Title: Zero SR/F Rapid Charge option
Post by: jan on November 19, 2019, 01:26:53 AM
I’m considering purchasing the rapid charge upgrade, and was wondering if any fellow SR/F (Premium) owners have any (real-life) experience with it and whether it’s a recommendable upgrade. For example, does it actually live up to its promise of ~ 12 kW in practice, and does it change the handling of the bike due to increased weight?

That would be a yes, another yes and a no :)

Maybe it depends on where you live but with a type 2 version (europe) it does 11.5 kW maximum on a 22kW or higher charging station. On a 11 kW charging station it still does 9.2 kW (both indicated on the dash which apparently is DC power into the battery.

Handling is not affected at all. The rapid charge module only weighs between 5 and 10 kilograms.
It does take away most of your storage. a small (about 35 mm high) portion remains.

I think it's worth mentioning that for the EU / Type 2 market, the chargers are arrayed across the 3 phases of incoming AC power, whereas in the J1772 / US market, it's on single phase, and to get the most out of the chargers, one should get a Tesla adapter, like TeslaTap or similar.

Some J1772 stations go higher than the 6.6kW / 30A default, but it's not often in my experience.

Tesla destination chargers often (mostly?) provide more than 12kW of AC power, and are pretty common.

Most are 48 amps. 240 VAC times 48 amps=11,520 watts.
