Title: j1772 Combo?
Post by: BmoreThor on October 17, 2016, 05:29:08 AM
Hey guys, I don't have a zero yet but while I wait for the 2017's, I've been trying to wrap my head around all the different types of chargers and standards.

From my limited knowledge I've been able to determine that Zero dropped its plans for DC charging due to charging stations not supporting a voltage low enough for a Zero?

However, both Zero and a 3rd party (Diginow?) have AC chargers that use the j1772 plug?

Which brings me to my question.... is there an adapter or easy workaround the use a j1772 combo station on either the Zero Charge Tank, or the Diginow Charger?

CCS socket will take J1772.

Does J1772 socket safely connect with a CCS plug via adapter?  If so, would a CCS station provide L2 charging through that connection?

CCS is high voltage DC current. It is no help for a J1772 only vehicle, as that expects 110-240v AC. Same thing in reverse, J1772 plugging into a CCS inlet won't do anything, well it will function like a normal J1772 (since CCS is just J1772, with huge DC plugs on the bottom).

I hope that doesn't make things more confusing.

What was explained above is correct.  To put it simply, you can not use a Combo DC station (Level 3) with your Zero, any chargers or any aftermarket chargers right now or any time soon.

You can use J1772 AC (Level 2) with the Supercharger, Chargetank, Elcon kit from Hollywood Electrics, or with the onboard charger with an adapter from Zero, Hollywood Electrics, or Tuscon EV.

Dang that's unfortunate. A local chain of gas stations has been installing chademo and CSS changing stations all over the state and it would have made road trips that much easier.

It's been posted before, but it bears keeping in mind:
