Title: Integrated LED taillight for FX?
Post by: clay.leihy on September 15, 2016, 06:08:47 AM
Anyone know if these will fit? Sure looks like it. I even confirmed with one vendor that the stud spacing is about 4.5 inches. I might have to get one.

This is the cheap Chinese model. There is a better, more expensive one (by Moto dynamics) that has sequential turn signals and blinking brake light.

Here's the '14-'16 FX taillight (http://www.jute.com.tw/en/products_show.php?product_sn=770) - it looks just about identical to the one you linked to in terms of shape and fit.

My 2015 has a retrofit LED "tower" bulb. Should it have come with a newer style integrated LED unit?

Here was my solution - all LED and slimmer profile than stock.

The only drawback I've found is that the fender is weak, and when it flops down the license plate can catch on the knobbies and get bent.  This could presumably be solved by stiffening the fender, or by scooting the assembly back another inch from where I have it installed.

completely replacing everything on my FXS. almost have the mock-up done. just need to finish sorting the wires. since this pic i have mounted mini-led turn signals on each side as well. looks really clean, and almost stock. i haven't weighed the piece i took out but i say close to 4lbs. saved in weight.

When I click the link above the image, it shows up as a Ducati light.
If I put in Zero FX or S, it says not compatible.

If you have to trust ebay to tell you if a mod is compatible with your bike... Dont mod your bike. lol.

I believe Ducati and Zero use the same part, probably made by Stanley.

with blinkers installed.

did not have any time today to work on the wiring. probably try and go in tomorrow and work on it. going to just cut and solder in the stock plugs so everything is still plug and play. currently the bike is sitting in my room at work. i broke my heel a few weeks ago and decided it was better to have it sitting in an air conditioned room than my hot AZ garage. plus, then i can work on it at work.  ;D

so far i would rate this mod a 3 out of 10 assuming you can cut, splice, solder, and heat shrink wires. the taillight required 4 holes drilled and uses the existing zero mounts. only real hard part is being patient enough to drill the holes for your blinkers to line up straight.

sorry,, don't have a pic of the blinkers up front but once again i used the existing mounts. all that was required was drilling the back hole on the mount to 1/4" to match the blinker.

laters,

How do you plan to mount the license plate?

going to just cut and solder in the stock plugs so everything is still plug and play.
Here are the proper connectors, if you want to preserve the original wiring:

When I was racing, we were putting Honda Pistons in New Kawasaki models because performance parts weren't available yet.
I have been modding motorcycles for over 50 years. Just making a point about the people selling the product.
I have and LED tail / brake light on my FX that should never have come near it. Works fine for me.

This was so much easier when I could run out to Radio Shack or Arrow Electronics and grab some down the Molex aisle. (Of course, the UJMs used standard automotive bullet connectors anyway.)

That was said tounge-in-cheek... Ebay isnt really a reliable source for finding what works. lol.

167 negative reviews for that seller. Mostly " didn't fit " and wrong part.
I like to walk in with my original part in hand and see what looks close.
Getting to old to tinker. I want to ride.

sorry guys, work has been busy. i once compared my job to being a fish, in a fish bowl, on a boat, at sea, in the middle of an ocean. it's fluid to say the least and you never know what gonna happen minute by minute, let alone day by day. some times it's calm and you do what ever makes you happy, others times it's a hurricane and you better have your A game. you make plans and prepare but...

i was able to make some progress this afternoon between 2 meetings. i have the rear brake/tail all soldered, and heat shrinked with the OEM plug. i have made some blinker extension wires and soldered and heat shrank those. all that is left on the rear is cutting the bullet fasteners off the new blinkers, and soldering on the extensions i just mentioned, then heat shrink it all. after that, it's ready to go back on the bike.

i also figured out my front blinkers and their wiring connectors. i wanted something small but still detachable. i could not find any mini bullet or spade connectors that i was happy with so i decided to just use molex electrical pins (male/female) which i will heat shrink over the entire female pin. basically making my own "micro bullet" connectors. i think it's gonna be perfect.

assuming the "seas" are calm tomorrow i should at least have the rear end put back together and will snap some pics.

cross fingers. my heel is feeling better and better and i'm starting to get the itch. it's gonna be time to ride soon.

laters,

laramie  ;)
