013, 05:51:14 PM
So there is the official recall for the 2012 S/DS "glitch" motor controller issue. No mention of the 2012 XU though.

Guess what happened while commuting this morning... odd noise/pulsing for about 1KM, I shut it down and inspected for anything odd, powered it back up and continued, then 1KM later the power cut out completely while riding through a corner. I've notified both Zero and Transport Canada.

It seems like one thing after another with this bike. Has anyone else experienced the "glitch" with an XU? I think vchampain mentioned it...

I think the original glitch was thought to be specific to the sincos encoder on the dual-rotor S/DS bikes. The PMAC motor on the XU is single-rotor.

Can you describe the noise/pulsing effect you saw? That sounds very much like the glitches I've seen on my S.

Do you know if the controller firmware has ever been updated?

Hi protomech! The bike's controller firmware hasn't been updated, whatever it shipped from the factory is what it currently has. The BMS was replaced/updated a couple of weeks ago, but the dealer only had the power pack, not the bike.

I'd describe it as an audible noise (can't describe further as I normally ride with earplugs, I'll describe it better tonight w/out earplugs) that coincided with what felt like very minor output power fluctuation even if the the throttle was kept at a constant position. That went on for a little bit, then I was coming out of a corner and attempted to apply throttle when the motor died.

Has your bike been repaired yet?

Yeah, that sounds pretty much exactly like what I've seen recently.

The last I heard was the motor had been shipped back to Zero, and it was expected to be repaired quickly. I need to follow up on that; I'll post an update to the 2012 glitch thread.

Spoke with Zero customer service, they advise getting the bike to the dealer, with it requiring anything from firmware upgrades to possibly a new motor. We'll see how long this one takes. Flatbed towing fees are going to be awesome...

EDIT: commute home was uneventful. Motor sounded normal, no odd noises.

Hello !

Yes I had the glitch : many times, the motor stopped either after a road bump, or after a few km, without clear reason. After stopping and restarting it worked again, but after the motor stopped while lane switching, I took the bike to my dealership. The XU is currently repaired, they sent it back to Netherlands. I still don't know what happened. In the meantime, i bought a Zero S 2013.

I've had that problem.. in fact I rode all of 14 days on my 2011 xu since May.  The rest of the time has been spent trying to get it fixed.  I'm about to consider a 2012 xu, but if that is still a problem I'm sincerely worried.  I wonder how many 2012 xu owners have not had a problem with this?

If you go for a 2012 XU, ensure the seller has it sent to the factory and fixed before you get it !

Around 1800 KM. Mine's an early build, one of the 1st XU's in Canada for 2012.
