Title: FXS with a level 2 charger?
Post by: bergercurtis on July 23, 2019, 10:58:55 AM
Does anyone here own one? Seen one? Have pictures? This is about the only competitor in my market to paying up and buying an SR/F.

An FXS is on my list to buy, so here's hoping to a major upgrade in 2020.

I have an FXS, and have been contemplating adding this charging feature to it. From what I've seen the best way to get level 2 charging would be with a pair of diginow chargers, but they don't have a clean mounting pan, like they do for other models. Their site says to contact them: https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:QIaex_Ypm70J:https://diginow.it/installations.php+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us (https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:QIaex_Ypm70J:https://diginow.it/installations.php+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us) Apparently their site has been redesigned recently and doesn't have all the old info.

One big problem is where to mount the chargers. I was thinking, since I have a top case on the back, I might be able to mount a pair of them like saddlebags. It might look cool.

There is one FXS for sale in Denver currently, and it has a small top box that seems to work with the overall look and doesn't seem too out of place. That could be a good, non-invasive system.

We're no longer making chargers for Zero bikes. That being said here's our FXS with 10kW of onboard charging with the 1C restriction bypassed:

Why are you guys no longer making chargers for them? With a little tuck and tidy, it could feasibly be hidden in a top box on top of the rear fender pretty seamlessly.

Rather than retype the reasons I'll just put this here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/diginow-supercharger-v2-5-mass-production/x/19740763?create_edit=true#/updates/all

It's not a matter of where to mount them that made us decide to stop.

Sorry to hear that, and all the best in the future. Without excess capital, startups can be very difficult I'm sure. Hope you guys don't give up hope and try a different avenue.

Thanks! Motorcycles are our first love, but it makes more sense to pursue the greater EV market beyond bikes. This is a really cool time to be in this industry.

Through the years, I've worked in anything from automotive technician work, automotive service writing, logistics and coordination, and most recently motorcycle sales. I definitely took a big pay hit going into motorcycle sales, but I've had the most fun and been most passionate about it. Now to shift into the EV market, it's a whole new prospect of possibilities. I'm with you 110%!

My Zero dealer told me last weekend that they sent two of their salespeople to the Zero factory for extensive training on the features of the SR/F.  Shortly after they returned from that training they left the shop for another job.  I wasn't told where they went.  My guess is that they moved to an auto dealer, likely one that sells EVs.   ???

Whats the pack temp like after charging >1C? Also I know the farrasis spec sheet states 1C max charging, but of course all rules are meant to be broken :). Any concern of plating / battery degradation?

Can get dangerously hot. There are a couple safeguard in place. First, the BMS doesn't allow charging past a certain point. We have modified these numbers but the system is in place. Second, this system used our digiNow v2.5 board with full CAN communication that monitors pack temperature and charges based off that data and the information we got from Farasis. Add all that into the fact that my brother (bike owner) rides like a maniac and he's had to stop and let them cool more than once. Then again he's got close to 30,000 miles on it. All that being said a 20 minute charge off level 2 is extremely enjoyable.

Who is your closest Zero dealer there?

Common problem with Zeros, Especially here in Reno where I don't think we now have anybody who works on Zeros. I am many versions behind on my firmware and cannot even get it updated. Not even the first update (after that, I should be able to do it myself).   And then the motor commissioning--was never done after I purchased the bikes  and I now have more than  7,500 miles on each of my Zeros.  Fortunately, they still both run fine.  I rode my SR here from Auburn today.

Perhaps I should try Elk Grove Power Sports. I wonder if they can do a FW update as I wait.

Based on that information alone, I'd be worried that they left because they saw something at Zero that they didn't like??  Problems afoot?  Were there any other context clues that led you to believe they went to a car dealership?

Have you talked to Zero management?  Are they aware of the isolation issues?  I'm wondering if they are actively working on the problem for future bikes.

I doubt actual mechanics would quit their jobs at a certain dealership because they saw bad management in one of the manufacturers they support.
Not sure about that specific dealer but most everywhere you have a dealer representing multiple brands.

The one near me sells and services Ducati, BMW, Triumph and Zero.

These two rascals probably found a job with more pay elsewhere or maybe the benefits at the Zero dealer were not too good.

The only reason that I believe that these salespeople (not technicians) might have taken off to a car dealership is that it is very expensive to live in the Bay Area and motorcycle shops don't pay their employees nearly as much as do car businesses and I have no doubt that the bonus for selling an automobile is much greater than when you sell a motorcycle.  If someone had a good knowledge of EV technology and could explain it in layman's terms to a customer looking at an EV or hybrid automobile, then that person might have a skill that would make them valuable to any car dealership.

I have absolutely no reason to believe that these salespeople might have learned something at the Zero seminar that would encourage them to distance themselves from the product. I believe that they just took advantage of their new knowledge to get ahead in their careers.

I don't even own a FXS yet but I was wondering ...
Might it be possible to replace the FX onboard charger with the 3kw SR/F charger?

The SR/F 3kw onboard chargers look pretty small there above the battery pack.

Is it possible to order the sr/f charger as a spare part?

No.  The SR/F charger is designed for a much larger battery.

However, it would be possible to add a third-party charger(s).

I dont think the charger cares about the size of the battery.

The important is that the voltage level of the battery is the same. And I think that's the same for all Zeros.

For example the fxs onboard charger charges a fxs with with one battery module of 3.6kwh and one with both modules of 7.2kwh.

In theory it could work although I doubt the CAN communication will be plug and play. I can't see the chargers listed on AF1, to be honest you'd probably be better off getting something pre-programmed from somewhere like Elcon. I think they have 1.8, 3, and 6kW models.

The charger doesn't 'care' per se, but the battery does!  Batteries can only be charged at such a rate, anything over that and they may take damage.  Which is why chargers need to be programmed for the battery pack and shouldn't be too large for the battery pack.

According to the zero webpage the fxs internal charger has 800W and you are allowed to add up to 4 external chargers with 1200w each.

Meaning you can have 4 x 1200w +800w = 5600w of charging power.

The SR/F charger has 3000w. So for my understanding it's not too large for the battery pack of the fxs

The SR/F Premium is 6KW.

Does anybody here  know if the Premium uses a single 6KW charger or does it have two 3 KW chargers?

It's two 3kW chargers. That's one way you can tell the models apart, the base model has a single charger with space behind it for another (above the battery) and the premium has two of them.

Thanks. I assume that means a 3KW charger can be easily added to the base model. And I assume it's the same on the SR/S.

If that's the case, this bike  (https://www.eurocyclereno.com/inventory/2020-zero-srs-reno-nv-89502-10493998i)is now more temping to me.

I am sure you know my fomula for how many bikes we should own. It's "N + 1" where "N" is the number we currently own. ;D

Yes, but the SR/F charger is programmed for a 14.4 battery.  Yes, it is probably just four of the 800W circuits together.

I'm not saying you couldn't put more charger on the F-platform, just that the Zero ones aren't programmed for it so you'd have to go third-party.

It wouldn't fit form-factor, either.

And the SR/S always has the 14.4 battery.  The SR/S is much like an SR/F, but the SR/S has a fairing and is a lot more comfy (to me) than the SR/F. The SR/F makes me lean down so I have to tilt up my head. The SR/S doesn't have this issue and is more comfy for other reasons as well.

The SR/S has the same battery and charger options as the SR/F.

I don't think battery size really matters (as long as the size and charger combo doesn't result in greater than 1C charging), after all the older models have had the same charger on capacities ranging from like 6.8 to 18kW/h (and the FX/S has the same whether it's a 3.6 or 7.2, and for the latter whether it's two separate packs or one). I don't think the charger even knows or cares what the capacity is, it's just charging to a specific voltage and all the capacity changes is how long it takes to get there and how quickly it switches from constant current to constant voltage (or the other way round, always forget which it is).

Yep, if all else is the  same, it simply takes twice as long to charge a battery twice the size with the same charger, which is the same added range per minute of charge in either. No need to reprogram anything.

But didn't  the older FX/s use  a lower  battery voltage?  I remember the Delta Q chargers were different for the older bikes.
