Title: Survey on Zeros so far
Post by: NEW2elec on June 11, 2015, 07:15:28 PM
Hi guys this is such a small company  and smaller still forum posters but I thought it would be interesting to get some idea of a bigger picture of who owns what and amount of riding they do on it, type of riding and any issues (break downs, dealer issues, overall satisfaction) I know I was reading post well before I joined and others might like some info all in one place.

Type: 2014 Zero SR with Power Tank bought used 3800 miles on odometer from Dealer (It was a manufacturers Demo)
Riding Style: Use it for 40 mile round trip Commute to and from work 90% highway 10% city

I've only had it for a little over a month and already put on over 700 miles on it.
The only issue I've had so far was the overheating light coming on after a 20 mile ride home in 90 degree heat after accelerating from a light pretty hard. The light started blinking but the bike performed normal. About 5-10 seconds after letting off the throttle the light went off.

Loving the bike so far

Been there done that with every x platform from 2007 to 2013

Only one I missed was the 12xu

Love them all; gas bikes suck

That is all

Same bike as above (2014 SR w/ power tank) bought used from a car dealership with 600km on it. Was a trade-in they wanted to shift.

Rides beautifully, doesn't currently turn off (http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=4738.0).

It's replacing the current steed and it's associated duties of getting me to work during the week and plastering a giant grin on my face over the weekend.

2014 Zero S, with power tank.  I ride it about 500 miles a month around the local area. Most of my rides are to visit friends and relatives (free charging!) and for utility reasons, such as shopping and other short trips that are just not worth warming up one of my other motorcycles.  My Zero has replaced my car for most trips and I am only driving my 1999 Saturn station wagon about 300 miles a year now.  After the original power tank was replaced because it was defective, I have not had any problems and the bike has run perfectly for the past year.  I haven't even had to adjust the drive belt yet.  :)

2013 S 8.5 with 10,500 miles. Local pleasure riding. I ride it almost every day. I previously owned a 2011 S with the DC motor. The brushes caused the motor to fail on that one after just 3700 mi. or so. I have had no issues with the 13 S since the firmware update a year ago. Before that it would need to be re-booted a couple times before setting off occasionally.

Rode my 2012 Zero S for 23,500 miles before trading it in.  Daily commuter, plenty of highway, rode it cross country in 2013, then on a 6,000 mile ride around the east coast and midwest.

Now riding a 2014 Zero SR and put about 3,000 miles on it in 3 months.  Going for a 5,000 mile trip starting tomorrow from NYC to FL, over to Mexico, up to Ohio then back home.

Love it!

2013 DS 11.4 with 14,000 miles. Regular commuting, local trips, and all errands like groceries. I have top and side cases and a commuter windscreen. I get about 100 miles per charge regularly which includes a lot of highway usage.

I had a BMS issue the first year I rode it, and a loose front sprocket key, both fixed under warrantee. I upgraded the rear brakes with the 2014 J Juan kit.

I'm hoping to put a big fairing on it and fast-DC charger so I can make longer day trips. It's possible I'll be lured to trade for a 2016 model, since improvements seem to keep stacking up.

2015 FX with a top case.  I use it as a commuter bike; I only use my car when weather's bad or driving people and cargo.  I have yet to find any dirt trails where I live, but I'm still looking.

Brand new so no issues as of yet.

Dealer was great, no issues whatsoever.

Insurance was a problem: State Farm California recognizes the bike while State Farm New York does not for some reason. I use progressive now, but I wish I could have had it all under one roof.

2012XU. back roads commuter. Been reliable for the past 6 months. Prior to that, multiple unreliability issues*

 - see http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=3504.0 (http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=3504.0)

So, it's not a bike that's trusted in this household.

Peter

*What's the collective noun for multiple issues with motorcycle reliability? A BSA?

Hitting two years on my 2013 S 11.4. There's 16,500 miles on the odometer and that's mostly highway commuting, plus a few pleasure rides here and there. I did have a problem with the motor shaft making doing this weird rattle, which the dealer and Zero were able to get resolved after a couple tries.

Obviously, life would have been better without that issue, but I am still satisfied with the bike as it has been solid since then

I just got  '15 9.4 DS which I converted to a 12.6, and its got about 7k on the odo so far.

Its mostly used for highway commuting, my commute is 67mi each way 65-70mph and one 2k ft mountain pass.

So far, it has only one problem and that was the onboard charger, which went tits up a day into owning it. Zero service was pretty inept, so I fixed it myself.

about time for some new tires in another thousand miles or so.

2013 S 8.5 with only 3400 miles. Used for city commuting during warm weather. Round trip commute only 16 miles, all city. Split the week between bicycle and Zero. Still take long trips and weekend jaunts on IC bike and use IC bike  in winter as it has a fairing, heated grips and hippo hands. (Remember those?) love the Zero.  Being so light and maneuverable it's perfect for the city. Had some BMS issues early on but Zero fixed everything on warranty.  Dealer and factory were helpful and knowledgable. Can't wait to see what 2016 brings.

I got a factory demo 2013 DS with 50 km on it last fall.  Since then, I've put 4400 km on it.  I recently had a loose front pulley issue which was making a weird clicking noise (http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=4639).  My dealership resolved it very quickly.  I made some light modifications (https://ptruchon.pagekite.me/wiki/blog/2015-03-30/electric-zero-motorcycle) to it, but what I'm really looking forward to is an integrated a fast(er) charging option.

I have a 2014 SR that I purchased as Demo bike with 1700 miles on it. I ride it as my 44 mile a day commuter vehicle. Just passed the 5000 mile mark and I purchased it in Oct. '14.
Only issues I have had so far have been minor power issues likely caused from leaving it uncovered in the rain. The stock rubber on the '14 sucks and it looks like I will be replacing the rear tire soon.
Other than that I love the thing. It gets attention from so many people I have a hard time stopping at lights without drivers yelling questions out their windows at me ;)

2009 MX Extreme bought used from a former Zero sales rep in 2011: died almost immediately, could not resurrect.
2011 XD factory demo gifted to me by Zero for the cost of shipping as a replacement for the 2009: undiagnosable cutting out issues.
2012 DS ZF9 purchased used in December 2013: "Glitch", remotely updated firmware, replaced motor, replaced charger, sold yesterday.
Future:  I'll be riding the bus for a while.

2013 S (extremely modified) used for racing with 600 miles. I have since put an extra 9400 miles on it mostly highway. Many of my issues stem from this being a modified bike.

1) Had encoder issues due to wires INSIDE the motor not being sealed on the way to the encoder. This only happened because my motor is ventilated.

2) Had the bike loose power while in the middle of a snow storm going about 40 ish ... Still don't know why it happened but it seemed every time it did happen the temperature on the controller was -2 or 0 according to the logs. I "fixed" this by making a sheet metal cover for the controller grill which kept the controller the same temp as the battery on average (about 65 on days when it was 15 out for example)

3) Had a couple cases where I would start the bike up and see no bars after fully charging. Fixed this by shutting the bike off and turning it on till it showed bars. The last time this happened the code was for an CAN error. I made sure the pugs where the CAN communicate where tight then restarted and it worked. Still don't know true cause.

4) When rain gets on top of the controller the warning, green, and temp light all flash off and on at different frequencies and intervals. I suspect this is caused by water making its way into the controller plug. I haven't fixed this yet as it doesn't affect performance and I know the cause now.

5) Engine  off/on switch (red one) has contact issues. I have taken it apart to try to "fix" it but it isn't perfect. Sometimes the bike will indicate it can move when the switch is turned to the off position. This could easily be fixed by using a better switch.

2010 DS which was a daily city commuter and greatly fun. Motor replaced under warranty and battery is not in good shape, now sold. 2014 DS 11.4 which is awesome. Charger just replaced under warranty.

2012 XU New old stock August 2013, about 5K miles on it right now.
Early issues with fork seals, replaced under warranty each time in
reasonable time frame. Recently had some issues cutting out.
Harlan at Hollywood Electrics determined that a new motor was called
for. The diagnosis was performed, and, new motor installed in just a couple weeks,
also under warranty.
2013 FX presently has around 8300 miles, purchased it exactly
one year ago from member of this forum with a few hundred miles on it.
Set up as supermoto with S Front end, wheels, and Fox Shock. 8 thousand
trouble free miles.
The last part that I needed replaced under warranty was from a major
Japanese manufacturer and took several months. Same dealer that did
the forks on the XU.

Hi,

I just bought an SR last week, 750 miles so far of hard cornering and no issues other than I wish it charged faster.

I'll check back in when I hit 10,000 miles.

I had a 2010 DS. Lots of problems but Zero was very supportive and I put 15,000 miles on it before selling.

Ride on! Electrics are amazing!

BIKE:  2014 S 11.4 w/ POWER-TANK

RIDING:  Running around town, visiting coffee shops, buying chips and dip at local grocery store.

PROBLEMS:  Bought new, local dealer cluseless about Z-bikes, dashboard defective from day one.  Multiple problems with BMS.  After latest + one month stint at dealership problems with BMS still exist.  ZERO corporate VERY unhelpful.  Want me to send it back again.

Bike is an over-priced-two-wheeled-turd still under warranty but company will not even consider taking it back.

If you are luck enough to have a Z-bike that works, be thankful.  If you have problems, the company will not be very helpful.

Poor product from a poor company.  DO NOT BUY THEIR JUNK !

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with your Zero S. It does seem like there happens to be a few duds out there that seem to need a lot of work, but overall they are pretty reliable considering others' experiences. I still want to get one next year but the negative experiences do give me something to think about. I just hope that they work out all these kinks, and make the dealers that sell them a little more cognizant of what they are selling and how to fix them.

2015 SR - I ride 30 miles round trip each day to work in DC, 70% highway. Almost 800 miles on her in less than a month. I've had 5 motorcycles over 13 years and this is the most fun, pleasant to ride and cheapest to operate out of them all. No issues so far, and I'm hoping that continues for years.

I am adding some accessories from Hollywood Electrics later this month, hoping to do some extended cruising over the weekends next month. Oh, no power tank, but it seems like quicker charging is more important than slightly longer range.

Love it!

How did you ride it cross country? Stop every so many miles and rest long enough to charge then ride again?

He's been video-blogging (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbWCCYJCsilotFiverwYK4GeKno-KAyAt) it (see this thread (http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=4736.0)). Regarding the negative posts on this thread: I was very reticent to buy a new Zero after reading negative comments on this site. The motorcycles are expensive and there just aren't Zero dealers in every small town. A negative post seems to resonate louder than the multitude of positive ones but that is just human nature to react that way.

I did myself a favor and visited the factory in early May and then went on a test ride. The ride alone was impressive but the factory production facility will blow your mind! They have made significant progress in quality of components and standardization of assembly. Each nut and bolt and every part is attached the same with each motorcycle. This speaks volumes to production consistency and quality. The visit really sealed it for me and I now own a 2015 SR that I have ridden for 2000 miles, in 5 weeks of ownership, and I could not be happier.

Last weekend I rode 85 miles on a single charge, the great majority of it on hilly highway, and got home with 15% charge; and I am 6', 190 lbs. I was very impressed[/u] with the range.

I, too, was waiting until the PERFECT combination of price, range, charge speed was available but I came to the realization that I seldom exceed the range limit of my SR without the power tank. So I took the plunge.

Do yourself a favor and pick one up. I am so glad I did.

Hey Emtkopan, I didn't see this until now.  The videos will give much greater detail at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbWCCYJCsilotFiverwYK4GeKno-KAyAt (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbWCCYJCsilotFiverwYK4GeKno-KAyAt)

But the short answer is that I averaged 312 miles per day traveling about 100 miles per charge, then recharging at car charging stations or RV parks.  I have the power tank and 2 Elcon 2500 Watt chargers to get me going more quickly.

My longest day was 475 miles from Cleveland to home in NJ.  Needless to say, I absolutely love my SR, and am planning on doing some more long distance riding next summer.

I have a 2015 SR, had a problem with SOC reading and a couple of one offs. Was fixed with a software update and some fiddling with settings.
It was done at 700 km (while I was on holidays for 6 weeks). Now I have done 4,000 km. So it's still only early days. But it never affected riding the bike or the way it went/goes.
I upgraded from a scooter, so it goes without saying that I love it.

2012 XU - had battery issues. Took some time to be solved. Now fixed- i gave it to my mother, she enjoys it.
2013 S - 9000 km. A few issue - the "click", bad belt replacement causing it to break twice in a row and generated . BMS changed.

Overall first issues induced tough discussions with dealer (i suppose they were learning too, but we also had communication issues). Now much better - minor issues happen but they lend me another zero each time. I will probably sell the 2013 to buy a SR.

Riding mainly in a the city. Enjoy the bike, its smoothness and the time saved (no need to wait at the gas station, I just plug it in the morning once a week).

Bought my Zero S 11.4 2013 new in July 2013 and did 35000 km with no serious issues so far. I use it for daily commute except winter for 40 km per day plus fun trips before or after work. Once a year i do long distance trips at WAVE Trophy (see: www.wavetrophy.com (http://www.wavetrophy.com)) using my two QuiQ Chargers mounted in Givi side cases.

2012 S ZF9 Rear & front suspension replaced, BMS replaced, sold with 15.000 Km, new owner seems happy.
2014 SR (2015 renewal program) Charger replaced

I'm overall very happy with both bikes performance (the SR is a great and fun bike) although I'm concern about motor thermal issues, we'll see in the summer...

2012 S ZF6  - 24,000 miles so far.  (1)Glitch, (2)Brief programming problem where BMS thought the bike was a ZF9, (3)Rear fender cracks, (4)Loose front sprocket.   All fixed now.  The battery is down to about 85% original capacity, a little disappointing considering the lowish mileage (equivalent to about 550 100%DOD cycles), but maybe expected given 4 years of aging.

I've really enjoyed my time with Zero.  Got it for just $5000 new (Colorado had a brief window with monster tax breaks), will get another Zero when my current one gives out.  At this point it's looking like the battery will be the weak link, I'm hoping for another 25,000 miles before it drops to 50% capacity.

Hey Paul, first congrats for putting so many miles on a 2012 ZF6! That's pretty amazing considering the new FX and FXS have more battery capacity than that bike did!  Just curious how low you usually ran the batteries for my own knowledge.  I also have a 2012 and over 75,000 miles and have less than 1% loss in capacity.  But I have more capacity by a lot, so each cell doesn't get as much of a workout.  Also I rarely go below three or four bars on most trips.  Rarely do I ever see the two flashing bars, although I have run it to empty before.  Just curious to the frequency you ran the batteries to say perhaps the two flashing bars before recharging.  Thanks!

I've had 2 Zero's.

A 2012 with 75,000+ miles.  Had some issues but all due to my modifications.  This bike was highly modified.  Can do 300 miles on a charge at 70 mph and recharge in an hour.  But it weighs 1400 lbs when fully loaded with me, all my gear, and hundreds of feet of extension cords and cables.

A 2015 with 8000+ miles.  Trouble free.

Maybe 1-in-4 rides do I get down to 2 flashing bars?  Remember also at WOT I'm pulling around 4-5C,  whereas on your 2012 "ZF21" you're only going to see around 1.5C discharge.

I had a 2012 XU that had fork seal issues when new, several changes were needed, but, finally worked out okay.
Just before the end of the warranty, I started having "glitches". The bike was taken to HollyWood Electrics, where
a new motor was installed under warranty. On the way home from picking it up, I was run over by an SUV, and,
the bike was totaled. All issues were taken care of to my satisfaction.
I now have a 2013 FX that I have had for about a year and a half. It is set up as a SuperMoto. No issues with it
at all. S Front End, S Front Brake, S Wheels, Fox shock, and, DigiNow Dongle.

2011 XU: put some miles on it. Needed a MBB, BMS, throttle ... then they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Zero is in the process of making things right.
2014 SR: bought it new, love it. Plan to keep it forever. Getting luggage and quick charge capability set up so I can 'tour' with it. Right now the steering lock is broken (just stopped working one day) and it was delivered with a torn up grip (has never been made right but I know it's cheap to fix). Otherwise it's been good. The power is addictive. I can't wait for the stock tires to be done so I can put better tires on it.

2016 Zero SR 13.0 + Power Tank.

Mainly commuting and general cruising.
Had a minor firmware issue just after I got the bike, but Harlan and team gave me a loaner (2015 SR) while the bike was being worked on, and got the issue resolved. I picked up the bike on Friday, and everything seems good.

Previously had regular motorcycles, all 600s - Honda '02 F4i and '04 RR.
Range meets 99% of my needs.

Love the raw acceleration, and the awesome simplicity of charging.

'15 FX fell in love immediately! Huge grin inside helmet every ride!

Sold RG500, RZ500, etc.

Got a '16 FXS yesterday, only 1 quick ride, F**k yes! Shouldn't have this much fun with clothes on!

Can't wait to do some V twin "lifestyle" hunting.

My wife and I purchased 2 of the 2014 DS bikes.

Mine has the 25T drive sprocket, Power Tank, SoundRacer, ostrich leather seat, and custom paint with windshield. My wife's DS is completely stock. The bikes are weekend fun vehicles, and we average ~1,000 mi/yr. We ride the Santa Cruz forests and enjoy the quiet aspect, as do the animals that often allow us within 20-50'. I'm sure the bicyclists appreciate the lack of noise on windy mountainous roads, too! It is her first bike, and my 10th, or so (traded in a HD XR1200), and we love the torque and quiet characteristics.

My bike has minor, although consistent through several shop visits, BMS issues related to not charging all the way (solved by unplugging and re-plugging the power cord), and now, with the latest firmware upgrade, always showing starting charge as 100%, even when it may really be down to 20%. That is, discharging to, say, 20% and stopping for a break, then starting out again will result in a 100% charge indication that appears to resolve, after 15 minutes, or so, to the actual charge level (less than 20%, in this example). A minor irritant, and the bike rides well!

My wife's new bike suffered a battery contactor issue on the ride home from the shop, and on the day of the purchase, breaking her heart:-(  It was resolved a few weeks later and has been perfect ever since, and she is in love with it, again!

We are very environmentally sensitive (also have CNG cars) and pro-electric, with 6kw home rooftop solar panels, and I expect to purchase a 2016 DSR this year, mainly for the ABS brakes and higher-torque system. Just Love that torque!

Go Zero, go!

I had a similar problem with my 2015 SR, was fixed with some software tuning on the first service. I am in Australia and it was fixed by plugging it into the computer (or something) and a guy from Zero in the US did it remotely.

My display error occured after the latest FW update at the local shop. A minor irritant to a great bike!

I'd love to see a picture of yours.

i posted photos last year, but here are a few. The image is of a deep sea bathypelagic viper Angler Fish, the type with glowing bioluminescent lures to attract fish to their teeth.

There is a plasma disk inserted each side of the tank. A color LED strip connects the plasma disk with the airbrushed painting The SoundRacer speakers are next to the headlight, and waterproof rocker switches control them.

Can you share a video / audio of how that soundracer setup sounds?

You can view a short video of the SoundRacer operation here: https://youtu.be/SE_gmrhzU_Y  Of course, the sound is very different (more bass) than the speakers you may have for your PC or mobile, but you can see the acceleration rate as I press the high-beam flash lever.

Thanks. Did you also wire it to respond to the throttle?

No, the SoundRacer module has wheel-mounted magnets for the hall-effect sensor, for speed-related sound frequency increase. I can't blip the sound with the throttle, since the bike lacks a clutch. It would sound cool to brake the front wheel, stand up, and then spin the rear wheel while gunning the throttle, no doubt!
