Title: Are the 2018' S and SR good machines ?
Post by: Franswak on September 14, 2018, 03:32:02 PM
Hi folks,

I have a 2016 S and I would like to purchase a new one, demo unit of 2018 SR.
I was wondering for those who are ridding the 2018 iterations of the S and SR if you consider the machines as a good version, reliable , .. ?
What comment would you have ?

Especially if you had previous versions before...
Thanks

Franswak

I am happy with my 2018 S. But I don't see it as being a noticeable improvement in performance or range, compared with my 2014 S. It does have much better suspension and ABS, however. It also weighs about 10 pounds more. While I had no problems with my 2014 model, the latest version is no doubt more reliable and I do appreciate its ability to have its firmware updated via the internet at my home and I do not have to visit my dealer to have updates installed.

Not the S/SR, but I went from a 2016 FXS to 2018 FXS.  There is nothing remarkably different about them, but some small improvements.

A few people have problems, but most people find them reliable.  I don't think there is enough data to point to 2018 being more or less reliable than 2016.  Certainly not significantly different.

Isn’t there a big torque difference? “Not much change in performance” surprises me to hear.

I wouldn't call it a BIG torque difference. The webpage shows the current SR has 116 ft-lbs of torque; my 2014 was rated at 106. So less than a 10% difference.

Regarding the OP's question about reliability, 2 cents worth here:

2018 S 7.2. 1500 miles so far, so not much.
Fault light came on once about the sidestand sensor. I jiggled the wire at the sensor and haven't had that issue since. O/w flawless.

As for torque: Has plenty of torque for me. I think the 90lbs lighter weight without the second battery stack at least partially compensates for the lower torque of the S vs. SR.

The torque frankly is insane and I hope Zero offers traction control in the future. Plenty of posts here about unexpected hard falls related to this issue. I don't want to start another "I don't need no stinkin' traction control and neither should you" war. Just reporting this rider's experience.

I have to agree about the traction control given just how easy it is to spin the rear even when fully upright let alone in rain, slick city streets, leaning mid corner... It's not much of an issue for seasoned folks but i fear for the new or inexperienced riders.

I am very happy on my Zero S (4000 km) I have from last April 2018. At present time I haven't any troubles with my marvellous machine. :)

Thanks for you replies,

As for my 2016 S, well, it works fine but I had some issues :
- The screen for some time in the winter did not work and was blank when ON, and then after a big rain, it started to work again, randomly and for few months not it works everytime.
- I have a strange thing about the rear brake. When I stop with the unit and keep my foot on the brake (and maybe with a ground which is not perfectly flat), then when I release the pedal I can feel that the brake is maybe a bit stuck and if I give a kick down on the pedal, I can hear a bit CLACK noise and the feeling disappears.. Any idea ?

Other than that I found it to be reliable. But you know, sometimes, with new products, you have issues..

Thanks
