Title: Just ordered a new Zero!
Post by: Justin Andrews on January 15, 2018, 03:09:16 AM
Just put a deposit down on a new 2018 SR with the charge tank, to replace my 2015 SR.
This is going to be my fourth Zero all told.

Its going to be a good year I think! :)

Congratulations. What other Zeros have you owned?

2012 ZF-9  (Glitchy)
2013 Zero-S (Good, but I did'nt like the suspension)
2015 Zero-SR. (Excellent, will be sorry to see it go)

Congratulations Justin.  It will be interesting to hear what you think of your new bike, compared with your 2015 SR.  And good luck being an early adopter of the new Charge Tank.  :)

I'll be taking a demo version of the 18 SR for a spin very soon. So hopefully I can give some feedback then.

I have to say I was quite seriously tempted by this bike though...

Its in such good condition it's engine block barely even leaks!

Wow, that's fantastic news mate! It did cross my mind that you might be considering the 2018 model.  Coincidentally, I sent an email to Jason at Streetbike a coupe of days ago enquiring about a 2018 SR with a charge tank.  I have yet to sweet talk my good wife though. I at least have two points in my favour:

1.  When the opportunity came to get my 2014DS, I struck a deal with my good lady that I would keep it for at least two years. That elapses in five days time.

The reason I agreed to this was because 2015/6 turned out to be a very expensive year in my biking career.  I went from my old Fazer 1000 > Honda NC 750 DCT (new) > VFR 1200FD (used) > Zero 2014DS(P). The eagle eyed amongst you may have spotted that I haven't got round to updating my profile picture yet...

2.  I've  just started up a limited company so I might be able to purchase a new bike through that, drop the VAT and also drop my tax liability.  I should probably earn enough money to pay for it first though.  I also need to learn all the rules about running vehicles through a company. I'm a complete newbie...

I'm also thinking of ordering via Streetbike, if it happens.  Did Jason give you a delivery date? It must also mean that the new charge tank is available with a Mennekes socket, so that's great news!

Many congrats Justin. :-)

Oooh, I've just thought, can I have first dibs on your old Elcon and cables if I can't afford a new bike?

Yeah I've already sent you a FB message to that regard. :)

I have a rough date, late March. So I'm hoping to get on the road with it in early April.
I don't know if the tank comes with Mennekes socket actually, I'll have to check.

I think I read elsewhere that they might come with a Type 1 to Mennekes cable instead, if that is the case then I might roll a Mennekes socket to type 1 adapator for the few charge stations that have fixed cables (which is mostly the Ecotricity motorway ones)

Cool! I'll have to check FB then. :)

I've got gadget fever again now. Can't sleep and obsessively following this forum. Oh dear...

Congratulations and good luck to us. I made a deposit back in early December and paid for my '18 SR also with charge tank two weeks ago, but they've been taking their time releasing it. Hopefully they're just being very thorough and not correcting problems.

I just had a bicycling accident a week ago that resulted in broken rib, minor concussion, and a badly fractured femur, but my GF is going to ride the bike home. Going to be maybe another month of waiting, but at least I'll be able to crutch out to the garage to look at the new beauty. I also got mine with a spare set of the red bodywork, Givi topcase, and a commuter windscreen to protect my dog.

Will check in when they finally deliver the bike. Best of luck to us and RIDE SAFE! (Spending a few weeks on your back, dependent upon painkillers, losing fitness, missing work, and being in constant pain for several days ain't much fun.)

Airbag jacket! I have one, they are really worth the cost.

While bicycling? How much do they weigh?

Go-go-gadget fat-guy suit!!

Ah no... this is for my motorcycle, I doubt a push bike has enough weight to pull the ripcord.

Finally have a firmish commitment date from my dealer. Looks like my bike will be ready for pick up this Tuesday, 1/23.
Girlfriend is going to ride it home, but I'm pretty pumped just to have it in my garage, and I've got an appointment with the doc and Xray to see if I can put weight on the busted femur soon.

To say that I'm pumped is gross misunderstatement.

Great news. It's good to hear that deliveries are starting to happen.  Ride safe.

Just traded in a 2015 FZ 09 for a 2016 Zero SR. My first Zero so I am really excited.

1/23/18 is the date I finally got my SR! My gf rode it home from San Diego Triumph. Then we went for a quick cruise down to Carlsbad Village on PCH. Not the smartest move with a broken femur and rib, but I took it easy and my crutches waiting for me in the garage.
The belt is a little noisy when new, but I'm sure it will wear in. Other than that, it's just the neatest damned thing! It just flows forward without any effort at all.
It's going to be a few more weeks before I'll be walking and riding it to work, but I'm so excited about this bike! Fun to have something to look forward to again after these hopeless week on pain pills, crutches, and waiting in line in my idiotic car behind the rest of the chumps in their idiotic cars.

Great news! And it looks like we will have at least a week or more of dry weather in California, once today's storm in northern California moves on after Thursday. So good winter riding weather is here.  :) What do you think about the belt tension as set by the factory?  ??? And watch out for a squealing front brake when coming to a complete stop at around 300 miles.  Mine is still doing it even after a thorough cleaning. :(

Thanks Richard, but I'm still on crutches for another 2-3 weeks. Be sure to get in as much riding as you can because in 2-3 weeks, we're going to have the drought-ending mother of all storms as soon as my broken bones have healed enough to let me ride it.

Regarding the belt tension, I'll check it. Fortunately I already have one of those Gates Crikits for my belt-drive bicycle. This new SR does seem noisy to me, but that could be because I've been riding vicariously the last two months on Youtube.

Hey Justin! You got your bike yet?
Where are you located?

I ordered a 2018 SR months ago, told by my dealer it will be here in January. Since then, no communication from Zero to my local dealer. No bike in sight. Certainly won't be here when it was promised.

Meeting or better yet exceeding expectations is a core principle of a successful business.
Yo Zero, are you listening?

I was also pretty disappointed in my dealership's response, so I contacted Zero directly several times on their website. Either my emails were bouncing off their firewall, or they were too busy to respond, or they're too busy working on the next miaracle-battery to worry about customer service, but I didn't get a response until the bike was shipping.
Not everyone understands that good customer service means communicating, even if it's bad news. I dread giving my customers bad news when our production team doesn't meet our estimated ship dates, but most (admittedly not all) of my customers appreciate when I call them with real information, even if it's bad news.

Where are you located? If it's any solace, I'm in Southern California and already paid full cash for my bike and it still took over a month. The most information I got is that they were triple-checking the firmware on the charge tank and wanted to be sure before they shipped the bike.

Good luck and keep us abreast. I am so happy with the bike and feel it was worth the wait. I hope you get yours soon and feel the same way.

Dang! Where are you located? Are they holding off because you're in American Siberia or something?

UK, plus I'm waiting on the new charge tank.

Nuts. Sorry, mate.
Have to appreciate the irony:
I'm located in California and got my bike, but am now crippled, on crutches and unable to ride it.
Whereas you are healthy and able to ride, but have no bike.

Be safe. My bike finally showed up about 10 days after I crashed my bicycle, breaking a rib & femur. haha

Get well soon. Least you don't have the cold and damp like here in the Uk to slow your recovery.

No, I have San Diego weather, with all my cycling and motorcycling friends stopping by on their rides to see how I'm doing/rub it in.
The beach was really beautiful last night I hear. 80+ degrees here today and I'm stuck inside staring at a stupid computer monitor. Yay-perfect weather AND a perfect bike I don't get to enjoy it in. Haha.

Just learned for Zero that they've had supply chain issues with the new charge tank. This has been corrected and they are catching up now.

I'm interested to see the new charge tank, I wonder if they are just doubling up the Enphase Chargers like I did (although mine are TSM 2500, they put out 3kw each)
